Those cities were filled with heaps of wealth and jewels, adorned with forests, and made splendid by the rivalry and display of virtues among their inhabitants.
Both cities, shining with great beauty, were free from wrongdoing in their dealings, full of gardens and vehicles, and with well-divided marketplaces.
Both delightful and excellent cities were adorned with spaciousness, with splendid chief houses resembling celestial palaces.
They were beautified by magnificent temples, and further adorned with palm, tamala, tilaka, and bakula trees.
After establishing them over five years, Bharata, the mighty-armed son of Kekayi and younger brother of Raghava, returned again to Ayodhya.
That illustrious Bharata, having greeted the great-souled Raghava—like Indra greeting Brahma, or as one greets Dharma in person—
He reported in detail the excellent slaying of the Gandharvas and the settlement of the land; hearing this, Raghava was pleased.
Thus ends the one hundred and first sarga in the glorious Uttarakanda of the ancient and revered Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
Hearing this, Raghava rejoiced together with his brothers, and then spoke these wondrous words to Lakshmana.
O son of Sumitra, these two princes of yours, Angada and Chandraketu, are skilled in righteousness and firm in valor for the sake of the kingdom.
I shall consecrate these two in the kingdom; let a suitable land be arranged, one delightful and unconfined, where these bowmen may dwell.
Let there be no hardship for the king there, nor destruction for the hermitages; let such a land be found, O gentle one, so that we do not err.
When Rama had spoken thus, Bharata replied: 'Here is the region of Karupatha, delightful and free from affliction.'
Let a city be established there for the great-souled Angada, and for Chandraketu, a splendid, moon-bright, and healthy city.
Raghava accepted the words spoken by Bharata, and, having brought the land under control, settled it for Angada.
The beautiful city of Angada was thus established by Rama, the doer of effortless deeds, delightful and well-protected.
And for Chandraketu, son of Malla, a city was established in Mallabhumi, renowned as Chandrakanta, divine like the city of the gods.
Then Rāma, along with Lakṣmaṇa and Bharata, who were invincible in battle, experienced supreme joy and performed the consecration.
Having consecrated the princes, Rāghava sent Aṅgada to the western land and Candraketu towards the north.
Saumitra, that is Lakṣmaṇa, accompanied Aṅgada, and Bharata became the guardian and supporter of Candraketu.
Lakṣmaṇa dwelled for a year in Aṅgada’s territory, and when his valiant son was established, he returned again to Ayodhyā.
In the same way, Bharata also stayed for more than a year, and after returning to Ayodhyā, he attended upon Rāma’s feet.
Both Saumitra and Bharata, devoted to Rāma’s feet, out of affection did not notice the passage of time, being supremely righteous.
Thus, ten thousand years passed for them, always striving in righteousness and in the affairs of the citizens.
Having spent the full measure of time, their minds fulfilled, adorned with prosperity, and firmly established in the city of righteousness, the three shone with blazing brilliance, like three sacrificial fires well kindled and properly offered in a great sacrifice.
Thus ends the one hundred and second sarga of the glorious Uttarakāṇḍa in the venerable Rāmāyaṇa, the first poem, composed by Vālmīki.
Then, after some time, while Rāma was established in righteousness, Time himself, taking the form of an ascetic, approached the royal gate.
He spoke to Lakṣmaṇa, steadfast and renowned, saying: ‘Announce to Rāma that I have come, for I bear a matter of great importance.’
I am the messenger of the mighty sage Atibala, whose energy is boundless; I have come to see Rāma, O mighty one, on an important matter.
Hearing these words, Saumitra, filled with urgency, informed Rāma that the ascetic had arrived.
