शक्तस्त्रैलोक्यमप्येष भोक्तुं किं नु महीमिमाम्। नास्य क्रोधः प्रसादश्च निरर्थोऽस्ति कदाचन
He is capable even of enjoying the three worlds—what then of this earth? His anger and favor are never without purpose.
हन्त्येष नियमाद् वध्यानवध्येषु न कुप्यति। युनक्त्यर्थैः प्रहृष्टश्च तमसौ यत्र तुष्यति
Indeed, he puts to death those who must be punished, yet does not grow angry with the innocent; he gives wealth with joy, and is pleased where there is righteousness.
दान्तैः सर्वप्रजाकान्तैः प्रीतिसंजननैर्नृणाम्। गुणैर्विरोचते रामो दीप्तः सूर्य इवांशुभिः
Rāma shines with virtues—self-controlled, beloved by all people, and a source of joy—like the radiant sun with its rays.
तमेवंगुणसम्पन्नं रामं सत्यपराक्रमम्। लोकपालोपमं नाथमकामयत मेदिनी
The earth herself desired Rāma, endowed with such qualities, steadfast in truth and valor, and a protector like the guardians of the world.
वत्सः श्रेयसि जातस्ते दिष्ट्यासौ तव राघवः। दिष्ट्या पुत्रगुणैर्युक्तो मारीच इव कश्यपः
Child, you are blessed with a son who excels in virtue; by fortune, this Rāghava is yours, endowed with the qualities of a son, like Marīca to Kaśyapa.
बलमारोग्यमायुश्च रामस्य विदितात्मनः। देवासुरमनुष्येषु सगन्धर्वोरगेषु च
The strength, health, and life of Rāma, who knows himself, are renowned among gods, asuras, humans, gandharvas, and serpents.
आशंसते जनः सर्वो राष्ट्रे पुरवरे तथा। आभ्यन्तरश्च बाह्यश्च पौरजानपदो जनः
All the people, both within the city and outside, in the kingdom and the capital, hope for him.
स्त्रियो वृद्धास्तरुण्यश्च सायं प्रातः समाहिताः। सर्वा देवान्नमस्यन्ति रामस्यार्थे मनस्विनः। तेषां तद् याचितं देव त्वत्प्रसादात्समृद्ध्यताम्
Women, elders, and young maidens, focused in mind, worship the gods morning and evening for Rāma’s sake; may their prayer, O god, be fulfilled by your grace.
राममिन्दीवरश्यामं सर्वशत्रुनिबर्हणम्। पश्यामो यौवराज्यस्थं तव राजोत्तमात्मजम्
May we see Rāma, dark as a blue lotus and destroyer of all enemies, established in the office of crown prince, your excellent son, O king.
तं देवदेवोपममात्मजं ते सर्वस्य लोकस्य हिते निविष्टम्। हिताय नः क्षिप्रमुदारजुष्टं मुदाभिषेक्तुं वरद त्वमर्हसि
O bestower of boons, you should quickly anoint your son, who is like the lord of gods, devoted to the welfare of all people, and endowed with noble virtues, for our happiness.

Hear now the third sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa.
तेषामञ्जलिपद्मानि प्रगृहीतानि सर्वशः। प्रतिगृह्याब्रवीद् राजा तेभ्यः प्रियहितं वचः
The king, having received all their lotus-like joined palms, spoke to them words that were pleasing and beneficial.
अहोऽस्मि परमप्रीतः प्रभावश्चातुलो मम। यन्मे ज्येष्ठं प्रियं पुत्रं यौवराज्यस्थमिच्छथ
Ah, I am supremely delighted and my power is unmatched, since you wish my eldest beloved son to be installed as crown prince.
चैत्रः श्रीमानयं मासः पुण्यः पुष्पितकाननः। यौवराज्याय रामस्य सर्वमेवोपकल्प्यताम्
This auspicious month of Caitra has come, holy and with blossoming groves; let everything be prepared for Rāma’s installation as crown prince.
राज्ञस्तूपरते वाक्ये जनघोषो महानभूत्। शनैस्तस्मिन् प्रशान्ते च जनघोषे जनाधिपः
When the king’s words ended, a great clamor arose among the people; and when that noise gradually subsided, the king,
वसिष्ठं मुनिशार्दूलं राजा वचनमब्रवीत्। अभिषेकाय रामस्य यत् कर्म सपरिच्छदम्
Spoke to Vasiṣṭha, the foremost sage, saying: ‘Whatever is required for Rāma’s consecration, with all its arrangements—’
तदद्य भगवन् सर्वमाज्ञापयितुमर्हसि। तच्छ्रुत्वा भूमिपालस्य वसिष्ठो मुनिसत्तमः
Today, O venerable one, you should command everything; hearing the king’s words, Vasiṣṭha, the best of sages,
आदिदेशाग्रतो राज्ञः स्थितान् युक्तान् कृताञ्जलीन्। सुवर्णादीनि रत्नानि बलीन् सर्वौषधीरपि
Ordered those who stood before the king, hands joined in reverence, to bring gold and other jewels, tributes, and all medicinal herbs.
शुक्लमाल्यानि लाजांश्च पृथक् च मधुसर्पिषी। अहतानि च वासांसि रथं सर्वायुधान्यपि
White garlands, parched grains, honey and clarified butter separately, unworn garments, a chariot, and all kinds of weapons as well.
चतुरङ्गबलं चैव गजं च शुभलक्षणम्। चामरव्यजने चोभे ध्वजं छत्रं च पाण्डुरम्
Let the fourfold army be prepared, along with an elephant of auspicious marks, both fly-whisks, the white umbrella, and the banner.
शतं च शातकुम्भानां कुम्भानामग्निवर्चसाम्। हिरण्यशृङ्गमृषभं समग्रं व्याघ्रचर्म च
Let there be a hundred golden water jars, a bull with golden horns, and a complete tiger skin.
यच्चान्यत् किंचिदेष्टव्यं तत् सर्वमुपकल्प्यताम्। उपस्थापयत प्रातरग्न्यगारे महीपतेः
And whatever else is desirable, let all that be arranged; present everything at dawn in the king’s fire-chamber.
अन्तःपुरस्य द्वाराणि सर्वस्य नगरस्य च। चन्दनस्रग्भिरर्च्यन्तां धूपैश्च घ्राणहारिभिः
Let the gates of the inner palace and of the whole city be honored with sandalwood garlands and fragrant incense.
प्रशस्तमन्नं गुणवद् दधिक्षीरोपसेचनम्। द्विजानां शतसाहस्रं यत्प्रकाममलं भवेत्
Let excellent, wholesome food with curds and milk as condiments be provided in abundance for hundreds of thousands of Brahmins, as much as they desire.
सत्कृत्य द्विजमुख्यानां श्वः प्रभाते प्रदीयताम्। घृतं दधि च लाजाश्च दक्षिणाश्चापि पुष्कलाः
Having honored the foremost Brahmins, let ghee, curds, parched grains, and abundant gifts be given to them tomorrow morning.
सूर्येऽभ्युदितमात्रे श्वो भविता स्वस्तिवाचनम्। ब्राह्मणाश्च निमन्त्र्यन्तां कल्प्यन्तामासनानि च
As soon as the sun rises tomorrow, let the auspicious rites be performed; let Brahmins be invited and seats be arranged for them.
आबध्यन्तां पताकाश्च राजमार्गश्च सिच्यताम्। सर्वे च तालापचरा गणिकाश्च स्वलंकृताः
Let banners be fastened and the royal road be sprinkled; let all the doorkeepers and courtesans be adorned.
कक्ष्यां द्वितीयामासाद्य तिष्ठन्तु नृपवेश्मनः। देवायतनचैत्येषु सान्नभक्ष्याः सदक्षिणाः
Let those with food and gifts stand in the second courtyard of the royal residence, and at temples and shrines.
उपस्थापयितव्याः स्युर्माल्ययोग्याः पृथक्पृथक्। दीर्घासिबद्धगोधाश्च संनद्धा मृष्टवाससः
Let those fit to bear garlands be stationed separately; let those with long swords and leather belts, fully armed and splendidly dressed, be present.
महाराजाङ्गनं शूराः प्रविशन्तु महोदयम्। एवं व्यादिश्य विप्रौ तु क्रियास्तत्र विनिष्ठितौ
Let the valiant men enter the great royal hall; thus, having given these instructions, the two Brahmins completed the arrangements there.
