सौमित्रे योऽभिषेकार्थे मम सम्भारसम्भ्रमः। अभिषेकनिवृत्त्यर्थे सोऽस्तु सम्भारसम्भ्रमः
O Saumitri, the effort made for my consecration should now be directed toward its cancellation.
यस्या मदभिषेकार्थे मानसं परितप्यते। माता नः सा यथा न स्यात् सविशङ्का तथा कुरु
Let us act so that our mother, whose mind is troubled on account of my consecration, may not remain anxious.
तस्याः शङ्कामयं दुःखं मुहूर्तमपि नोत्सहे। मनसि प्रतिसंजातं सौमित्रेऽहमुपेक्षितुम्
I cannot endure, even for a moment, this pain of suspicion arising in her mind, O Saumitri.
न बुद्धिपूर्वं नाबुद्धं स्मरामीह कदाचन। मातॄणां वा पितुर्वाहं कृतमल्पं च विप्रियम्
I do not recall ever, knowingly or unknowingly, doing anything slight or displeasing to my mothers or father.
सत्यः सत्याभिसंधश्च नित्यं सत्यपराक्रमः। परलोकभयाद् भीतो निर्भयोऽस्तु पिता मम
My father, who is truthful, steadfast in his vows, always devoted to truth, should be fearless, fearing only the consequences in the next world.
तस्यापि हि भवेदस्मिन् कर्मण्यप्रतिसंहृते। सत्यं नेति मनस्तापस्तस्य तापस्तपेच्च माम्
If this act is not carried out, even for her, my mind would be troubled by the thought that truth is not upheld, and her anguish would afflict me.
अभिषेकविधानं तु तस्मात् संहृत्य लक्ष्मण। अन्वगेवाहमिच्छामि वनं गन्तुमितः पुरः
Therefore, Lakshmana, withdrawing the arrangements for the consecration, I wish to go to the forest from here, right away.
मम प्रव्राजनादद्य कृतकृत्या नृपात्मजा। सुतं भरतमव्यग्रमभिषेचयतां ततः
Today, with my departure into exile, the king's wife will have accomplished her purpose; then let them consecrate her son Bharata, free from anxiety.
मयि चीराजिनधरे जटामण्डलधारिणि। गतेऽरण्यं च कैकेय्या भविष्यति मनः सुखम्
When I have gone to the forest, wearing bark garments and a matted hair crown, Kaikeyi will find peace of mind.
बुद्धिः प्रणीता येनेयं मनश्च सुसमाहितम्। तं नु नार्हामि संक्लेष्टुं प्रव्रजिष्यामि मा चिरम्
The decision by which this has come about, and the mind that is so resolved, I ought not to disturb; I will depart into exile without delay.
कृतान्त एव सौमित्रे द्रष्टव्यो मत्प्रवासने। राज्यस्य च वितीर्णस्य पुनरेव निवर्तने
O gentle one, it is fate alone that must be seen in my banishment and in the reversal of the kingdom that had already been bestowed.
कैकेय्याः प्रतिपत्तिर्हि कथं स्यान्मम वेदने। यदि तस्या न भावोऽयं कृतान्तविहितो भवेत्
How could Kaikeyi's resolve have arisen to harm me, unless this intention of hers had been ordained by fate?
जानासि हि यथा सौम्य न मातृषु ममान्तरम्। भूतपूर्वं विशेषो वा तस्या मयि सुतेऽपि वा
For you know, gentle one, that I have never made any distinction among my mothers, nor has there ever been any special preference for her or for her son from me.
सोऽभिषेकनिवृत्त्यर्थैः प्रवासार्थैश्च दुर्वचैः। उग्रैर्वाक्यैरहं तस्या नान्यद् दैवात् समर्थये
Therefore, with her harsh words meant to prevent my consecration and send me into exile, I see no other cause but fate behind her actions.
कथं प्रकृतिसम्पन्ना राजपुत्री तथागुणा। ब्रूयात् सा प्राकृतेव स्त्री मत्पीड्यं भर्तृसंनिधौ
How could a princess, endowed with noble qualities, speak like an ordinary woman, causing me pain in the presence of her husband?
यदचिन्त्यं तु तद् दैवं भूतेष्वपि न हन्यते। व्यक्तं मयि च तस्यां च पतितो हि विपर्ययः
But destiny, which is beyond thought, does not spare even living beings; clearly, misfortune has fallen upon both her and me.
कश्च दैवेन सौमित्रे योद्धुमुत्सहते पुमान्। यस्य नु ग्रहणं किंचित् कर्मणोऽन्यन्न दृश्यते
Who, O gentle Lakshmana, is able to contend with fate, when nothing but what is destined is seen to result from any action?
ऋषयोऽप्युग्रतपसो दैवेनाभिप्रचोदिताः। उत्सृज्य नियमांस्तीव्रान् भ्रश्यन्ते काममन्युभिः
Even seers of fierce austerity, impelled by fate, abandon their intense vows and fall under the sway of desire and anger.
असंकल्पितमेवेह यदकस्मात् प्रवर्तते। निवर्त्यारब्धमारम्भैर्ननु दैवस्य कर्म तत्
Whatever unexpectedly arises here, without being conceived beforehand, and interrupts what has been begun—surely, that is the work of fate.
एतया तत्त्वया बुद्ध्या संस्तभ्यात्मानमात्मना। व्याहतेऽप्यभिषेके मे परितापो न विद्यते
With this understanding, restraining myself by my own mind, I feel no distress even though my consecration has been hindered.
तस्मादपरितापः संस्त्वमप्यनुविधाय माम्। प्रतिसंहारय क्षिप्रमाभिषेचनिकीं क्रियाम्
Therefore, do not grieve; you too, following me, quickly withdraw the preparations for the consecration.
एभिरेव घटैः सर्वैरभिषेचनसम्भृतैः। मम लक्ष्मण तापस्ये व्रतस्नानं भविष्यति
With these very jars, Lakshmana, all prepared for the consecration, I will perform the vow-bath of an ascetic.
अथवा किं मयैतेन राज्यद्रव्यमयेन तु। उद्धृतं मे स्वयं तोयं व्रतादेशं करिष्यति
Or else, what need have I for this royal paraphernalia? The water I myself draw will suffice for the bath required by my vow.
मा च लक्ष्मण संतापं कार्षीर्लक्ष्म्या विपर्यये। राज्यं वा वनवासो वा वनवासो महोदयः
Do not, Lakshmana, be troubled by the reversal of fortune; whether it is the kingdom or the forest, the forest life is of great merit.
न लक्ष्मणास्मिन् मम राज्यविघ्ने माता यवीयस्यभिशङ्कितव्या। दैवाभिपन्ना न पिता कथंचि- ज्जानासि दैवं हि तथाप्रभावम्
Lakshmana is not to be suspected in this obstruction to my kingship, nor is my younger mother; fate has intervened, not my father in any way—indeed, you know well how powerful destiny is.

इति ब्रुवति रामे तु लक्ष्मणोऽवाक् शिरा इव। ध्यात्वा मध्यं जगामाशु सहसा दैन्यहर्षयोः
As Rama spoke thus, Lakshmana, with his head bowed, quickly entered the midst, his mind seized by both sorrow and anger.
तदा तु बद्ध्वा भ्रुकुटीं भ्रुवोर्मध्ये नरर्षभः। निशश्वास महासर्पो बिलस्थ इव रोषितः
Then, the best of men furrowed his brow, and breathed heavily like a great serpent enraged in its hole.
तस्य दुष्प्रतिवीक्ष्यं तद् भ्रुकुटीसहितं तदा। बभौ क्रुद्धस्य सिंहस्य मुखस्य सदृशं मुखम्
At that moment, his face, with its fierce frown, was as hard to look upon as the face of an angry lion.
अग्रहस्तं विधुन्वंस्तु हस्ती हस्तमिवात्मनः। तिर्यगूर्ध्वं शरीरे च पातयित्वा शिरोधराम्
He shook his clenched fist, like an elephant shaking its trunk, and, tilting his head to the side and upward, let his neck fall.
