पद्मे दिव्ये ऽर्कसङ्काशे नाभ्यामुत्पाद्य मामपि । प्राजापत्यं त्वया कर्म मयि सर्वं निवेशितम् ।। ७.१०४.
In the divine lotus, radiant as the sun, you produced me from your navel; all the creative work was entrusted to me by you.
सो ऽहं सन्न्यस्तभारो हि त्वामुपासे जगत्पतिम् । रक्षां विधत्स्व भूतेषु मम तेजस्करो भवान् ।। ७.१०४.
Having laid down my burden, I worship you, the lord of the world; please establish protection among beings, for you are the source of my power.
ततस्त्वमपि दुर्धर्षात्तस्माद्भावात्सनातनात् । रक्षार्थं सर्वभूतानां विष्णुत्वमुपजग्मिवान् ।। ७.१०४.
Therefore, from that eternal state, you became Vishnu for the purpose of protecting all beings, being unconquerable.
अदित्यां वीर्यवान्पुत्रो भ्रातऽणां वीर्यवर्धनः । समुत्पन्नेषु कृत्येषु तेषां साह्याय कल्पसे ।। ७.१०४.
A mighty son was born to Aditi, an increaser of his brothers' strength; when tasks arise among them, you are fit to aid them.
स त्वं वित्रास्यमानासु प्रजासु जगतां वर । रावणस्य वधाकाङ्क्षी मानुषेषु मनो ऽदधाः ।। ७.१०४.
Therefore, when the people were being terrified, O best of the worlds, you set your mind among men, desiring the destruction of Rāvaṇa.
दश वर्षसहस्राणि दश वर्षशतानि च । कृत्वा वासस्य नियतिं स्वयमेवात्मना पुरा ।। ७.१०४.
For ten thousand years and a further thousand years, you yourself observed the vow of residence in former times.
स त्वं मनोमयः पुत्रः पूर्णायुर्मानुषेष्विह । कालो ऽयं ते नरश्रेष्ठ समीपमुपवर्तितुम् ।। ७.१०४.
Thus, your mind-born son, with a full lifespan, has now appeared among men; this is the time, O best of men, for you to draw near.
यदि भूयो महाराज प्रजा इच्छस्युपासितुम् । वस वा वीर भद्रं त एवमाह पितामहः ।। ७.१०४.
If, O great king, you wish again to serve the people, then remain, O hero, blessed one—thus spoke the Grandfather.
अथ वा विजिगीषा ते सुरलोकाय राघव । सनाथा विष्णुना देवा भवन्तु विगतज्वराः ।। ७.१०४.
Or if you desire to conquer the world of the gods, O Rāghava, let the gods, now protected by Viṣṇu, be free from distress.
श्रुत्वा पितामहेनोक्तं वाक्यं कालसमीरितम् । राघवः प्रहसन्वाक्यं सर्वसंहारमब्रवीत् ।। ७.१०४.
Hearing these words spoken by the Grandfather, uttered by Time, Rāghava, smiling, addressed the destroyer of all.
श्रुत्वा मे देवदेवस्य वाक्यं परममद्भुतम् । प्रीतिर्हि महती जाता तवागमनसम्भवा ।। ७.१०४.
Hearing this most wondrous speech of the god of gods, great joy has arisen in me because of your arrival.
त्रयाणामपि लोकानां कार्यार्थं मम सम्भवः । भद्रं ते ऽस्तु गमिष्यामि यत एवाहमागतः ।। ७.१०४.
My descent took place for the sake of the tasks of the three worlds; may it be well with you—I shall go to whence I came.
हद्गतो ह्यसि सम्प्राप्तो न मे तत्र विचारणा । मया हि सर्वकृत्येषु देवानां वशवर्तिनाम् । स्थातव्यं सर्वसंहार यथा ह्याह पितामहः ।। ७.१०४.
For you have come here in person—there is no hesitation in me; in all tasks of the gods, who are under my control, I must act as the Grandfather has said, O destroyer of all.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे चतुरधिकशततमः सर्गः
Thus ends the one hundred and fourth sarga of the glorious Uttarakāṇḍa in the ancient poem, the holy Rāmāyaṇa composed by Vālmīki.
तथा तयोः संवदतोर्दुर्वासा भगवानृषिः । रामस्य दर्शनाकाङ्क्षी राजद्वारमुपागमत् ।। ७.१०५.
As they were conversing thus, the venerable sage Durvāsas, desiring to see Rāma, approached the royal gate.
सो ऽभिगम्य तु सौमित्रिमुवाच ऋषिसत्तमः । रामं दर्शय मे शीघ्रं पुरा मे ऽर्थो ऽतिवर्तते ।। ७.१०५.
Having come near, the foremost of sages spoke to Saumitri: 'Show me Rāma quickly, before my purpose is lost.'
मुनेस्तु भाषितं श्रुत्वा लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा । अभिवाद्य महात्मानं वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ।। ७.१०५.
Hearing the sage's words, Lakṣmaṇa, destroyer of enemy heroes, respectfully greeted the great-souled one and spoke these words.
किं कार्यं ब्रूहि भगवन्को वा ऽर्थः किं करोम्यहम् । व्यग्रो हि राघवो ब्रह्मन्मुहूर्तं प्रतिपाल्यताम् ।। ७.१०५.
'Tell me, venerable one, what is your business? What purpose shall I fulfill? Rāghava is occupied, O brāhmaṇa; please wait a moment.'
तच्छ्रुत्वा ऋषिशार्दूलः क्रोधेन कलुषीकृतः । उवाच लक्ष्मणं वाक्यं निर्दहन्निव चक्षुषा ।। ७.१०५.
Hearing this, the tiger among sages, his mind clouded by anger, spoke to Lakṣmaṇa, his gaze as if burning.
अस्मिन्क्षणे मां सौमित्रे रामाय प्रतिवेदय । अस्मिन्क्षणे मां सौमित्रे न निवेदयसे यदि ।। ७.१०५.
'O Saumitri, announce me to Rāma this very moment; if you do not announce me this very moment, O Saumitri—'
विषयं त्वां पुरं चैव शपिष्ये राघवं तथा । भरतं चैव सौमित्रे युष्माकं या च सन्ततिः ।। ७.१०५.
'I will curse you, your city, Rāghava, Bharata, and your entire lineage, O Saumitri.'
न हि शक्ष्याम्यहं भूयो मन्युं धारयितुं हृदि । तच्छ्रुत्वा घोरसङ्काशं वाक्यं तस्य महात्मनः । चिन्तयामास मनसा तस्य वाक्यस्य निश्चयम् ।। ७.१०५.
I can no longer bear anger in my heart. Hearing those dreadful words from that great soul, he pondered in his mind the meaning of his statement.
एकस्य मरणं मे ऽस्तु मा भूत्सर्वविनाशनम् । इति बुद्ध्या विनिश्चित्य राघवाय न्यवेदयत् ।। ७.१०५.
Let the death of one suffice for me; let there not be destruction of all. Thus, having resolved with his intellect, he reported it to Rāghava.
लक्ष्मणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा रामः कालं विसृज्य च । निस्सृत्य त्वरितं राजा अत्रेः पुत्रं ददर्श ह ।। ७.१०५.
Hearing Lakṣmaṇa’s words, Rāma, setting aside the appointed time, quickly went out and saw the son of Atri.
सो ऽभिवाद्य महात्मानं ज्वलन्तमिव तेजसा । किं कार्यमिति काकुत्स्थः कृताञ्जलिरभाषत ।। ७.१०५.
He, having saluted the great soul who shone like fire with his brilliance, the descendant of Kakutstha, with joined palms, spoke: 'What is to be done?'
तद्वाक्यं राघवेणोक्तं श्रुत्वा मुनिवरः प्रभुम् । प्रत्याह रामं दुर्वासाः श्रूयतां धर्मवत्सल ।। ७.१०५.
Hearing those words spoken by Rāghava, the eminent sage addressed Rāma: 'Listen, O lover of righteousness.'
अद्य वर्षसहस्रस्य समाप्तिस्तपसो मम । सो ऽहं भोजनमिच्छामि यथासिद्धं तवानघ ।। ७.१०५.
Today marks the completion of a thousand years of my austerity. Therefore, O sinless one, I desire food prepared as you have it.
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं राजा राघवः प्रीतमानसः । भोजनं मुनिमुख्याय यथासिद्धमुपाहरत् ।। ७.१०५.
Hearing that request, King Rāghava, with a delighted mind, brought food prepared as it was to the foremost sage.
स तु भुक्त्वा मुनिश्रेष्ठस्तदन्नममृतोपमम् । साधु रामेति सम्भाष्य स्वमाश्रममुपागमत् ।। ७.१०५.
Having eaten that food, which was like nectar, the best of sages, addressing him, said, 'Well done, Rāma,' and returned to his own hermitage.
तस्मिन् गते मुनिवरे स्वाश्रमं लक्ष्मणाग्रजः । संस्मृत्य कालवाक्यानि ततो दुःखमुपागमत् ।। ७.१०५.
When the eminent sage had departed to his hermitage, Lakṣmaṇa’s elder brother, recalling the words of Time, was overcome by sorrow.
