एवमुक्त्वा ददौ तेभ्यो भूषणानि यथार्हतः । वज्राणि च महार्हाणि सस्वजे च नरर्षभः ।। ७.३९.
Having spoken thus, he gave them ornaments according to their worth, and priceless jewels; the best of men embraced them as well.
ते पिबन्तः सुगन्धीनि मधूनि मधुपिङ्गलाः । मांसानि च सुमृष्टानि मूलानि च फलानि च ।। ७.३९.
Those tawny monkeys drank fragrant honey, ate well-prepared meats, roots, and fruits.
एवं तेषां निवसतां मासः साग्रो ययौ तदा । मुहूर्तमिव ते सर्वे रामभक्त्या च मेनिरे ।। ७.३९.
Thus, as they dwelt there, a month and more passed by; but to all of them, devoted to Rāma, it seemed but a moment.
रामो ऽपि रेमे तैः सार्धं वानरैः कामरूपिभिः । राक्षसैश्च महावीर्यैर्ऋक्षैश्चैव महाबलैः ।। ७.३९.
Rāma too delighted in the company of the monkeys who could assume any form, the mighty rākṣasas, and the powerful bears.
एवं तेषां ययौ मासो द्वितीयः शिशिरः सुखम् । वानराणां प्रहृष्टानां राक्षसानां च सर्वशः ।। ७.३९.
So passed a second, pleasant winter month for the joyful monkeys and all the rākṣasas.
इक्ष्वाकुनगरे रम्ये परां प्रीतिमुपासताम् । रामस्य प्रीतिकरणैः कालस्तेषां सुखं ययौ ।। ७.३९.
In the beautiful city of the Ikṣvāku dynasty, as they enjoyed supreme happiness with Rāma's acts of kindness, their time passed in comfort.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे एकोनचत्वारिंशः सर्गः
Thus ends the thirty-ninth sarga of the glorious Uttarakāṇḍa in the ancient and illustrious Rāmāyaṇa composed by Vālmīki.
तथा स्म तेषां वसतामृक्षवानररक्षसाम् । राघवस्तु महातेजाः सुग्रीवमिदमब्रवीत् ।। ७.४०.
As the bears, monkeys, and rākṣasas were living there, the radiant Rāghava spoke these words to Sugrīva.
गम्यतां सौम्य किष्किन्धां दुराधर्षां सुरासुरैः । पालयस्व सहामात्यो राज्यं निहतकण्टकम् ।। ७.४०.
'Go now, gentle one, to Kiṣkindhā, unconquerable by gods and asuras; rule the kingdom with your ministers, now that all threats are destroyed.'
अङ्गदं च महाबाहो प्रीत्या परमया युतः । पश्य त्वं हनुमन्तं च नलं च सुमहाबलम् ।। ७.४०.
'With the utmost affection, look after Aṅgada, mighty-armed, as well as Hanumān and Nala, who possess great strength.'
सुषेणं श्वशुरं वीरं तारं च बलिनां वरम् । कुमुदं चैव दुर्धर्षं नीलं चैव महाबलम् ।। ७.४०.
'Care for Suṣeṇa, your valiant father-in-law, Tāra, foremost among the strong, Kumuda, who is hard to overcome, and Nīla, of great might.'
वीरं शतवलिं चैव मैन्दं द्विविदमेव च । गजं गवाक्षं गवयं शरभं च महाबलम् । पश्य प्रीतिसमायुक्तो गन्धमादनमेव च ।। ७.४०.
See the valiant Śatavali, as well as Mainda and Dvivida; Gaja, Gavākṣa, Gavaya, and the mighty Śarabha; and Gandhamādana, filled with joy.
ऋषभं च सुविक्रान्तं जाम्बवन्तं महाबलम् । ये चेमे सुमहात्मानो मदर्थे त्यक्तजीविताः ।। ७.४०.
See also the heroic Ṛṣabha and the powerful Jāmbavān, and all these great souls who have given up their lives for my sake.
पश्य त्वं प्रीतिसंयुक्तो मा चैषां विप्रियं कृथाः ।। ७.४०.
Look upon them with affection, and do not do anything displeasing to them.
एवमुक्त्वा तु सुग्रीवमाश्लिष्य च पुनः पुनः । विभीषणमुवाचाथ रामो मधुरया गिरा ।। ७.४०.
Having spoken thus, he embraced Sugrīva again and again, and then Rāma addressed Vibhīṣaṇa with gentle words.
लङ्कां प्रशाधि धर्मेण धर्मज्ञस्त्वं मतो मम । पुरस्य राक्षसानां च स्वभ्रातुस्सम्मतो ह्यसि ।। ७.४०.
Rule over Laṅkā with righteousness; I consider you to be knowledgeable in dharma. You are esteemed by the city’s Rākṣasas and by your own brother.
मा च बुद्धिमधर्मे त्वं कुर्या राजन्कथञ्चन । बुद्धिमन्तो हि राजानो ध्रुवमश्नन्ति मेदिनीम् ।। ७.४०.
O King, never let your mind turn to unrighteousness in any way; for kings who are wise surely enjoy the earth.
अहं च नित्यशो राजन्सुग्रीवसहितस्त्वया । स्मर्तव्यः परया प्रीत्या गच्छ त्वं विगतज्वरः ।। ७.४०.
And, O King, you must always remember me with utmost affection, together with Sugrīva; go now, free from anxiety.
रामस्य भाषितं श्रुत्वा ऋक्षवानरराक्षसाः । साधुसाध्विति काकुत्स्थं प्रशशंसुः पुनः पुनः ।। ७.४०.
Hearing Rāma’s words, the bears, monkeys, and Rākṣasas praised Kakutstha again and again, saying, 'Excellent! Excellent!'
तव बुद्धिर्महाबाहो वीर्यमद्भुतमेव च । माधुर्यं परमं राम स्वयम्भोरिव नित्यदा ।। ७.४०.
Your wisdom, mighty-armed one, and your wondrous strength, and your supreme sweetness, O Rāma, are ever like those of the self-born Lord.
तेषामेवं ब्रुवाणानां वानराणां च राक्षसाम् । हनूमान्प्रवणः भूत्वा राघवं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।। ७.४०.
As the monkeys and Rākṣasas spoke thus, Hanumān, bowing low, addressed Rāghava with these words:
स्नेहो मे परमो राजंस्त्वयि तिष्ठतु नित्यदा । भक्तिश्च नियता वीर भावो नान्यत्र गच्छतु ।। ७.४०.
O King, may my supreme affection for you remain always; and, O hero, may my unwavering devotion and feeling never go elsewhere.
वायद्रामकथा वीर चरिष्यति महीतले । तावच्छरीरे वत्स्यन्ति प्राणा मम न संशयः ।। ७.४०.
O hero, as long as the stories of Rāma circulate upon the earth, so long will my life remain in my body—of this there is no doubt.
यच्चैतच्चरितं दिव्यं कथा ते रघुनन्दन । तन्मयाप्सरसो नाम श्रावयेयुर्नरर्षभ ।। ७.४०.
O delight of the Raghu line, as for this divine story of your deeds, let the Apsarases recite it, O bull among men.
तच्छ्रुत्वाहं ततो वीर तव चर्यामृतं प्रभो । उत्कण्ठां तां हरिष्यामि मेघलेखामिवानिलः ।। ७.४०.
Hearing then, O hero, the nectar of your deeds, O Lord, I will dispel that longing, just as the wind drives away a streak of cloud.
एवं ब्रुवाणं रामस्तु हनूमन्तं वरासनात् । उत्थाय सस्वजे स्नेहाद्वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ।। ७.४०.
As Hanumān was speaking thus, Rāma rose from his excellent seat, embraced him out of affection, and spoke these words:
एवमेतत्कपिश्रेष्ठ भविता नात्र संशयः । चरिष्यति कथा यावदेषा लोके च मामिका । तावत्ते भविता कीर्तिः शरीरे ऽप्यसवस्तथा ।। ७.४०.
So it shall be, O best of monkeys, without doubt; as long as this story of mine is told in the world, so long will your fame and your life remain.
लोका हि यावत्स्थास्यन्ति तावत्स्थास्यति मे कथा ।। ७.४०.
For as long as the worlds endure, so long will my story endure.
लोके च मामिका । एकैकस्योपकारस्य प्राणान्दास्यामि ते कपे । नरः प्रत्युपकाराणामापस्त्वायाति पात्रताम् ।। ७.४०.
And in this world, for each act of service, O monkey, I will give you my life; a man who repays favors becomes worthy of receiving them.
ततो ऽस्य हारं चन्द्राभं मुच्य कण्ठात्स राघवः । वैडूर्यतरलं कण्ठे बबन्ध च हनूमतः ।। ७.४०.
Then Rāghava removed from his neck a necklace shining like the moon, and fastened around Hanuman's neck a strand adorned with beryl gems.
