'I will curse you, your city, Rāghava, Bharata, and your entire lineage, O Saumitri.'
I can no longer bear anger in my heart. Hearing those dreadful words from that great soul, he pondered in his mind the meaning of his statement.
Let the death of one suffice for me; let there not be destruction of all. Thus, having resolved with his intellect, he reported it to Rāghava.
Hearing Lakṣmaṇa’s words, Rāma, setting aside the appointed time, quickly went out and saw the son of Atri.
He, having saluted the great soul who shone like fire with his brilliance, the descendant of Kakutstha, with joined palms, spoke: 'What is to be done?'
Hearing those words spoken by Rāghava, the eminent sage addressed Rāma: 'Listen, O lover of righteousness.'
Today marks the completion of a thousand years of my austerity. Therefore, O sinless one, I desire food prepared as you have it.
Hearing that request, King Rāghava, with a delighted mind, brought food prepared as it was to the foremost sage.
Having eaten that food, which was like nectar, the best of sages, addressing him, said, 'Well done, Rāma,' and returned to his own hermitage.
When the eminent sage had departed to his hermitage, Lakṣmaṇa’s elder brother, recalling the words of Time, was overcome by sorrow.
Tormented by grief, remembering that dreadful vision, he became downcast and dejected, unable to speak.
Then, having resolved in his mind the words of Time, Rāghava, deciding that it must be so, sat silently, renowned as he was.
Thus ends the one hundred and fifth sarga in the glorious Uttarakāṇḍa of the sacred Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, the first epic.
Seeing Rāghava downcast and silent, like the moon eclipsed, Lakṣmaṇa, delighted, spoke sweet words.
O mighty-armed one, you should not grieve on my account; for the course of Time is fixed by previous creation.
Slay me, gentle one, without hesitation; keep your vow. Men who break their vows, O descendant of Kakutstha, go to hell.
If there is affection, O great king, if I am worthy of your favor, slay me without doubt; increase righteousness, O Rāghava.
Thus addressed by Lakṣmaṇa, Rāma, his senses agitated, summoned his counselors and also the officiating priest.
Then, in their midst, Rāghava narrated the events, the arrival of Durvāsas, and the ascetic’s vow.
Hearing this, all the ministers together with the priests sat down; then the great and radiant Vasiṣṭha spoke these words.
This, O mighty-armed one, is a dreadful and hair-raising destruction seen for you—the separation from Lakṣmaṇa, O Rāma of great fame.
Abandon him; time is powerful—do not let your vow be made in vain. If the vow is destroyed, even righteousness would come to an end.
Then, with righteousness destroyed, the three worlds with all their moving and unmoving beings, with all the gods and sages, would surely perish—there is no doubt.
Therefore, O tiger among men, for the protection of the three worlds, even without Lakṣmaṇa, today you must keep the world in order.
Hearing those words, filled with righteousness and purpose, spoken by them as they were all assembled, Rāma spoke to Lakṣmaṇa in the midst of the assembly.
I release you, O son of Sumitrā; let there be no transgression of righteousness. For the virtuous, abandonment or death—both are considered equal.
When Rāma had spoken these words, Lakṣmaṇa, his senses overwhelmed by tears, quickly departed and did not enter his own house.
He went to the bank of the Sarayū, performed purification, stood with joined palms, restrained all his senses, and did not release his breath.
As he stood there, holding his breath, composed, all the gods with Indra, the hosts of Apsarases, and all the sages showered him with flowers.
Invisible to all humans, the mighty Lakṣmaṇa, with his body, was taken by Indra and entered the heavenly realm.
