Hearing Puru’s words, Nahusha, filled with great joy, experienced incomparable delight and transferred that old age to him.
Then that king, having regained youth, performed thousands of sacrifices and ruled the earth for many thousands of years.
After a long time, the king spoke to Puru: 'Bring back old age, my son, and return the trust to me.'
'My son, old age was entrusted by me and transferred to you; therefore, I will now accept it back—do not be troubled.'
'And I am pleased, mighty-armed one, by your acceptance of my command; with affection I will anoint you as king of men.'
Having thus spoken to his son Puru, Yayati, son of Nahusha, angrily addressed the son of Devayani.
'You are a fierce rakshasa, though born as my son; since you have opposed my command for the sake of the people, be fruitless.'
'Because you have disrespected me, your father and teacher, you will give rise to cruel rakshasas and yatudhanas.'
'But in the line born of Soma, your wickedness will not remain; even your lineage will become unruly, like yourself.'
Having thus spoken, the royal sage honored Puru, the enhancer of the kingdom, with the consecration and entered the hermitage.
After a long time, the king Yayati, son of Nahusha, reached his destined end and ascended to heaven.
Puru, endowed with great righteousness, ruled that kingdom with fame in the splendid city of Pratishthana, in the realm of Kashi.
But Yadu gave birth to thousands of yatudhanas in the city, in the Krauncha forest, in a fortress, having been cast out from the royal lineage.
Thus, freed from Ushanas’ curse by Yayati, he upheld the kshatriya duty, which Nimi could not endure.
All this has been told to you—the vision of all deeds; let us follow, gentle one, so that no fault may arise as with Nriga.
As Rāma spoke, and as the one with a face like the moon listened, the sky at that moment became sparsely dotted with stars; and the eastern quarter, tinged red by the rays of the sun, shone as if a garment, freed from the juice of flowers, had been spread out unwrinkled.
Thus ends the fifty-ninth sarga in the glorious Uttarakāṇḍa of the venerable Rāmāyaṇa, the first poem composed by Vālmīki.
As Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa conversed in this way, the spring night arrived—neither cold nor oppressive with heat.
Then, at dawn, when the morning was clear, Kākutstha, having performed his early rituals, proceeded to attend to the affairs of the citizens.
At that time, Sumantra approached and spoke to Rāghava: 'O King, ascetics are standing at the gate, their entry delayed.'
Led by Bhārgava Cyavana, the great sages, eager and delighted, dwellers on the banks of the Yamunā, urge for an audience with you, O great king.
Hearing these words, Rāma, knower of dharma, said: 'Let the illustrious Brāhmaṇas, with Bhārgava at their head, be admitted.'
With the king’s command, the doorkeeper, palms joined on his head, ushered in those ascetics—difficult to approach.
There entered the royal palace more than a hundred ascetics of great soul, shining with their own radiance.
Those Brāhmaṇas, carrying full water pots filled with water from all sacred fords, and bearing fruits and roots, brought many offerings to Rāma.
Rāma, filled with joy, graciously accepted all the sacred waters and the various fruits.
The mighty-armed Rāma then addressed all the great sages: 'Here are the chief seats—please be seated as is fitting.'
Hearing Rāma’s words, all the great sages sat down upon the beautiful golden seats called bṛsīs.
Seeing those sages seated there, the conqueror of enemy cities, Rāghava, with joined palms and self-restraint, spoke these words:
'For what purpose have you come? What shall I do with full attention? I am to be commanded by the great sages, able to fulfill every wish for your comfort.'
