एवमुक्त्वा दुहितरं समाश्वास्य च भार्गवः । पुनर्जगाम ब्रह्मर्षिर्भवनं स्वं महायशाः ।। ७.५८.
Having thus spoken and consoled his daughter, the illustrious Brāhmaṇa sage Bhārgava returned again to his own abode.
स एवमुक्त्वा द्विजपुङ्गवाग्र्यः सुतां समाश्वास्य च देवयानीम् । पुनर्ययौ सूर्यसमानतेजा दत्त्वा च शापं नहुषात्मजाय ।। ७.५८.
Thus having spoken, the foremost of twice-born sages, radiant as the sun, comforted his daughter Devayānī and, after cursing the son of Nahuṣa, departed.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे ऽष्टपञ्चाशः सर्गः
Thus ends the fifty-eighth sarga in the glorious Uttarakāṇḍa of the ancient and revered Rāmāyaṇa composed by Vālmīki.
श्रुत्वा तूशनसं क्रुद्धं तदा ऽ ऽर्तो नहुषात्मजः । जरां परमिकां प्राप्य यदुं वचनमब्रवीत् ।। ७.५९.
Hearing Uśanas enraged, the son of Nahuṣa, afflicted, having been overtaken by extreme old age, spoke to Yadu these words.
यदो त्वमसि धर्मज्ञो मदर्थं प्रतिगृह्यताम् । जरां परमिकां पुत्र भोगै रंस्ये महायशः ।। ७.५९.
O Yadu, you are righteous; for my sake, accept this extreme old age, my son of great fame, so that I may enjoy pleasures.
न तावत्कृतकृत्यो ऽस्मि विषयेषु नरर्षभ । अनुभूय तदा कामं ततः प्राप्स्याम्यहं जराम् ।। ७.५९.
I have not yet fulfilled my desires among pleasures, O best of men; after experiencing my wishes, then I shall accept old age.
यदुस्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रत्युवाच नरर्षभम् । पुत्रस्ते दयितः पूरुः प्रतिगृह्णातु वै जराम् ।। ७.५९.
Hearing those words, Yadu replied to the best of men, 'Let your beloved son Pūru accept old age.'
बहिष्कृतो ऽहमर्थेषु सन्निकर्षाच्च पार्थिव । प्रतिगृह्णातु वै राजन् क सहाश्नाति भोजनम् ।। ७.५९.
O King, having been cast out from affairs and from close association, who would accept food from me, and who would eat with me?
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राजा पूरुमथाब्रवीत् । इयं जरा महाबाहो मदर्थं प्रतिगृह्यताम् ।। ७.५९.
Hearing these words, the king spoke to Puru: 'Mighty-armed one, let this old age be accepted by you for my sake.'
नाहुषेणैवमुक्तस्तु पूरुः प्राञ्जलिरब्रवीत् । धन्यो ऽस्म्यनुगृहीतो ऽस्मि शासने ऽस्मि तव स्थितः ।। ७.५९.
Thus addressed by Nahusha, Puru, with joined palms, said: 'I am blessed, I am favored, I stand under your command.'
पूरोर्वचनमाज्ञाय नाहुषः परया मुदा । प्रहर्षमतुलं लेभे जरां सङ्क्रामयच्च ताम् ।। ७.५९.
Hearing Puru’s words, Nahusha, filled with great joy, experienced incomparable delight and transferred that old age to him.
ततः स राजा तरुणः प्राप्य यज्ञान्सहस्रशः । बहुवर्षसहस्राणि पालयामास मेदिनीम् ।। ७.५९.
Then that king, having regained youth, performed thousands of sacrifices and ruled the earth for many thousands of years.
अथ दीर्घस्य कालस्य राजा पूरुमथाब्रवीत् । आनयस्व जरां पुत्र न्यासं निर्यातयस्व मे ।। ७.५९.
After a long time, the king spoke to Puru: 'Bring back old age, my son, and return the trust to me.'
न्यासभूता मया पुत्र त्वयि सङ्क्रामिता जरा । तस्मात्प्रतिग्रहीष्यामि तां जरां मा व्यथां कृथाः ।। ७.५९.
'My son, old age was entrusted by me and transferred to you; therefore, I will now accept it back—do not be troubled.'
प्रीतश्चास्मि महाबाहो शासनस्य प्रतिग्रहात् । त्वां चाहमभिषेक्ष्यामि प्रीतियुक्तो नराधिपम् ।। ७.५९.
'And I am pleased, mighty-armed one, by your acceptance of my command; with affection I will anoint you as king of men.'
एवमुक्त्वा सुतं पूरुं ययातिर्नहुषात्मजः । देवयानीसुतं क्रुद्धो राजा वाक्यमुवाच ह ।। ७.५९.
Having thus spoken to his son Puru, Yayati, son of Nahusha, angrily addressed the son of Devayani.
राक्षसस्त्वं मया जातः पुत्ररूपो दुरासदः । प्रतिहंसि ममाज्ञां यत् प्रजार्थे विफलो भव ।। ७.५९.
'You are a fierce rakshasa, though born as my son; since you have opposed my command for the sake of the people, be fruitless.'
पितरं गुरुभूतं मां यस्मात्त्वमवमन्यसे । राक्षसान्यातुधानांस्त्वं जनयिष्यसि दारुणान् ।। ७.५९.
'Because you have disrespected me, your father and teacher, you will give rise to cruel rakshasas and yatudhanas.'
न तु सोमकुलोत्पन्ने वंशे स्थास्यति दुर्मतेः । वंशो ऽपि भवतस्तुल्यो दुर्विनीतो भविष्यति ।। ७.५९.
'But in the line born of Soma, your wickedness will not remain; even your lineage will become unruly, like yourself.'
तमेवमुक्त्वा राजर्षिः पूरुं राज्यविवर्धनम् । अभिषेकेण सम्पूज्य आश्रमं प्रविवेश ह ।। ७.५९.
Having thus spoken, the royal sage honored Puru, the enhancer of the kingdom, with the consecration and entered the hermitage.
ततः कालेन महता दिष्टान्तमुपजग्मिवान् । त्रिदिवं सङ्गतो राजा ययातिर्नहुषात्मजः ।। ७.५९.
After a long time, the king Yayati, son of Nahusha, reached his destined end and ascended to heaven.
पूरुश्चकार तद्राज्यं धर्मेण महता वृतः । प्रतिष्ठाने पुरवरे काशिराज्ये महायशाः ।। ७.५९.
Puru, endowed with great righteousness, ruled that kingdom with fame in the splendid city of Pratishthana, in the realm of Kashi.
यदुस्तु जनयामास यातुधानान्सहस्रशः । पुरे क्रौञ्चवने दुर्गे राजवंशबहिष्कृतः ।। ७.५९.
But Yadu gave birth to thousands of yatudhanas in the city, in the Krauncha forest, in a fortress, having been cast out from the royal lineage.
एष तूशनसा मुक्तः शापोत्सर्गो ययातिना । धारितः क्षत्रधर्मेण यन्निमिश्च न चक्षमे ।। ७.५९.
Thus, freed from Ushanas’ curse by Yayati, he upheld the kshatriya duty, which Nimi could not endure.
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं दर्शनं सर्वकारिणाम् । अनुवर्तामहे सौम्य दोषो न स्याद्यथा नृगे ।। ७.५९.
All this has been told to you—the vision of all deeds; let us follow, gentle one, so that no fault may arise as with Nriga.
इति कथयति रामे चन्द्रतुल्यानने च प्रविरलतरतारं व्योम जज्ञे तदानीम् । अरुणकिरणरक्ता दिग्बभौ चैव पूर्वा कुसुमरसविमुक्तं वस्त्रमाकुण्ठितेव ।। ७.५९.
As Rāma spoke, and as the one with a face like the moon listened, the sky at that moment became sparsely dotted with stars; and the eastern quarter, tinged red by the rays of the sun, shone as if a garment, freed from the juice of flowers, had been spread out unwrinkled.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे एकोनषष्टितमः सर्गः
Thus ends the fifty-ninth sarga in the glorious Uttarakāṇḍa of the venerable Rāmāyaṇa, the first poem composed by Vālmīki.
तयोः संवदतोरेवं रामलक्ष्मणयोस्तदा । वासन्तिकी निशा प्राप्ता न शीता न च घर्मदा ।। ७.६०.
As Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa conversed in this way, the spring night arrived—neither cold nor oppressive with heat.
ततः प्रभाते विमले कृतपौर्वाह्णिकक्रियः । अभिचक्राम काकुत्स्थो दर्शनं पौरकार्यवित् ।। ७.६०.
Then, at dawn, when the morning was clear, Kākutstha, having performed his early rituals, proceeded to attend to the affairs of the citizens.
ततः सुमन्त्रस्त्वागम्य राघवं वाक्यमब्रवीत् । एते प्रतिहता राजन्द्वारि तिष्ठन्ति तापसाः ।। ७.६०.
At that time, Sumantra approached and spoke to Rāghava: 'O King, ascetics are standing at the gate, their entry delayed.'
