अर्जुनो विदधे मृत्युं प्राकृतां बुद्धिमास्थितः। वधमप्रतिरूपं तु पितुः श्रुत्वा सुदारुणम्। क्षत्रमुत्सादयं रोषाज्जातं जातमनेकशः
Arjuna, adopting ordinary intelligence, caused death; hearing of his father's cruel and improper killing, he repeatedly destroyed the warrior class in anger.
पृथिवीं चाखिलां प्राप्य कश्यपाय महात्मने। यज्ञस्यान्तेऽददं राम दक्षिणां पुण्यकर्मणे
Having gained the entire earth, I gave it as a sacrificial gift to the great-souled Kaśyapa at the end of the sacrifice, O Rāma, as a reward for virtuous deeds.
दत्त्वा महेन्द्रनिलयस्तपोबलसमन्वितः। श्रुत्वा तु धनुषो भेदं ततोऽहं द्रुतमागतः
Having given it, I dwelt at Mahendra, endowed with ascetic power; but upon hearing of the breaking of the bow, I came here swiftly.
तदेवं वैष्णवं राम पितृपैतामहं महत्। क्षत्रधर्मं पुरस्कृत्य गृह्णीष्व धनुरुत्तमम्
Thus, O Rāma, this great bow of Viṣṇu has come down from father and grandfather; honoring the warrior's duty, take up this excellent bow.
योजयस्व धनुःश्रेष्ठे शरं परपुरंजयम्। यदि शक्तोऽसि काकुत्स्थ द्वन्द्वं दास्यामि ते ततः
Fit the conquering arrow to the best of bows; if you are able, O descendant of Kakutstha, then I will grant you a duel.

Let the seventy-sixth chapter be heard. In the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Bāla Kāṇḍa, this is the seventy-sixth chapter.
श्रुत्वा तु जामदग्न्यस्य वाक्यं दाशरथिस्तदा। गौरवाद्यन्त्रितकथः पितू राममथाब्रवीत्
Then, having heard the words of Jāmadagnya, the son of Daśaratha, constrained by respect, spoke to his father and then to Rāma.
कृतवानसि यत् कर्म श्रुतवानस्मि भार्गव। अनुरुध्यामहे ब्रह्मन् पितुरानृण्यमास्थितः
I have heard of the deeds you have performed, O Bhārgava; we honor you, O Brahman, for you have fulfilled your father's debt.
वीर्यहीनमिवाशक्तं क्षत्रधर्मेण भार्गव। अवजानासि मे तेजः पश्य मेऽद्य पराक्रमम्
You regard me as powerless, lacking in valor and unable to uphold the warrior's duty, O Bhārgava; behold my prowess today.
इत्युक्त्वा राघवः क्रुद्धो भार्गवस्य वरायुधम्। शरं च प्रतिजग्राह हस्ताल्लघुपराक्रमः
Having spoken thus, Rāghava, angered, took the mighty weapon of Bhārgava and the arrow from his hand, swift in valor.
आरोप्य स धनू रामः शरं सज्यं चकार ह। जामदग्न्यं ततो रामं रामः क्रुद्धोऽब्रवीदिदम्
Rāma fitted the bow and made the arrow ready; then, angered, Rāma spoke these words to Jāmadagnya.
ब्राह्मणोऽसीति पूज्यो मे विश्वामित्रकृतेन च। तस्माच्छक्तो न ते राम मोक्तुं प्राणहरं शरम्
You are a Brāhmaṇa and worthy of my reverence, as is Viśvāmitra; therefore, O Rāma, I am not able to release the arrow that takes life against you.
इमां वा त्वद्गतिं राम तपोबलसमर्जितान्। लोकानप्रतिमान् वापि हनिष्यामीति मे मतिः
Either I will destroy this path of yours, O Rāma, or I will strike down the worlds, unrivaled, which have been won by the power of asceticism—this is my resolve.
न ह्ययं वैष्णवो दिव्यः शरः परपुरंजयः। मोघः पतति वीर्येण बलदर्पविनाशनः
For this divine, Viṣṇu's arrow, O conqueror of enemy cities, does not fall in vain; by its power, it destroys the arrogance of strength.
वरायुधधरं रामं द्रष्टुं सर्षिगणाः सुराः। पितामहं पुरस्कृत्य समेतास्तत्र सर्वशः
To see Rāma, bearer of the supreme weapon, all the gods along with the hosts of sages, with the Grandsire at their head, assembled there completely.
गन्धर्वाप्सरसश्चैव सिद्धचारणकिन्नराः। यक्षराक्षसनागाश्च तद् द्रष्टुं महदद्भुतम्
Gandharvas, Apsarases, Siddhas, Cāraṇas, Kinnaras, Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, and Nāgas also gathered to witness that great and wondrous event.
जडीकृते तदा लोके रामे वरधनुर्धरे। निर्वीर्यो जामदग्न्योऽसौ रामो राममुदैक्षत
When the world was thus rendered motionless, with Rāma holding the supreme bow, Jāmadagnya became powerless and gazed at Rāma with joy.
तेजोभिर्गतवीर्यत्वाज्जामदग्न्यो जडीकृतः। रामं कमलपत्राक्षं मन्दं मन्दमुवाच ह
Deprived of his vigor by Rāma's radiance, Jāmadagnya was rendered inert and slowly, gently spoke to Rāma, whose eyes are like lotus petals.
काश्यपाय मया दत्ता यदा पूर्वं वसुंधरा। विषये मे न वस्तव्यमिति मां काश्यपोऽब्रवीत्
Long ago, I gave the earth to Kāśyapa; Kāśyapa told me that I must not dwell within my own domain.
सोऽहं गुरुवचः कुर्वन् पृथिव्यां न वसे निशाम्। तदाप्रभृति काकुत्स्थ कृता मे काश्यपस्य ह
Therefore, obeying my teacher's command, I do not dwell on earth at night; from that time, O descendant of Kakutstha, I have kept Kāśyapa's word.
तामिमां मद्गतिं वीर हन्तुं नार्हसि राघव। मनोजवं गमिष्यामि महेन्द्रं पर्वतोत्तमम्
O hero, do not destroy this path of mine, O Rāghava; I will go, swift as thought, to Mahendra, the greatest of mountains.
लोकास्त्वप्रतिमा राम निर्जितास्तपसा मया। जहि ताञ्छरमुख्येन मा भूत् कालस्य पर्ययः
O Rāma, the worlds, unrivaled, have been conquered by me through asceticism; strike them with your foremost arrow, so that the time of destruction does not arrive.
अक्षय्यं मधुहन्तारं जानामि त्वां सुरेश्वरम्। धनुषोऽस्य परामर्शात् स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु परंतप
I know you to be the undying slayer of Madhu, the lord of gods; by your mere touch of this bow, may all be well with you, O scorcher of foes.
एते सुरगणाः सर्वे निरीक्षन्ते समागताः। त्वामप्रतिमकर्माणमप्रतिद्वन्द्वमाहवे
All these hosts of gods have assembled and are watching you, whose deeds are unmatched, who has no equal in battle.
न चेयं मम काकुत्स्थ व्रीडा भवितुमर्हति। त्वया त्रैलोक्यनाथेन यदहं विमुखीकृतः
Nor should this, O descendant of Kakutstha, be a cause of shame for me—that I have been turned away by you, the lord of the three worlds.
शरमप्रतिमं राम मोक्तुमर्हसि सुव्रत। शरमोक्षे गमिष्यामि महेन्द्रं पर्वतोत्तमम्
O Rāma, you of firm vows, you should release the peerless arrow; after you release the arrow, I will go to Mahendra, the greatest of mountains.
तथा ब्रुवति रामे तु जामदग्न्ये प्रतापवान्। रामो दाशरथिः श्रीमांश्चिक्षेप शरमुत्तमम्
When the mighty Jāmadagnya had spoken thus to Rāma, Rāma, son of Daśaratha, glorious, released the supreme arrow.
स हतान् दृश्य रामेण स्वाँल्लोकांस्तपसार्जितान्। जामदग्न्यो जगामाशु महेन्द्रं पर्वतोत्तमम्
Seeing his own worlds, won by asceticism, struck down by Rāma, Jāmadagnya swiftly went to Mahendra, the greatest of mountains.
ततो वितिमिराः सर्वा दिशश्चोपदिशस्तथा। सुराः सर्षिगणा रामं प्रशशंसुरुदायुधम्
Then all directions and intermediate quarters became clear; the gods and hosts of sages praised Rāma, wielder of the mighty bow.
रामं दाशरथिं रामो जामदग्न्यः प्रपूजितः। ततः प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य जगामात्मगतिं प्रभुः
Rāma, son of Daśaratha, was honored by Rāma, son of Jamadagni; then, having circumambulated him, the lord departed on his own path.
