अतोषयन् महाराजमकुर्वन् वा पितुर्वचः। मुहूर्तमपि नेच्छेयं जीवितुं कुपिते नृपे
If I were to displease the great king, or fail to carry out my father's command, I would not wish to live even for a moment while the king is angered.
यतोमूलं नरः पश्येत् प्रादुर्भावमिहात्मनः। कथं तस्मिन् न वर्तेत प्रत्यक्षे सति दैवते
Since a person sees the very source of his own existence here, how could he not act according to the wishes of that visible divinity?
कच्चित्ते परुषं किंचिदभिमानात् पिता मम। उक्तो भवत्या रोषेण येनास्य लुलितं मनः
Has my father, out of pride or anger, ever spoken any harsh word to you, by which his mind has been disturbed?
एवमुक्ता तु कैकेयी राघवेण महात्मना। उवाचेदं सुनिर्लज्जा धृष्टमात्महितं वचः
Thus addressed by the high-souled Rāghava, Kaikeyī, without any shame and with boldness, spoke these words for her own benefit.
न राजा कुपितो राम व्यसनं नास्य किंचन। किंचिन्मनोगतं त्वस्य त्वद्भयान्नानुभाषते
Rāma, the king is not angry, nor has any misfortune befallen him; but because of fear of you, he does not express what is on his mind.
प्रियं त्वामप्रियं वक्तुं वाणी नास्य प्रवर्तते। तदवश्यं त्वया कार्यं यदनेनाश्रुतं मम
He cannot bring himself to speak to you either pleasant or unpleasant words; therefore, you must certainly do what he has not told me.
एष मह्यं वरं दत्त्वा पुरा मामभिपूज्य च। स पश्चात् तप्यते राजा यथान्यः प्राकृतस्तथा
Long ago, after honoring me, he granted me a boon; now the king regrets it, just as an ordinary man might.
अतिसृज्य ददानीति वरं मम विशाम्पतिः। स निरर्थं गतजले सेतुं बन्धितुमिच्छति
Having declared, 'I will grant you a boon,' the lord of the people now wishes to go back on his word, like one who tries to build a bridge over water that has already flowed away.
धर्ममूलमिदं राम विदितं च सतामपि। तत् सत्यं न त्यजेद् राजा कुपितस्त्वत्कृते यथा
This is rooted in righteousness, Rāma, and is known even to the virtuous; therefore, the king, even if angry for your sake, should not abandon truth.
यदि तद् वक्ष्यते राजा शुभं वा यदि वाशुभम्। करिष्यसि ततः सर्वमाख्यास्यामि पुनस्त्वहम्
If the king tells you what is good or what is not, will you carry out everything? If so, I will tell you everything again.
यदि त्वभिहितं राज्ञा त्वयि तन्न विपत्स्यते। ततोऽहमभिधास्यामि न ह्येष त्वयि वक्ष्यति
If what the king has said to you will not be undone, then I will speak; for he will not say it to you himself.
एतत् तु वचनं श्रुत्वा कैकेय्या समुदाहृतम्। उवाच व्यथितो रामस्तां देवीं नृपसंनिधौ
Hearing these words spoken by Kaikeyī, Rāma, distressed, addressed that queen in the presence of the king.
अहो धिङ् नार्हसे देवि वक्तुं मामीदृशं वचः। अहं हि वचनाद् राज्ञः पतेयमपि पावके
Ah, shame! Lady, you should not speak to me in this way; for I would even throw myself into fire at the king's command.
भक्षयेयं विषं तीक्ष्णं पतेयमपि चार्णवे। नियुक्तो गुरुणा पित्रा नृपेण च हितेन च
I would drink deadly poison or leap into the ocean if ordered by my teacher, my father, the king, or one who wishes me well.
तद् ब्रूहि वचनं देवि राज्ञो यदभिकांक्षितम्। करिष्ये प्रतिजाने च रामो द्विर्नाभिभाषते
Therefore, tell me, Lady, whatever the king desires; I will do it, I promise you—Rāma does not speak twice.
तमार्जवसमायुक्तमनार्या सत्यवादिनम्। उवाच रामं कैकेयी वचनं भृशदारुणम्
To Rāma, who was endowed with straightforwardness and truthfulness, Kaikeyī, though unworthy, spoke exceedingly harsh words.
पुरा देवासुरे युद्धे पित्रा ते मम राघव। रक्षितेन वरौ दत्तौ सशल्येन महारणे
Long ago, during the war between the gods and demons, O Rāghava, your father, having been protected, was granted two boons in the great battle, even while wounded.
तत्र मे याचितो राजा भरतस्याभिषेचनम्। गमनं दण्डकारण्ये तव चाद्यैव राघव
There, I asked the king for the consecration of Bharata and for your departure today itself, O Rāghava, to the Daṇḍaka forest.
यदि सत्यप्रतिज्ञं त्वं पितरं कर्तुमिच्छसि। आत्मानं च नरश्रेष्ठ मम वाक्यमिदं शृणु
If you wish to fulfill your father's truthful promise, O best of men, and honor yourself, then listen to these words of mine.
संनिदेशे पितुस्तिष्ठ यथानेन प्रतिश्रुतम्। त्वयारण्यं प्रवेष्टव्यं नव वर्षाणि पञ्च च
Abide by your father's command, as he has promised: you must enter the forest for fourteen years.
भरतश्चाभिषिच्येत यदेतदभिषेचनम्। त्वदर्थे विहितं राज्ञा तेन सर्वेण राघव
And let Bharata be consecrated; this consecration, O Rāghava, was arranged by the king entirely for your sake.
सप्त सप्त च वर्षाणि दण्डकारण्यमाश्रितः। अभिषेकमिदं त्यक्त्वा जटाचीरधरो भव
Having renounced this consecration, dwell in the Daṇḍaka forest for two periods of seven years, wearing matted hair and bark garments.
भरतः कोसलपतेः प्रशास्तु वसुधामिमाम्। नानारत्नसमाकीर्णां सवाजिरथसंकुलाम्
Let Bharata, lord of the Kosalas, rule this earth, filled with various jewels and crowded with horses and chariots.
एतेन त्वां नरेन्द्रोऽयं कारुण्येन समाप्लुतः। शोकैः संक्लिष्टवदनो न शक्नोति निरीक्षितुम्
Because of this, the king, overwhelmed with compassion and his face distressed with grief, is unable to look upon you.
एतत् कुरु नरेन्द्रस्य वचनं रघुनन्दन। सत्येन महता राम तारयस्व नरेश्वरम्
Do this bidding of the king, O delight of the Raghus; by your great truthfulness, O Rāma, deliver the lord of men.
इतीव तस्यां परुषं वदन्त्यां न चैव रामः प्रविवेश शोकम्। प्रविव्यथे चापि महानुभावो राजा च पुत्रव्यसनाभितप्तः
Thus, even as she spoke these harsh words, Rāma did not fall into sorrow; but the great-souled one was troubled, and the king was tormented by grief for his son.

Hear now the nineteenth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa.
तदप्रियममित्रघ्नो वचनं मरणोपमम्। श्रुत्वा न विव्यथे रामः कैकेयीं चेदमब्रवीत्
Hearing that unpleasant, death-like command, the destroyer of foes, Rāma, was not shaken and spoke thus to Kaikeyī:
एवमस्तु गमिष्यामि वनं वस्तुमहं त्वितः। जटाचीरधरो राज्ञः प्रतिज्ञामनुपालयन्
"So be it; I will go to the forest from here and dwell there, wearing matted hair and bark, upholding the king's promise."
इदं तु ज्ञातुमिच्छामि किमर्थं मां महीपतिः। नाभिनन्दति दुर्धर्षो यथापूर्वमरिंदमः
"But this I wish to know: for what reason does the mighty king, the subduer of enemies, not greet me as before?"
