तामग्निमद्भिर्गुणवद्भिरावृतां ::द्विजोत्तमैर्वेदषडङ्गपारगैः । सहस्रदैः सत्यरतैर्महात्मभि- ::र्महर्षिकल्पैर्ऋषिभिश्च केवलैः ॥१-५-
That city, surrounded by fire-like, virtuous, eminent twice-borns, masters of the six branches of the Vedas, by thousands of truth-devoted great souls, and by sages resembling great rishis and pure ascetics.

The sixth section is to be heard in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Bāla Kāṇḍa.
तस्यां पुर्यामयोध्यायां वेदवित् सर्वसंग्रहः । दीर्घदर्शी महातेजाः पौरजानपदप्रियः ॥१-६-
In that city of Ayodhyā, there was one learned in the Vedas, possessing all knowledge, farsighted, of great brilliance, beloved by citizens and country folk.
इक्ष्वाकूणामतिरथो यज्वा धर्मपरो वशी । महर्षिकल्पो राजर्षिस्त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतः ॥१-६-
Among the Ikṣvākus, he was a mighty charioteer, a sacrificer, devoted to righteousness, self-controlled; a royal sage like a great rishi, renowned in the three worlds.
बलवान् निहतामित्रो मित्रवान् विजितेन्द्रियः । धनैश्च संचयैश्चान्यैः शक्रवैश्रवणोपमः ॥१-६-
Strong, destroyer of enemies, friendly, master of his senses, and in wealth and treasures, equal to Indra and Kubera.
यथा मनुर्महातेजा लोकस्य परिरक्षिता । तथा दशरथो राजा लोकस्य परिरक्षिता ॥१-६-
Just as Manu, of great brilliance, was the protector of the world, so King Dasharatha was the protector of the world.
तेन सत्याभिसंधेन त्रिवर्गमनुतिष्ठता । पालिता सा पुरी श्रेष्ठा इन्द्रेणेवामरावती ॥१-६-
By his truthful resolve and observance of the threefold aim of life, that excellent city was governed, as Amaravati by Indra.
नाल्पसंनिचयः कश्चिदासीत् तस्मिन् पुरोत्तमे । कुटुम्बी यो ह्यसिद्धार्थोऽगवाश्वधनधान्यवान् ॥१-६-
In that foremost city, no one had little wealth; every householder was accomplished, possessing cows, horses, riches, and grain.
कामी वा न कदर्यो वा नृशंसः पुरुषः क्वचित् । द्रष्टुं शक्यमयोध्यायां नाविद्वान् न च नास्तिकः ॥१-६-
No one desirous or miserly, nor cruel man, could be seen in Ayodhyā; nor anyone ignorant or atheistic.
सर्वे नराश्च नार्यश्च धर्मशीलाः सुसंयताः । मुदिताः शीलवृत्ताभ्यां महर्षय इवामलाः ॥१-६-
All men and women were righteous in conduct, well-disciplined, joyful in character and behavior, pure like great sages.
नाकुण्डली नामुकुटी नास्रग्वी नाल्पभोगवान् । नामृष्टो न नलिप्ताङ्गो नासुगन्धश्च विद्यते ॥१-६-
No one was without earrings, without a crown, without a garland, with little enjoyment, unwashed, with unadorned limbs, or lacking pleasant fragrance.
नामृष्टभोजी नादाता नाप्यनङ्गदनिष्कधृक् । नाहस्ताभरणो वापि दृश्यते नाप्यनात्मवान् ॥१-६-
No one ate unclean food, nor was there a non-giver, nor anyone without armlets or necklaces, nor anyone without hand ornaments, nor anyone lacking self-control.
नानाहिताग्निर्नायज्वा न क्षुद्रो वा न तस्करः । कश्चिदासीदयोध्यायां न चार्वृत्तो न संकरः ॥१-६-
In Ayodhyā, there was no one who neglected sacred fires, no one who failed to perform sacrifices, no miser, no thief, no one of bad conduct, and no one of mixed caste.
स्वकर्मनिरता नित्यं ब्राह्मणा विजितेन्द्रियाः । दानाध्ययनशीलाश्च संयताश्च प्रतिग्रहे ॥१-६-
The Brāhmaṇas were always devoted to their duties, had mastered their senses, practiced charity and study, and were restrained in accepting gifts.
नास्तिको नानृती वापि न कश्चिदबहुश्रुतः । नासूयको न चाशक्तो नाविद्वान् विद्यते क्वचित् ॥१-६-
There was no atheist, no liar, no one lacking in learning, no one envious, no one incapable, and nowhere was there an unwise person.
नाषडङ्गविदत्रास्ति नाव्रतो नासहस्रदः । न दीनः क्षिप्तचित्तो वा व्यथितो वापि कश्चन ॥१-६-
There was no one ignorant of the six branches of learning, no one without vows, no one who gave little, no one poor, disturbed in mind, or afflicted.
कश्चिन्नरो वा नारी वा नाश्रीमान् नाप्यरूपवान् । द्रष्टुं शक्यमयोध्यायां नापि राजन्यभक्तिमान् ॥१-६-
No man or woman in Ayodhyā was without fortune or beauty, nor was there anyone lacking devotion to the king.
वर्णेष्वग्र्यचतुर्थेषु देवतातिथिपूजकाः । कृतज्ञाश्च वदान्याश्च शूरा विक्रमसंयुताः ॥१-६-
Among the higher three castes, they worshipped gods and guests, were grateful, generous, heroic, and endowed with valor.
दीर्घायुषो नराः सर्वे धर्मं सत्यं च संश्रिताः । सहिताः पुत्रपौत्रैश्च नित्यं स्त्रीभिः पुरोत्तमे ॥१-६-
All the people lived long lives, devoted to righteousness and truth, always together with their sons, grandsons, and wives in that foremost city.
क्षत्रं ब्रह्ममुखं चासीद् वैश्याः क्षत्रमनुव्रताः । शूद्राः स्वधर्मनिरतास्त्रीन् वर्णानुपचारिणः ॥१-६-
The kṣatriyas were the support of the brāhmaṇas, the vaiśyas were devoted to the kṣatriyas, and the śūdras were intent on their own duties, serving the three higher castes.
सा तेनेक्ष्वाकुनाथेन पुरी सुपरिरक्षिता । यथा पुरस्तान्मनुना मानवेन्द्रेण धीमता ॥१-६-
That city was well protected by the lord of the Ikṣvāku line, just as it had been in ancient times by Manu, the wise king of men.
योधानामग्निकल्पानां पेशलानाममर्षिणाम् । सम्पूर्णा कृतविद्यानां गुहा केसरिणामिव ॥१-६-
It was filled with warriors like fire, skilled, gracious, and unyielding, accomplished in their arts, like a cave full of lions.
काम्बोजविषये जातैर्बाह्लीकैश्च हयोत्तमैः । वनायुजैर्नदीजैश्च पूर्णा हरिहयोत्तमैः ॥१-६-
It was filled with the best horses born in the lands of the Kāmbojas and Bāhlīkas, and with excellent forest and river horses.
विन्ध्यपर्वतजैर्मत्तैः पूर्णा हैमवतैरपि । मदान्वितैरतिबलैर्मातङ्गैः पर्वतोपमैः ॥१-६-
It was filled with intoxicated elephants from the Vindhya mountains and the Himalayas, mighty and powerful, resembling mountains.
ऐरावतकुलीनैश्च महापद्मकुलैस्तथा । अञ्जनादपि निष्क्रान्तैर्वामनादपि च द्विपैः ॥१-६-
There were elephants descended from the Airāvata and Mahāpadma lineages, and those emerging from Añjana and Vāmana mountains.
भदैर्मन्द्रैर्मृगैश्चैव भद्रमन्द्रमृगैस्तथा । भद्रमन्द्रैर्भद्रमृगैर्मृगमन्द्रैश्च सा पुरी ॥१-६-
That city was also filled with bhadra, mandra, mṛga, bhadramandra, bhadramṛga, and mṛgamandra elephants.
नित्यमत्तैः सदा पूर्णा नागैरचलसंनिभैः । सा योजने द्वे च भूयः सत्यनामा प्रकाशते । यस्यां दशरथो राजा वसञ्जगदपालयत् ॥१-६-
Always filled with intoxicated elephants resembling mountains, that city, known as Satyanāmā, extended for more than two yojanas, where King Daśaratha dwelled and protected the world.
तां पुरीं स महातेजा राजा दशरथो महान् । शशास शमितामित्रो नक्षत्राणीव चन्द्रमाः ॥१-६-
That great and radiant king Daśaratha ruled that city, subduing his enemies, like the moon among the stars.
तां सत्यनामां दृढतोरणार्गलाम् ::गृहैर्विचित्रैरुपशोभितां शिवाम् । पुरीमयोध्यां नृसहस्रसंकुलां ::शशास वै शक्रसमो महीपतिः ॥१-६-
That city of Ayodhyā, named Satyanāmā, with strong gates and bars, adorned with splendid houses, auspicious, and crowded with thousands of men, was ruled by the king, equal to Indra.
