एवमुक्तस्तु रामेण लक्ष्मणः श्लक्ष्णया गिरा। प्रत्युवाच तदा रामं वाक्यज्ञो वाक्यकोविदम्
Thus addressed by Rāma in gentle words, Lakṣmaṇa, skilled in speech and knowing how to reply, spoke to Rāma.
तवैव तेजसा वीर भरतः पूजयिष्यति। कौसल्यां च सुमित्रां च प्रयतो नास्ति संशयः
By your own radiance, O hero, Bharata will surely honor both Kausalyā and Sumitrā with devotion—of this there is no doubt.
यदि दुःस्थो न रक्षेत भरतो राज्यमुत्तमम्। प्राप्य दुर्मनसा वीर गर्वेण च विशेषतः
If, having obtained the excellent kingdom, Bharata does not rule justly, O hero, and acts with a troubled mind, especially out of pride,
तमहं दुर्मतिं क्रूरं वधिष्यामि न संशयः। तत्पक्षानपि तान् सर्वांस्त्रैलोक्यमपि किं तु सा
I will certainly slay that wicked, cruel-minded one—there is no doubt; and all those on his side as well, even if they be the three worlds.
कौसल्या बिभृयादार्या सहस्रं मद्विधानपि। यस्याः सहस्रं ग्रामाणां सम्प्राप्तमुपजीविनाम्
That noble Kausalyā could support a thousand like me, for she has received a thousand villages with dependents.
तदात्मभरणे चैव मम मातुस्तथैव च। पर्याप्ता मद्विधानां च भरणाय मनस्विनी
She is fully capable of providing for herself, for my mother, and for those like me—she is a woman of great resolve.
कुरुष्व मामनुचरं वैधर्म्यं नेह विद्यते। कृतार्थोऽहं भविष्यामि तव चार्थः प्रकल्प्यते
Make me your companion; there is no unrighteousness in this. I will be fulfilled, and your purpose will also be accomplished.
धनुरादाय सगुणं खनित्रपिटकाधरः। अग्रतस्ते गमिष्यामि पन्थानं तव दर्शयन्
With my bow strung and slung, and a spade and basket at my side, I will walk ahead of you, showing you the path.
आहरिष्यामि ते नित्यं मूलानि च फलानि च। वन्यानि च तथान्यानि स्वाहार्हाणि तपस्विनाम्
I will always gather roots and fruits for you, and other forest foods suitable for ascetics.
भवांस्तु सह वैदेह्या गिरिसानुषु रंस्यसे। अहं सर्वं करिष्यामि जाग्रतः स्वपतश्च ते
You, together with Vaidehī, shall delight on the mountain slopes, while I will do everything for you, whether you are awake or asleep.
रामस्त्वनेन वाक्येन सुप्रीतः प्रत्युवाच तम्। व्रजापृच्छस्व सौमित्रे सर्वमेव सुहृज्जनम्
Rāma, greatly pleased by these words, replied to him: 'Go, O Saumitri, and take leave of all your friends.'
ये च राज्ञो ददौ दिव्ये महात्मा वरुणः स्वयम्। जनकस्य महायज्ञे धनुषी रौद्रदर्शने
And those two divine bows, which the great-souled Varuṇa himself gave to the king at Janaka’s great sacrifice, fierce in appearance—
अभेद्ये कवचे दिव्ये तूणी चाक्षय्यसायकौ। आदित्यविमलाभौ द्वौ खड्गौ हेमपरिष्कृतौ
The impenetrable, divine armor, and two inexhaustible quivers, and two swords shining like the sun, adorned with gold—
स सुहृज्जनमामन्त्र्य वनवासाय निश्चितः। इक्ष्वाकुगुरुमागम्य जग्राहायुधमुत्तमम्
Having taken leave of his friends, resolved on dwelling in the forest, he approached the family preceptor of the Ikṣvākus and took up the excellent weapons.
तद् दिव्यं राजशार्दूलः सत्कृतं माल्यभूषितम्। रामाय दर्शयामास सौमित्रिः सर्वमायुधम्
Saumitri displayed to Rāma all those divine weapons, honored and adorned with garlands, O tiger among kings.
तमुवाचात्मवान् रामः प्रीत्या लक्ष्मणमागतम्। काले त्वमागतः सौम्य कांक्षिते मम लक्ष्मण
Rāma, self-controlled, spoke with affection to Lakṣmaṇa, who had arrived: 'You have come at the right time, dear one, just as I wished, O Lakṣmaṇa.'
अहं प्रदातुमिच्छामि यदिदं मामकं धनम्। ब्राह्मणेभ्यस्तपस्विभ्यस्त्वया सह परंतप
I wish to give all this wealth of mine, O subduer of foes, to the Brāhmaṇas and ascetics, together with you.
वसन्तीह दृढं भक्त्या गुरुषु द्विजसत्तमाः। तेषामपि च मे भूयः सर्वेषां चोपजीविनाम्
Here dwell the foremost Brāhmaṇas, steadfast in devotion to their teachers; and also all my dependents.
वसिष्ठपुत्रं तु सुयज्ञमार्यं त्वमानयाशु प्रवरं द्विजानाम्। अपि प्रयास्यामि वनं समस्ता- नभ्यर्च्य शिष्टानपरान् द्विजातीन्
But you, bring here Suyajña, the noble son of Vasiṣṭha, the foremost among the twice-born. I will soon depart for the forest, after honoring all the distinguished and other Brāhmaṇas.

Let the thirty-second chapter be heard in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa.
ततः शासनमाज्ञाय भ्रातुः प्रियकरं हितम्। गत्वा स प्रविवेशाशु सुयज्ञस्य निवेशनम्
Then, having understood the command—dear and beneficial—of his brother, he quickly went and entered the residence of Suyajña.
तं विप्रमग्न्यगारस्थं वन्दित्वा लक्ष्मणोऽब्रवीत्। सखेऽभ्यागच्छ पश्य त्वं वेश्म दुष्करकारिणः
Lakṣmaṇa, after bowing to that Brāhmaṇa who was in the fire-chamber, said: 'Friend, come with me and see the house of one who performs difficult deeds.'
ततः संध्यामुपास्थाय गत्वा सौमित्रिणा सह। ऋद्धं स प्राविशल्लक्ष्म्या रम्यं रामनिवेशनम्
Then, having performed the twilight worship, he went together with Saumitri and entered the splendid and prosperous house of Rāma.
जातरूपमयैर्मुख्यैरङ्गदैः कुण्डलैः शुभैः। सहेमसूत्रैर्मणिभिः केयूरैर्वलयैरपि
With excellent armlets of gold, beautiful earrings, necklaces with golden threads, gems, bracelets, and bangles,
अन्यैश्च रत्नैर्बहुभिः काकुत्स्थः प्रत्यपूजयत्। सुयज्ञं स तदोवाच रामः सीताप्रचोदितः
And with many other jewels, the descendant of Kakutstha honored Suyajña; then, at Sītā’s urging, Rāma spoke to him.
हारं च हेमसूत्रं च भार्यायै सौम्य हारय। रशनां चाथ सा सीता दातुमिच्छति ते सखी
Gentle one, have a necklace and a golden chain taken to your wife; and Sītā, my companion, wishes to give her a girdle as well.
अङ्गदानि च चित्राणि केयूराणि शुभानि च। प्रयच्छति सखी तुभ्यं भार्यायै गच्छती वनम्
Also, my companion gives you, for your wife who is going to the forest, splendid anklets and beautiful armlets.
पर्यङ्कमग्र्यास्तरणं नानारत्नविभूषितम्। तमपीच्छति वैदेही प्रतिष्ठापयितुं त्वयि
And Vaidehī wishes to have you set up a couch, excellently spread and adorned with various jewels.
नागः शत्रुंजयो नाम मातुलोऽयं ददौ मम। तं ते निष्कसहस्रेण ददामि द्विजपुङ्गव
This elephant named Śatruṃjaya, which my maternal uncle gave me, I now give to you, best of Brāhmaṇas, along with a thousand gold coins.
इत्युक्तः स तु रामेण सुयज्ञः प्रतिगृह्य तत्। रामलक्ष्मणसीतानां प्रयुयोजाशिषः शिवाः
Thus addressed by Rāma, Suyajña accepted those gifts and bestowed auspicious blessings upon Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, and Sītā.
