संदिश्य रामं नृपतिः श्वोभाविन्यभिषेचने। पुरोहितं समाहूय वसिष्ठमिदमब्रवीत्
Having instructed Rāma regarding tomorrow's consecration, the king summoned the chief priest Vasiṣṭha and spoke to him as follows.
गच्छोपवासं काकुत्स्थं कारयाद्य तपोधन। श्रेयसे राज्यलाभाय वध्वा सह यतव्रत
Go, O descendant of Kakutstha, and have him observe a fast today with his wife, O possessor of austerities, for the sake of auspiciousness and attainment of the kingdom.
तथेति च स राजानमुक्त्वा वेदविदां वरः। स्वयं वसिष्ठो भगवान् ययौ रामनिवेशनम्
Saying, 'So be it,' the best of those versed in the Vedas, the venerable Vasiṣṭha, after addressing the king, went himself to Rāma's residence.
उपवासयितुं वीरं मन्त्रविन्मन्त्रकोविदम्। ब्राह्मं रथवरं युक्तमास्थाय सुधृतव्रतः
To have the heroic, wise, and ritual-knowing Rāma observe the fast, the steadfast Vasiṣṭha mounted his excellent Brahminical chariot.
तमागतमृषिं रामस्त्वरन्निव ससम्भ्रमम्। मानयिष्यन् स मानार्हं निश्चक्राम निवेशनात्
Rāma, eager and with respectful haste, went out from his residence to honor the sage who had arrived, for he was worthy of honor.
अभ्येत्य त्वरमाणोऽथ रथाभ्याशं मनीषिणः। ततोऽवतारयामास परिगृह्य रथात् स्वयम्
Hastening, he approached the wise one near the chariot and, taking him by the hand, personally helped him down from the chariot.
स चैनं प्रश्रितं दृष्ट्वा सम्भाष्याभिप्रसाद्य च। प्रियार्हं हर्षयन् राममित्युवाच पुरोहितः
Seeing him so humble, the priest spoke kindly to Rāma, delighting him with words befitting one dear and deserving.
प्रसन्नस्ते पिता राम यत्त्वं राज्यमवाप्स्यसि। उपवासं भवानद्य करोतु सह सीतया
Rāma, your father is pleased with you, and you shall obtain the kingdom; today, together with Sītā, you should undertake a fast.
प्रातस्त्वामभिषेक्ता हि यौवराज्ये नराधिपः। पिता दशरथः प्रीत्या ययातिं नहुषो यथा
For tomorrow, your father Daśaratha, out of affection, will anoint you as crown prince, just as Nahusha did for Yayāti.
इत्युक्त्वा स तदा राममुपवासं यतव्रतः। मन्त्रवत् कारयामास वैदेह्या सहितं शुचिः
Having spoken thus, the pure and self-restrained sage then had Rāma, together with Vaidehī, observe the prescribed fast according to the ritual.
ततो यथावद् रामेण स राज्ञो गुरुरर्चितः। अभ्यनुज्ञाप्य काकुत्स्थं ययौ रामनिवेशनात्
Then, having been duly honored by Rāma, the royal preceptor took leave of Kakutstha and departed from Rāma’s residence.
सुहृद्भिस्तत्र रामोऽपि सहासीनः प्रियंवदैः। सभाजितो विवेशाथ ताननुज्ञाप्य सर्वशः
There, Rāma, seated with his dear friends who spoke pleasant words, honored them and, after taking leave of them all, entered his house.
हृष्टनारीनरयुतं रामवेश्म तदा बभौ। यथा मत्तद्विजगणं प्रफुल्लनलिनं सरः
At that time, Rāma’s house shone, filled with joyful men and women, like a lake blooming with lotuses and thronged with intoxicated birds.
स राजभवनप्रख्यात् तस्माद् रामनिवेशनात्। निर्गत्य ददृशे मार्गं वसिष्ठो जनसंवृतम्
From that residence of Rāma, which was like a royal palace, Vasiṣṭha went out and saw the road crowded with people.
वृन्दवृन्दैरयोध्यायां राजमार्गाः समन्ततः। बभूवुरभिसम्बाधाः कुतूहलजनैर्वृताः
Throughout Ayodhyā, the royal roads were densely packed with groups of curious people on all sides.
जनवृन्दोर्मिसंघर्षहर्षस्वनवृतस्तदा। बभूव राजमार्गस्य सागरस्येव निःस्वनः
At that time, the sound of the crowds along the royal road, filled with waves of people’s joy, was like the roar of the ocean.
सिक्तसम्मृष्टरथ्या हि तथा च वनमालिनी। आसीदयोध्या तदहः समुच्छ्रितगृहध्वजा
That day, Ayodhyā, with its streets sprinkled and swept, adorned with forest garlands and tall house banners, appeared splendid.
तदा ह्ययोध्यानिलयः सस्त्रीबालाकुलो जनः। रामाभिषेकमाकांक्षन्नाकांक्षन्नुदयं रवेः
Then, the people of Ayodhyā, crowded with women and children, longed for Rāma’s consecration as eagerly as they awaited the sunrise.
प्रजालंकारभूतं च जनस्यानन्दवर्धनम्। उत्सुकोऽभूज्जनो द्रष्टुं तमयोध्यामहोत्सवम्
The people, adorned for the occasion and filled with joy, were eager to witness that great festival of Ayodhyā.
एवं तज्जनसम्बाधं राजमार्गं पुरोहितः। व्यूहन्निव जनौघं तं शनै राजकुलं ययौ
Thus, the royal priest, making his way through the crowded royal road, moved slowly toward the palace, as if parting the mass of people.
सिताभ्रशिखरप्रख्यं प्रासादमधिरुह्य च। समीयाय नरेन्द्रेण शक्रेणेव बृहस्पतिः
Ascending a palace that resembled a peak of white clouds, he approached the king, like Bṛhaspati coming to Indra.
तमागतमभिप्रेक्ष्य हित्वा राजासनं नृपः। पप्रच्छ स्वमतं तस्मै कृतमित्यभिवेदयत्
Seeing him arrive, the king rose from his throne and, after asking his opinion, informed him that everything had been accomplished.
तेन चैव तदा तुल्यं सहासीनाः सभासदः। आसनेभ्यः समुत्तस्थुः पूजयन्तः पुरोहितम्
Then, as he was equal to that one, the assembly members seated together rose from their seats, honoring the chief priest.
गुरुणा त्वभ्यनुज्ञातो मनुजौघं विसृज्य तम्। विवेशान्तःपुरं राजा सिंहो गिरिगुहामिव
Permitted by his guru, the king, leaving the multitude of men, entered the inner chambers like a lion entering a mountain cave.
तदग्र्यवेषप्रमदाजनाकुलं महेन्द्रवेश्मप्रतिमं निवेशनम्। व्यदीपयंश्चारु विवेश पार्थिवः शशीव तारागणसंकुलं नभः
That palace, crowded with women adorned in splendid attire and resembling Indra’s own mansion, the king entered, shining beautifully like the moon entering the sky filled with stars.

The sixth chapter is to be heard in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa, chapter six.
गते पुरोहिते रामः स्नातो नियतमानसः। सह पत्न्या विशालाक्ष्या नारायणमुपागमत्
When the chief priest had departed, Rāma, having bathed and with a disciplined mind, together with his wide-eyed wife, approached Nārāyaṇa.
प्रगृह्य शिरसा पात्रीं हविषो विधिवत् ततः। महते दैवतायाज्यं जुहाव ज्वलितानले
Then, holding the vessel of oblation in his hands and according to the rite, he offered clarified butter to the great deity into the blazing fire.
शेषं च हविषस्तस्य प्राश्याशास्यात्मनः प्रियम्। ध्यायन्नारायणं देवं स्वास्तीर्णे कुशसंस्तरे
Having eaten the remainder of the oblation, wishing for his own good, he sat meditating on the god Nārāyaṇa on a seat spread with sacred grass.
एकयामावशिष्टायां रात्र्यां प्रतिविबुध्य सः। अलंकारविधिं सम्यक् कारयामास वेश्मनः
When only one watch of the night remained, he awoke and had the house thoroughly adorned according to proper custom.
