While that wondrous sacrifice was underway, the eminent sage Vālmīki swiftly arrived with his disciples.
Seeing the sacrifice, radiant and marvelous to behold, he made splendid huts for the sages in a secluded spot.
He placed many carts, filled with beautiful fruits and roots, near the charming hermitage of Vālmīki, not far away.
Vālmīki, of immense brilliance and supreme spirit, was honored by the king and by the great sages, and dwelt there.
He spoke to his two confident disciples: 'Go forth with concentration and sing the entire poem of the Rāmāyaṇa with utmost joy.'
In the sacred hermitages, in the dwellings of the Brahmins, on the streets, on the royal roads, and in the houses of the rulers,
At the entrance to Rāma's palace, wherever people are engaged in work, and especially before the officiating priests, it should be sung.
And here are fruits, sweet and of various kinds, grown on the mountain peaks; enjoy them as you sing.
You will not feel fatigue, my children, after eating the fruits and well-washed roots; you will leave the city refreshed.
If Rāma, the king, calls for you to recite for his hearing, then let the singing begin before the assembled sages.
Twenty sargas should be sung each day with sweet voices, following the many measures I have previously prescribed.
One should not give in to greed, not even a little, out of desire for wealth; for what use is wealth to those dwelling in the hermitage, who live on fruits and roots?
If the descendant of Kakutstha asks you, 'Whose sons are you, children?', then reply to the king, 'We are disciples of Vālmīki.'
With these sweet-sounding lutes, in a place never seen before, after tuning them well, sing sweetly and without anxiety.
The song should be sung from the beginning, and do not show disrespect to the king; for by righteousness, the king is the father of all beings.
Therefore, with joyful hearts, tomorrow morning, take your places and sing the melodious song, accompanied by the rhythm of the lute.
Having thus instructed them many times, the sage, the son of Prachetas, Vālmīki, of great generosity and renowned fame, sat in silence.
Thus instructed by the sage, those two sons of Maithilī said, 'So shall we do,' and departed, destroyers of foes.
Then, the two princes placed those wondrous words spoken by the sage in their hearts; eager, they passed the night together, like the Aśvins with the collection of Bhārgava's precepts.
Thus ends the ninety-third sarga in the glorious Uttarakāṇḍa of the ancient and revered Rāmāyaṇa, composed by the sage Vālmīki.
At dawn, after bathing and offering oblations into the sacred fire, the two sang everything there just as the sage had previously instructed.
The descendant of Kakutstha listened to that song, composed by ancient teachers, a new style of recitation, adorned with melody.
Bound by many measures, accompanied by the rhythm of the lute, Rāghava, hearing it sung by the two boys, became filled with curiosity.
Then, during another task, the king summoned the great sages, the tiger among men, as well as the kings, scholars, and also the merchants.
He called the reciters of ancient tales, those skilled in language, the elderly twice-born, and the foremost Brāhmaṇas who know the characteristics of musical notes, all eager to listen.
He especially summoned those skilled in the characteristics of music, the experts in the art of Gandharvas, the merchants, those who know the arrangement of syllables and feet, and those accomplished in metres.
He called those who know the distinctions of time and measure, those advanced in astrology, those skilled in ritual procedures, and those knowledgeable in various duties.
He summoned those who know languages and gestures, all the merchants, those skilled in reasoning and application, and those adept in logical discourse.
He called the experts in metres, the knowers of ancient lore, the foremost twice-born versed in the Vedas, those skilled in painting, in the rules of poetic composition, and those accomplished in singing and dance.
He gathered together all those who were learned in the scriptures, skilled in policy, and awakened to the meaning of Vedānta, and had the two singers seated among them.
