बिभीषणमथोवाच राक्षसेन्द्रं महायशाः । यावत्प्रजा धरिष्यन्ति तावत्त्वं वै बिभीषण । राक्षसेन्द्र महावीर्य लङ्कास्थस्त्वं धरिष्यसि ।। ७.१०८.
Then the illustrious Rāma spoke to Bibhīṣaṇa, the king of the rākṣasas: 'As long as there are people, O Bibhīṣaṇa, you, mighty king of the rākṣasas, shall remain in Laṅkā.'
यावच्चन्द्रश्च सूर्यश्च यावत्तिष्ठति मेदिनी । यावच्च मत्कथा लोके तावद्राज्यं तवास्त्विह ।। ७.१०८.
'As long as the moon and sun endure, as long as the earth stands, as long as my story is told in the world, so long shall your reign be here.'
शासितस्त्वं सखित्वेन कार्यं ते मम शासनम् । प्रजाः संरक्ष धर्मेण नोत्तरं वक्तुमर्हसि ।। ७.१०८.
'You are instructed as a friend; my command must be carried out by you. Protect your people with righteousness and do not speak otherwise.'
किञ्चान्यद्वक्तुमिच्छामि राक्षसेन्द्र महामते ।। ७.१०८.
'And, O king of the rākṣasas, great in wisdom, I wish to say something else.'
आराधय जगन्नाथमिक्ष्वाकुकुलदैवतम् । आराधनीयमनिशं सर्वैर्दैवैः सवासवैः ।। ७.१०८.
'Worship the Lord of the Universe, the deity of the Ikṣvāku lineage, who is to be constantly worshipped by all the gods along with the guardians of the quarters.'
तथेति प्रतिजग्राह रामवाक्यं विभीषणः । राजा राक्षसमुख्यानां राघवाज्ञामनुस्मरन् ।। ७.१०८.
Vibhīṣaṇa accepted Rāma’s words, saying, 'So be it,' and, remembering Rāghava’s command, ruled as king over the foremost of the rākṣasas.
तमेवमुक्त्वा काकुत्स्थो हनूमन्तमथाब्रवीत् । जीविते कृतबुद्धिस्त्वं मा प्रतिज्ञां विलोपय ।। ७.१०८.
Having thus spoken, the descendant of Kakutstha then addressed Hanumān: 'You, who have resolved to live, do not abandon your promise.'
मत्कथाः प्रचरिष्यन्ति यावल्लोके हरीश्वर । तावद्रमस्व सुप्रीतो मद्वाक्यमनुपालयन् ।। ७.१०८.
'As long as my stories circulate in the world, O lord of monkeys, remain here, well-pleased, upholding my words.'
एवमुक्तस्तु हनुमान्राघवेण महात्मना । वाक्यं विज्ञापयामास परं हर्षमवाप्य च ।। ७.१०८.
Thus addressed by the great-souled Rāghava, Hanumān, filled with supreme joy, submitted his reply.
यावत्तव कथा लोके विचरिष्यति पावनी । तावत्स्थास्यामि मेदिन्यां तवाज्ञामनुपालयन् ।। ७.१०८.
'As long as your sacred story spreads in the world, so long shall I remain on earth, carrying out your command.'
जाम्बवन्तं तथोक्त्वा तु वृद्धं ब्रह्मसुतं तथा । मैन्दं च द्विविदं चैव पञ्च जाम्बवता सह । यावत्कलिश्च सम्प्राप्तस्तावज्जीवत सर्वदा ।। ७.१०८.
Having thus addressed Jāmbavān, the aged son of Brahmā, as well as Mainda and Dvivida, together with the five led by Jāmbavān, he said: 'Live on as long as the Kali age has not arrived.'
तानेवमुक्त्वा काकुत्स्थः सर्वांस्तानृक्षवानरान् । उवाच बाढं गच्छध्वं मया सार्धं यथेप्सितम् ।। ७.१०८.
Having spoken thus, Kakutstha addressed all those bears and monkeys: 'Very well, go as you wish, together with me.'
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे ऽष्टोतरशततमः सर्गः
Thus ends the one hundred and eighth sarga in the sacred Uttarakāṇḍa of the venerable Rāmāyaṇa, the first epic composed by Vālmīki.
प्रभातायां तु शर्वर्यां पृथुवक्षा महायशाः । रामः कमलपत्राक्षः पुरोधसमथाब्रवीत् ।। ७.१०९.
When the night had passed and morning had come, Rama, broad-chested and renowned, lotus-eyed, spoke to the priest.
अग्निहोत्रं व्रजत्वग्रे दीप्यमानं सह द्विजैः । वाजपेयातपत्रं च शोभमानं महापथे ।। ७.१०९.
Let the fire sacrifice proceed ahead, blazing, accompanied by the twice-born; and let the Vājapeya umbrella, shining, go along the great road.
ततो वसिष्ठस्तेजस्वी सर्वं निरवशेषतः । चकार विधिवद्धर्मं महाप्रास्थानिकं विधिम् ।। ७.१०९.
Then the radiant Vasiṣṭha performed all the rites completely, according to rule, the Mahāprāsthānika ceremony.
ततः सूक्ष्माम्बरधरो ब्रह्ममावर्तयन्परम् । कुशान्गृहीत्वा पाणिभ्यां प्रसज्य प्रययावथ ।। ७.१०९.
Then, wearing fine garments, he recited the supreme Brahma-hymn, took kuśa grass in his hands, and set out, having bowed.
अव्याहरन्क्वचित्किञ्चिन्निश्चेष्टो निःसुखः पथि । निर्जगाम गृहात्तस्माद्दीप्यमान इवांशुमान् ।। ७.१०९.
He uttered nothing anywhere, moved without action, joyless on the path; he departed from that house, shining like the sun.
रामस्य दक्षिणे पार्श्वे सपद्मा श्रीरपाश्रिता । सव्ये तु ह्रीर्महादेवी व्यवसायस्तथाग्रतः ।। ७.१०९.
On Rama's right side was Śrī, with lotuses, sheltered; on the left, the great goddess Hrī; and determination was in front.
शरा नानाविधाश्चापि धनुरायतमुत्तमम् । तथा ऽ ऽयुधानि ते सर्वे ययुः पुरुषविग्रहाः ।। ७.१०९.
Various arrows and the excellent, stretched bow, as well as all those weapons, took on human forms and went along.
वेदा ब्राह्मणरूपेण गायत्री सर्वरक्षिणी । ओङ्कारो ऽथ वषट्कारः सर्वे राममनुव्रताः ।। ७.१०९.
The Vedas, in the form of Brāhmaṇas, the Gayatri, protector of all, the syllable Om and the Vaṣaṭ call—all followed Rama faithfully.
ऋषयश्च महात्मानः सर्व एव महीसुराः । अन्वगच्छन्महात्मानं स्वर्गद्वारमपावृतम् ।। ७.१०९.
The great sages, all the mighty gods of earth, followed the great-souled one toward the open gateway of heaven.
तं यान्तमनुगच्छन्ति ह्यन्तःपुरचराः स्त्रियः । सवृद्धबालदासीकाः सवर्षवरकिङ्कराः ।। ७.१०९.
The women of the inner chambers followed him as he went, along with elders, children, maidservants, and all the various attendants.
सान्तःपुरश्च भरतः शत्रुघ्नसहितो ययौ । रामं गतिमुपागम्य साग्निहोत्रमनुव्रतः ।। ७.१०९.
Bharata, together with Śatrughna, went with the inner household, having reached Rama's path, devoted to the fire sacrifice.
ते च सर्वे महात्मानः साग्निहोत्राः समागताः । सपुत्रदाराः काकुत्स्थमनुजग्मुर्महामतिम् ।। ७.१०९.
All those great souls, with fire sacrifices, assembled, with sons and wives, followed Kakutstha, the wise one.
मन्त्रिणो भृत्यवर्गाश्च सपुत्रपशुबान्धवाः । सर्वे सहानुगा राममन्वगच्छन्प्रहृष्टवत् ।। ७.१०९.
The ministers, groups of servants, with sons, cattle, and relatives—all, together with their followers, joyfully accompanied Rama.
ततः सर्वाः प्रकृतयो हृष्टपुष्टजनावृताः । गच्छन्तमन्वगछंस्तं राघवं गुणरञ्जिताः ।। ७.१०९.
Then all the subjects, surrounded by joyful and nourished people, followed that Rāghava, charmed by his virtues.
ततः सस्त्रीपुमांसस्ते सपक्षिपशुवाहनाः । राघवस्यानुगाः सर्वे हृष्टा विगतकल्मषाः ।। ७.१०९.
Then, men and women, with birds, cattle, and vehicles, all followed Rāghava, joyful and free from sin.
स्नाताः प्रमुदिताः सर्वे हृष्टाः पुष्टाश्च वानराः । दृढं किलकिलाशब्दैः सर्वं राममनुव्रतम् ।। ७.१०९.
All the monkeys, bathed, joyful, nourished, and delighted, loudly made cheerful sounds, all devoted to Rama.
न तत्र कश्चिद्दीनो वा व्रीडितो वा ऽपि दुःखितः । हृष्टं समुदितं सर्वं बभूव परमाद्भुतम् ।। ७.१०९.
There, no one was poor, ashamed, or sorrowful; all were joyful and gathered together, and it was most wondrous.
