Lakṣmaṇa dwelled for a year in Aṅgada’s territory, and when his valiant son was established, he returned again to Ayodhyā.
In the same way, Bharata also stayed for more than a year, and after returning to Ayodhyā, he attended upon Rāma’s feet.
Both Saumitra and Bharata, devoted to Rāma’s feet, out of affection did not notice the passage of time, being supremely righteous.
Thus, ten thousand years passed for them, always striving in righteousness and in the affairs of the citizens.
Having spent the full measure of time, their minds fulfilled, adorned with prosperity, and firmly established in the city of righteousness, the three shone with blazing brilliance, like three sacrificial fires well kindled and properly offered in a great sacrifice.
Thus ends the one hundred and second sarga of the glorious Uttarakāṇḍa in the venerable Rāmāyaṇa, the first poem, composed by Vālmīki.
Then, after some time, while Rāma was established in righteousness, Time himself, taking the form of an ascetic, approached the royal gate.
He spoke to Lakṣmaṇa, steadfast and renowned, saying: ‘Announce to Rāma that I have come, for I bear a matter of great importance.’
I am the messenger of the mighty sage Atibala, whose energy is boundless; I have come to see Rāma, O mighty one, on an important matter.
Hearing these words, Saumitra, filled with urgency, informed Rāma that the ascetic had arrived.
‘May you, Rāma, conquer both worlds through righteousness, O greatly illustrious one! I, radiant with ascetic power, have come as a messenger to see you.’
Hearing these words spoken by Lakṣmaṇa, Rāma said: ‘Let the sage, mighty in energy and steadfast in his vow, be admitted, dear one.’
Saumitra, saying ‘So be it,’ admitted the sage, who was blazing with his own radiance, as if burning with his rays.
Approaching the best of the Raghus, his own brilliance shining forth, the sage addressed Rāghava with sweet words, saying, ‘May you flourish!’
To him, Rāma of great splendor offered worship, beginning with arghya, and began to inquire after his welfare without distraction.
Having been asked about his well-being by Rama, the foremost among speakers, the illustrious sage sat down upon a splendid golden seat.
Then Rama spoke to him: 'Welcome, great sage! Please deliver the words for which you have come here as a messenger.'
Prompted by the lion-like king, the sage spoke: 'This dialogue must be spoken, if you desire what is beneficial.'
Anyone who hears or observes this will become subject to death by you, if you wish to heed the words of the foremost sage.
Rama, having pledged thus, said to Lakshmana: 'Stand at the door, mighty-armed one, and dismiss the attendants.'
Indeed, whoever sees or hears the dialogue between the sage and myself, O Saumitri, must be put to death.
Then Kakutstha placed Lakshmana at the door as a guard, and spoke to the sage: 'Speak your words.'
Whatever words you have conceived, or for whatever purpose you are intent, speak without hesitation; they also dwell in my heart.
Thus ends the three hundred and third sarga in the glorious Uttarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic, composed by the sage Valmiki.
Hear, O king of great virtue, the purpose for which I have come; I have been sent by the mighty god Pitamaha.
In your previous existence, O conqueror of enemy cities, I was your son, O hero, conceived through illusion, I am Time, the gatherer of all.
The blessed Pitamaha, lord and master of the worlds, spoke: 'Your agreement was made, gentle one, to protect the worlds.'
Long ago, you compressed the worlds by your own illusion and, lying in the great ocean, you first created me in the waters.
Then, having created Ananta, the serpent who dwells in the waters, endowed with enjoyment, by illusion you also produced two mighty beings.
Madhu and Kaitabha, whose bones formed heaps, and this earth, crowded with mountains, became the land.
