रामस्य बाहुवीर्येण रक्षिता लक्ष्मणस्य च । सुखं पारेसमुद्रस्य युध्येम विगतज्वराः ।। ७.३९.
'Protected by the mighty arms of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, we could fight across the ocean without anxiety.'
एताश्चान्याश्च राजानः कथास्तत्र सहस्रशः । कथयन्तः स्वराज्यानि जग्मुर्हर्षसमन्विताः ।। ७.३९.
Those kings and many others, telling stories by the thousands, returned to their own realms, filled with delight.
स्वानि राज्यानि मुख्यानि ऋद्धानि मुदितानि च । समृद्धधनधान्यानि पूर्णानि वसुमन्ति च ।। ७.३९.
Their principal kingdoms were prosperous, joyful, abundant in wealth and grain, full and rich in treasures.
यथापुराणि ते गत्वा रत्नानि विविधान्यथ । रामस्य प्रियकामार्थमुपहारान् नृपा ददुः ।। ७.३९.
Having returned to their ancient realms, the kings offered various gems as gifts to please Rāma.
अश्वान्यानानि रत्नानि हस्तिनश्च मदोत्कटान् । चन्दनानि च मुख्यानि दिव्यान्याभरणानि च ।। ७.३९.
They gave horses, vehicles, gems, elephants in rut, fine sandalwood, and divine ornaments.
मणिमुक्ताप्रवालांस्तु दास्यो रूपसमन्विताः । अजाविकांश्च विविधान् रथांस्तु विविधान्ददुः ।। ७.३९.
They presented jewels, pearls, coral, beautiful maidservants, various livestock, and many kinds of chariots.
भरतो लक्ष्मणश्चैव शत्रुघ्नश्च महाबलाः । आदाय तानि रत्नानि स्वां पुरीं पुनरागताः ।। ७.३९.
Bharata, Lakṣmaṇa, and the mighty Śatrughna, taking those gems, returned again to their own city.
आगम्य च पुरीं रम्यामयोध्यां पुरुषर्षभाः । तानि रत्नानि चित्राणि रामाय समुपाहरन् ।। ७.३९.
Arriving at the delightful city of Ayodhyā, those foremost men brought the splendid gems to Rāma.
प्रतिगृह्य च तत्सर्वं रामः प्रीतिसमन्वितः । सुग्रीवाय ददौ राज्ञे महात्मा कृतकर्मणे ।। ७.३९.
Rāma, pleased, accepted all those gifts and gave them to Sugrīva, the noble king who had accomplished his task.
बिभीषणाय च ददौ तथान्येभ्यो ऽपि राघवः । राक्षसेभ्यः कपिभ्यश्च यैर्वृतो जयमाप्तवान् ।। ७.३९.
Rāghava also gave gifts to Bibhīṣaṇa and to others—the rākṣasas and the monkeys—who had helped him achieve victory.
ते सर्वे रामदत्तानि रत्नानि कपिराक्षसाः । शिरोभिर्धारयामासुर्बाहुभिश्च महाबलाः ।। ७.३९.
All the monkeys and rākṣasas, mighty in strength, bore the gems given by Rāma upon their heads and arms.
हनूमन्तं च नृपतिरिक्ष्वाकूणां महारथः । अङ्गदं च महाबाहुमङ्कमारोप्य वीर्यवान् ।। ७.३९.
The great charioteer among Ikṣvāku kings, Hanumān, and the mighty-armed Aṅgada, were seated on his lap by the valorous one.
रामः कमलपत्राक्षः सुग्रीवमिदमब्रवीत् । अङ्गदस्ते सुपुत्रो ऽयं मन्त्री चाप्यनिलात्मजः ।। ७.३९.
Rāma, lotus-eyed, spoke to Sugrīva: 'Aṅgada is your excellent son, and the wind-born Hanumān is your counselor.'
सुग्रीवमन्त्रिते युक्तौ मम चापि हिते रतौ । अर्हतो विविधां पूजां त्वत्कृते वै हरीश्वर ।। ७.३९.
Sugrīva, who is wise in counsel and devoted to my welfare, deserves every kind of honor for your sake, O lord of the monkeys.
इत्युक्त्वा व्यवमुच्याङ्गाद्भूषणानि महायशाः । स बबन्ध महार्हाणि तदाङ्गदहनूमतोः ।। ७.३९.
Having spoken thus, the illustrious one removed ornaments from his own body and then adorned Aṅgada and Hanumān with precious jewels.
आभाष्य च महावीर्यान्राघवो यूथपर्षभान् । नीलं नलं केसरिणं कुमुदं गन्धमादनम् ।। ७.३९.
Rāghava addressed the mighty chiefs of the monkey troops—Nīla, Nala, Kesari, Kumuda, and Gandhamādana.
सुषेणं पनसं वीरं मैन्दं द्विविदमेव च । जाम्बवन्तं गवाक्षं च विनतं धूम्रमेव च ।। ७.३९.
He also spoke to Suṣeṇa, the valiant Panasa, Mainda and Dvivida, Jāmbavān, Gavākṣa, Vinata, and Dhūmra.
वलीमुखं प्रजङ्घं च सन्नादं च महाबलम् । दरीमुखं दधिमुखमिन्द्रजानुं च यूथपम् ।। ७.३९.
He addressed Valīmukha, Prajaṅgha, the mighty Sannāda, Darīmukha, Dadhimukha, and Indrajānu, the leader of the troops.
मधुरं श्लक्ष्णया वाचा नेत्राभ्यामापिबन्निव । सुहृदो मे भवन्तश्च शरीरं भ्रातरस्तथा ।। ७.३९.
With sweet and gentle words, as if drinking them in with his eyes, he said, 'You are my friends, and my brothers in body as well.'
युष्माभिरुद्धृतश्चाहं व्यसनात्काननौकसः । धन्यो राजा च सुग्रीवो भवद्भिः सुहृदां वरैः ।। ७.३९.
'It is by you, dwellers of the forest, that I have been rescued from calamity. Fortunate is King Sugrīva to have you, the best of friends.'
एवमुक्त्वा ददौ तेभ्यो भूषणानि यथार्हतः । वज्राणि च महार्हाणि सस्वजे च नरर्षभः ।। ७.३९.
Having spoken thus, he gave them ornaments according to their worth, and priceless jewels; the best of men embraced them as well.
ते पिबन्तः सुगन्धीनि मधूनि मधुपिङ्गलाः । मांसानि च सुमृष्टानि मूलानि च फलानि च ।। ७.३९.
Those tawny monkeys drank fragrant honey, ate well-prepared meats, roots, and fruits.
एवं तेषां निवसतां मासः साग्रो ययौ तदा । मुहूर्तमिव ते सर्वे रामभक्त्या च मेनिरे ।। ७.३९.
Thus, as they dwelt there, a month and more passed by; but to all of them, devoted to Rāma, it seemed but a moment.
रामो ऽपि रेमे तैः सार्धं वानरैः कामरूपिभिः । राक्षसैश्च महावीर्यैर्ऋक्षैश्चैव महाबलैः ।। ७.३९.
Rāma too delighted in the company of the monkeys who could assume any form, the mighty rākṣasas, and the powerful bears.
एवं तेषां ययौ मासो द्वितीयः शिशिरः सुखम् । वानराणां प्रहृष्टानां राक्षसानां च सर्वशः ।। ७.३९.
So passed a second, pleasant winter month for the joyful monkeys and all the rākṣasas.
इक्ष्वाकुनगरे रम्ये परां प्रीतिमुपासताम् । रामस्य प्रीतिकरणैः कालस्तेषां सुखं ययौ ।। ७.३९.
In the beautiful city of the Ikṣvāku dynasty, as they enjoyed supreme happiness with Rāma's acts of kindness, their time passed in comfort.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे एकोनचत्वारिंशः सर्गः
Thus ends the thirty-ninth sarga of the glorious Uttarakāṇḍa in the ancient and illustrious Rāmāyaṇa composed by Vālmīki.
तथा स्म तेषां वसतामृक्षवानररक्षसाम् । राघवस्तु महातेजाः सुग्रीवमिदमब्रवीत् ।। ७.४०.
As the bears, monkeys, and rākṣasas were living there, the radiant Rāghava spoke these words to Sugrīva.
गम्यतां सौम्य किष्किन्धां दुराधर्षां सुरासुरैः । पालयस्व सहामात्यो राज्यं निहतकण्टकम् ।। ७.४०.
'Go now, gentle one, to Kiṣkindhā, unconquerable by gods and asuras; rule the kingdom with your ministers, now that all threats are destroyed.'
अङ्गदं च महाबाहो प्रीत्या परमया युतः । पश्य त्वं हनुमन्तं च नलं च सुमहाबलम् ।। ७.४०.
'With the utmost affection, look after Aṅgada, mighty-armed, as well as Hanumān and Nala, who possess great strength.'
