निवेश्य ते पुरवरे आत्मजौ सन्निवेश्य च । आगमिष्यति मे भूयः सकाशमतिधार्मिकः ।। ७.१००.
"Having established your sons in those excellent cities, the supremely righteous Bharata will return again to me."
ब्रह्मर्षिमेवमुक्त्वा तु भरतं सबलानुगम् । आज्ञापयामास तदा कुमारौ चाभ्यषेचयत् ।। ७.१००.
After addressing the sage among the Brahmins in this way, he then instructed Bharata, who was accompanied by his army, and at that time anointed the two princes.
नक्षत्रेण च सौम्येन पुरस्कृत्याङ्गिरस्सुतम् । भरतः सह सैन्येन कुमाराभ्यां विनिर्ययौ ।। ७.१००.
With an auspicious star presiding, and having the son of Angiras lead the way, Bharata set out with his army together with the two princes.
सा सेना शक्रयुक्तेव नगरान्निर्ययावथ । राघवानुगता दूरं दुराधर्षा सुरैरपि ।। ७.१००.
That army, like one yoked by Indra himself, departed from the city, following the Raghavas for a great distance, invincible even to the gods.
मांसादानि च सत्त्वानि रक्षांसि सुमहान्ति च । अनुजग्मुर्हि भरतं रुधिरस्य पिपासया ।। ७.१००.
Carnivorous beings and mighty demons also followed Bharata, driven by a thirst for blood.
भूतग्रामाश्च बहवो मांसभक्षाः सुदारुणाः । गन्धर्वपुत्रमांसानि भोक्तुकामाः सहस्रशः ।। ७.१००.
Many hosts of flesh-eating, terrifying spirits, desiring to consume the flesh of the Gandharva prince, followed by the thousands.
सिंहव्याघ्रवराहाणां खेचराणां च पक्षिणाम् । बहूनि वै सहस्राणि सेनाया ययुरग्रतः ।। ७.१००.
Thousands upon thousands of lions, tigers, boars, and birds that dwell in the sky went ahead of the army.
अध्यर्धमासमुषिता पथि सेना निरामया । हृष्टपुष्टजनाकीर्णा केकयं समुपागमत् ।। ७.१००.
After staying on the road for more than half a month, the army, free from illness and filled with joyful and robust people, reached Kekaya.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे शततमः सर्गः
Thus ends the hundredth sarga in the glorious Uttarakanda of the ancient and revered Ramayana composed by the sage Valmiki.
श्रुत्वा सेनापतिं प्राप्तं भरतं केकयाधिपः । युधाजिद्गार्ग्यसहितं परां प्रीतिमुपागमत् ।। ७.१०१.
Hearing that the commander Bharata had arrived, the king of Kekaya, together with Yudhajit of the Gargya line, experienced great joy.
स निर्ययौ जनौघेन महता केकयाधिपः । त्वरमाणो ऽभिचक्राम गन्धर्वान्कामरूपिणः ।। ७.१०१.
The king of Kekaya set out with a great multitude of people, hastening to confront the Gandharvas who could assume any form at will.
भरतश्च युधाजिच्च समेतौ लघुविक्रमैः । गन्धर्वनगरं प्राप्तौ सबलौ सपदानुगौ ।। ७.१०१.
Bharata and Yudhajit, both swift in action, arrived at the city of the Gandharvas, accompanied by their armies and attendants.
श्रुत्वा तु भरतं प्राप्तं गन्धर्वास्ते समागताः । योद्धुकामा महावीर्या व्यनदन् वै समन्ततः ।। ७.१०१.
When the Gandharvas heard that Bharata had arrived, they gathered together, eager for battle, mighty in valor, and roared on all sides.
ततः समभवद्युद्धं तुमुलं रोमहर्षणम् । सप्तरात्रं महाभीमं न चान्यतरयोर्जयः ।। ७.१०१.
Then there arose a tumultuous and hair-raising battle, dreadful for seven nights, with victory belonging to neither side.
खड्गशक्तिधनुर्ग्राहा नद्यः शोणितसंस्रवाः । नृकलेवरवाहिन्यः प्रवृत्ताः सर्वतोदिशम् ।। ७.१०१.
Swords, spears, and bows were wielded, and rivers of blood flowed, carrying the bodies of men in all directions.
ततो रामानुजः क्रुद्धः कालस्यास्त्रं सुदारुणम् । संवर्तं नाम भरतो गन्धर्वेष्वभ्यचोदयत् ।। ७.१०१.
Then Bharata, the younger brother of Rama, enraged, unleashed upon the Gandharvas the terrible weapon of Time, called Samvarta.
ते बद्धाः कालपाशेन संवर्तेन विदारिताः । क्षणेनाभिहतास्तेन तिस्रः कोट्यो महात्मनाम् ।। ७.१०१.
Bound by the noose of Time and torn apart by the Samvarta weapon, in a moment three crores of mighty Gandharvas were struck down.
तं घातं घोरसङ्काशं न स्मरन्ति दिवौकसः । निमेषान्तरमात्रेण तादृशानां महात्मनाम् ।। ७.१०१.
Such a dreadful slaughter of such great beings, accomplished in the blink of an eye, is not remembered even by the dwellers of heaven.
हतेषु तेषु सर्वेषु भरतः केकयीसुतः । निवेशयामास तदा समृद्धे द्वे पुरोत्तमे ।। ७.१०१.
When all those Gandharvas had been slain, Bharata, son of Kekayi, then established settlements in those two prosperous and foremost cities.

Taksha was settled in Takshashila, and Pushkala in Pushkalavati, in the beautiful land of the Gandharvas and in the region of Gandhara.
धनरत्नौघसङ्कीर्णे काननैरुपशोभिते । अन्योन्यसङ्घर्षकृते स्पर्धया गुणविस्तरैः ।। ७.१०१.
Those cities were filled with heaps of wealth and jewels, adorned with forests, and made splendid by the rivalry and display of virtues among their inhabitants.
उभे सुरुचिरप्रख्ये व्यवहारैरकिल्बिषैः । उद्यानयानसम्पूर्णे सुविभक्तान्तरापणे ।। ७.१०१.
Both cities, shining with great beauty, were free from wrongdoing in their dealings, full of gardens and vehicles, and with well-divided marketplaces.
उभे पुरवरे रम्ये विस्तरैरुपशोभिते । गृहमुख्यैः सुरुचिरैर्विमानसमवर्णिभिः ।। ७.१०१.
Both delightful and excellent cities were adorned with spaciousness, with splendid chief houses resembling celestial palaces.
शोभिते शोभनीयैश्च देवायतनविस्तरैः । तालैस्तमालैस्तिलकैर्वकुलैरुपशोभिते ।। ७.१०१.
They were beautified by magnificent temples, and further adorned with palm, tamala, tilaka, and bakula trees.
निवेश्य पञ्चभिर्वर्षैर्भरतो राघवानुजः । पुनरायान्महाबाहुरयोध्यां केकयीसुतः ।। ७.१०१.
After establishing them over five years, Bharata, the mighty-armed son of Kekayi and younger brother of Raghava, returned again to Ayodhya.
सो ऽभिवाद्य महात्मानं साक्षाद्धर्ममिवापरम् । राघवं भरतः श्रीमान्ब्रह्माणमिव वासवः ।। ७.१०१.
That illustrious Bharata, having greeted the great-souled Raghava—like Indra greeting Brahma, or as one greets Dharma in person—
शशंस च यथावृत्तं गन्धर्ववधमुत्तमम् । निवेशनं च देशस्य श्रुत्वा प्रीतो ऽस्य राघवः ।। ७.१०१.
He reported in detail the excellent slaying of the Gandharvas and the settlement of the land; hearing this, Raghava was pleased.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे एकोत्तरशततमः सर्गः
Thus ends the one hundred and first sarga in the glorious Uttarakanda of the ancient and revered Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
तच्छ्रुत्वा हर्षमापेदे राघवो भ्रातृभिः सह । वाक्यं चाद्भुतसङ्काशं तदा प्रोवाच लक्ष्मणम् ।। ७.१०२.
Hearing this, Raghava rejoiced together with his brothers, and then spoke these wondrous words to Lakshmana.
इमौ कुमारौ सौमित्रे तव धर्मविशारदौ । अङ्गदश्चन्द्रकेतुश्च राज्यार्थे दृढविक्रमौ ।। ७.१०२.
O son of Sumitra, these two princes of yours, Angada and Chandraketu, are skilled in righteousness and firm in valor for the sake of the kingdom.
