Indeed, whoever sees or hears the dialogue between the sage and myself, O Saumitri, must be put to death.
Then Kakutstha placed Lakshmana at the door as a guard, and spoke to the sage: 'Speak your words.'
Whatever words you have conceived, or for whatever purpose you are intent, speak without hesitation; they also dwell in my heart.
Thus ends the three hundred and third sarga in the glorious Uttarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic, composed by the sage Valmiki.
Hear, O king of great virtue, the purpose for which I have come; I have been sent by the mighty god Pitamaha.
In your previous existence, O conqueror of enemy cities, I was your son, O hero, conceived through illusion, I am Time, the gatherer of all.
The blessed Pitamaha, lord and master of the worlds, spoke: 'Your agreement was made, gentle one, to protect the worlds.'
Long ago, you compressed the worlds by your own illusion and, lying in the great ocean, you first created me in the waters.
Then, having created Ananta, the serpent who dwells in the waters, endowed with enjoyment, by illusion you also produced two mighty beings.
Madhu and Kaitabha, whose bones formed heaps, and this earth, crowded with mountains, became the land.
In the divine lotus, radiant as the sun, you produced me from your navel; all the creative work was entrusted to me by you.
Having laid down my burden, I worship you, the lord of the world; please establish protection among beings, for you are the source of my power.
Therefore, from that eternal state, you became Vishnu for the purpose of protecting all beings, being unconquerable.
A mighty son was born to Aditi, an increaser of his brothers' strength; when tasks arise among them, you are fit to aid them.
Therefore, when the people were being terrified, O best of the worlds, you set your mind among men, desiring the destruction of Rāvaṇa.
For ten thousand years and a further thousand years, you yourself observed the vow of residence in former times.
Thus, your mind-born son, with a full lifespan, has now appeared among men; this is the time, O best of men, for you to draw near.
If, O great king, you wish again to serve the people, then remain, O hero, blessed one—thus spoke the Grandfather.
Or if you desire to conquer the world of the gods, O Rāghava, let the gods, now protected by Viṣṇu, be free from distress.
Hearing these words spoken by the Grandfather, uttered by Time, Rāghava, smiling, addressed the destroyer of all.
Hearing this most wondrous speech of the god of gods, great joy has arisen in me because of your arrival.
My descent took place for the sake of the tasks of the three worlds; may it be well with you—I shall go to whence I came.
For you have come here in person—there is no hesitation in me; in all tasks of the gods, who are under my control, I must act as the Grandfather has said, O destroyer of all.
Thus ends the one hundred and fourth sarga of the glorious Uttarakāṇḍa in the ancient poem, the holy Rāmāyaṇa composed by Vālmīki.
As they were conversing thus, the venerable sage Durvāsas, desiring to see Rāma, approached the royal gate.
Having come near, the foremost of sages spoke to Saumitri: 'Show me Rāma quickly, before my purpose is lost.'
Hearing the sage's words, Lakṣmaṇa, destroyer of enemy heroes, respectfully greeted the great-souled one and spoke these words.
'Tell me, venerable one, what is your business? What purpose shall I fulfill? Rāghava is occupied, O brāhmaṇa; please wait a moment.'
Hearing this, the tiger among sages, his mind clouded by anger, spoke to Lakṣmaṇa, his gaze as if burning.
'O Saumitri, announce me to Rāma this very moment; if you do not announce me this very moment, O Saumitri—'
