This, O mighty-armed one, is a dreadful and hair-raising destruction seen for you—the separation from Lakṣmaṇa, O Rāma of great fame.
Abandon him; time is powerful—do not let your vow be made in vain. If the vow is destroyed, even righteousness would come to an end.
Then, with righteousness destroyed, the three worlds with all their moving and unmoving beings, with all the gods and sages, would surely perish—there is no doubt.
Therefore, O tiger among men, for the protection of the three worlds, even without Lakṣmaṇa, today you must keep the world in order.
Hearing those words, filled with righteousness and purpose, spoken by them as they were all assembled, Rāma spoke to Lakṣmaṇa in the midst of the assembly.
I release you, O son of Sumitrā; let there be no transgression of righteousness. For the virtuous, abandonment or death—both are considered equal.
When Rāma had spoken these words, Lakṣmaṇa, his senses overwhelmed by tears, quickly departed and did not enter his own house.
He went to the bank of the Sarayū, performed purification, stood with joined palms, restrained all his senses, and did not release his breath.
As he stood there, holding his breath, composed, all the gods with Indra, the hosts of Apsarases, and all the sages showered him with flowers.
Invisible to all humans, the mighty Lakṣmaṇa, with his body, was taken by Indra and entered the heavenly realm.
Then, seeing that a fourth part of Viṣṇu had arrived, all the best of the gods, filled with joy, worshipped him together with the sages.
Thus ends the one hundred and sixth sarga of the glorious Uttarakāṇḍa in the ancient and revered Rāmāyaṇa composed by Vālmīki.
Having sent away Lakṣmaṇa, Rāma, filled with sorrow and grief, spoke these words to the priests, ministers, and citizens.
Today I will consecrate Bharata, who is devoted to righteousness, as king of Ayodhyā, and then I shall go to the forest.
Prepare the necessary materials—let there be no delay due to time. Today itself I will go to the path that Lakṣmaṇa has gone.
Hearing these words spoken by Rāghava, all the citizens, bowing their heads to the ground, became as if lifeless.
Hearing Rāma's words, Bharata lost consciousness, condemned the kingship, and spoke these words to Rāghava.
By truth I swear, O King, I do not desire the heavenly world, nor do I long for the kingdom, O delight of the Raghus, without you.
O King, enthrone these two, Kuśa and Lava: let the heroic Kuśa rule in Kosala, and Lava in the northern lands.
Let swift and valiant messengers go to Śatrughna; let them quickly announce our departure to heaven.
Hearing this and seeing the citizens with downcast faces, tormented by sorrow, Bharata spoke, and then Vasiṣṭha addressed them.
Child Rāma, see these people of the land who have come; know their wish and do not do anything displeasing to them.
Then, at Vasiṣṭha’s words, Rāma raised up the people and said to all, 'What shall I do?'
Then all the people spoke to Rāma: 'Wherever you go, O Rāma, we will follow you.'
If you have affection and supreme love for the citizens, O descendant of Kakutstha, then with our sons and wives we will join you on the righteous path.
Whether it be forest, wilderness, river, or ocean, if we are not to be abandoned by you, O Lord, then lead us all.
This is our highest joy, this is our greatest boon; our hearts’ constant delight is to follow you, O King.
Rāma affirmed the citizens’ steadfast devotion, saying, 'So be it,' and, reflecting on his destined end, he did so that very day.
Rāma enthroned the heroic Kuśa in Kosala and Lava in the northern lands, both noble sons.
Having installed his sons on the throne, Rāma embraced them, seated them on his lap, and repeatedly kissed their heads.
