गदेयं मामिका नैनं संयुगेषु वधिष्यति । इत्येवं वरदः प्राह तदा ह्येकाक्षिपिङ्गलः ।। ७.३६.
This mace of mine will not kill him in battle—thus spoke the boon-giver, the one-eyed, tawny-eyed one.
मत्तो मदायुधानां च न वध्यो ऽयं भविष्यति । इत्येवं शङ्करेणापि दत्तो ऽस्य परमो वरः ।। ७.३६.
He will not be slain by any of my weapons of intoxication—thus, even Śaṅkara granted him a supreme boon.
सर्वेषां ब्रह्मदण्डानामवध्यो ऽयं भविष्यति । दीर्घायुश्च महात्मा च इति ब्रह्माब्रवीद्वचः ।। ७.३६.
He will be invulnerable to all the rods of Brahmā, and will have long life and great soul—so spoke Brahmā.
विश्वकर्मा च दृष्ट्वैनं बालसूर्योपमं शिशुम् । शिल्पिनां प्रवरः प्रादाद्वरमस्य महामतिः ।। ७.३६.
And Viśvakarmā, seeing him as a child radiant like the rising sun, the foremost among craftsmen, granted him a boon with great wisdom.
मत्कृतानि च शस्त्राणि यानि दिव्यानि संयुगे । तैरवध्यत्वमापन्नश्चिरजीवी भविष्यति ।। ७.३६.
All the divine weapons made by me for battle—by them he will be invulnerable and will live long.
ततः सुराणां तु वरैर्दृष्ट्वा ह्येनमलङ्कृतम् । चतुर्मुखस्तुष्टमना वायुमाह जगद्गुरुः ।। ७.३६.
Then, seeing him adorned with the boons of the gods, the four-faced preceptor of the world, with a pleased mind, spoke to Vāyu.
अमित्राणां भयकरो मित्राणामभयङ्करः । अजेयो भविता पुत्रस्तव मारुत मारुतिः ।। ७.३६.
He will be a terror to enemies and a bringer of safety to friends; your son, O Wind, the son of Māruta, will be invincible.
कामरूपः कामचारी कामगः प्लवतां वरः । भवत्यव्याहतगतिः कीर्तिमांश्च भविष्यति ।। ७.३६.
He will be able to assume any form at will, move as he wishes, go wherever he desires, and will be the foremost among those who leap; his movement will be unhindered and he will be renowned.
रावणोत्सादनार्थानि रामप्रियकरणि च । रोमहर्षकराण्येष कर्ता कर्माणि संयुगे ।। ७.३६.
He will perform deeds in battle for the destruction of Rāvaṇa and to please Rāma, deeds that cause one's hair to stand on end.
एवमुक्त्वा तमामन्त्र्य मारुतं त्वमरैः सह । यथागतं ययुः सर्वे पितामहपुरोगमाः ।। ७.३६.
Having spoken thus and taking leave of Vāyu together with the gods, all of them, led by the grandsire, departed as they had come.
सो ऽपि गन्धवहः पुत्रं प्रगृह्य गृहमानयत् । अञ्जनायास्तमाचख्यौ वरदत्तं विनिर्गतः ।। ७.३६.
Then the Wind-god, taking his son, brought him home and told Añjanā about the boons that had been granted.
प्राप्य राम वरानेष वरदानसमन्वितः । बलेनात्मनि संस्थेन सो ऽपूर्यत यथा ऽर्णवः ।। ७.३६.
Having received these boons from Rāma, endowed with the gifts of the boon-givers, he was filled with strength within himself, like the ocean.
तरसा पूर्यमाणो ऽपि तदा वानरपुङ्गवः । आश्रमेषु महर्षीणामपराध्यति निर्भयः ।। ७.३६.
Even as he was being filled with power, that foremost of monkeys, fearless, committed offenses in the hermitages of the great sages.
स्रुग्भाण्डान्यग्निहोत्रं च वल्कलाजिनसञ्चयान् । भग्नविच्छिन्नविध्वस्तान्संशान्तानां करोत्ययम् ।। ७.३६.
He would break and scatter their ladles, vessels, fire-altars, and heaps of bark and skins, leaving them ruined and destroyed.
एवंविधानि कर्माणि प्रावर्तत महाबलः । सर्वेषां ब्रह्मदण्डानामवध्यः शम्भुना कृतः ।। ७.३६.
Thus did the mighty one begin to perform such deeds, being made invulnerable to all the rods of Brahmā by Śambhu.
जानन्त ऋषयस्तं वै सहन्ते तस्य शक्तितः ।। ७.३६.
The sages, knowing him, endure him according to their ability.
यथा केसरिणा त्वेष वायुना सो ऽञ्जनासुतः । प्रतिषिद्धो ऽपि मर्यादां लङ्घयत्येव वानरः ।। ७.३६.
Just as the son of Anjana, though restrained by the lion-like wind, still transgresses the boundary, so does the monkey.
ततो महर्षयः क्रुद्धा भृग्वङ्गिरसवंशजाः । शेपुरेनं रघुश्रेष्ठ नातिक्रुद्धातिमन्यवः ।। ७.३६.
Then the great sages, descended from the Bhṛgu and Aṅgiras lineages, became angry and cursed him, O best of Raghu’s line, though not excessively enraged.
बाधसे यत्समाश्रित्य बलमस्मान्प्लवङ्गम । तद्दीर्घकालं वेत्तासि नास्माकं शापमोहितः । यदा ते स्मार्यते कीर्तिस्तदा ते वर्धते बलम् ।। ७.३६.
Because you trouble us, relying on your strength, O monkey, you will, for a long time, be unaware of your power, deluded by our curse; whenever your fame is recalled, then your strength will increase.
ततस्स हृततेजौजा महर्षिवचनौजसा । एषोश्रमाणि तान्येव मृदुभावं गतो ऽचरत् ।। ७.३६.
Then, deprived of his energy and vigor by the words of the great sages, he adopted a gentle demeanor and performed those tasks.
अथर्क्षरजसो नाम वालिसुग्रीवयोः पिता । सर्ववानरराजा ऽ ऽसीत्तेजसा भास्करप्रभः ।। ७.३६.
Now, there was a king named Ṛkṣaraja, father of Vāli and Sugrīva, ruler of all the monkeys, radiant in splendor like the sun.
स तु राज्यं चिरं कृत्वा वानराणां हरीश्वरः । स च ऋक्षरजा नाम कालधर्मेण सङ्गतः ।। ७.३६.
Having ruled the monkeys for a long time, that lord of the monkeys, Ṛkṣaraja by name, departed according to the law of time.
तस्मिन्नस्तमिते चाथ मन्त्रिभिर्मन्त्रकोविदैः । पित्र्ये पदे कृतो वाली सुग्रीवो वालिनः पदे ।। ७.३६.
After his passing, the ministers skilled in counsel installed Vāli in the paternal position, and Sugrīva in Vāli’s place.
सुग्रीवेण समं त्वस्य अद्वैधं छिद्रवर्जितम् । आबाल्यं सख्यमभवदनिलस्याग्निना यथा ।। ७.३६.
Between Sugrīva and him, there was undivided, flawless friendship from childhood, like that of the wind and fire.
एष शापवशादेव न वेद बलमात्मनः । वालिसुग्रीवयोर्वैरं यदा राम समुत्थितम् ।। ७.३६.
Due to the power of the curse, he does not know his own strength, when enmity arose between Vāli and Sugrīva, O Rāma.
न ह्येष राम सुग्रीवो भ्राम्यमाणो ऽपि वालिना ।। ७.३६.
Nor, O Rāma, does Sugrīva, though tossed about by Vāli, know his own strength.
देव जानाति न ह्येष बलमात्मनि मारुतिः । ऋषिशापाहृतबलस्तदैष कपिसत्तमः ।। ७.३६.
O Deva, he does not know his own power, this son of the wind; deprived of strength by the sages’ curse, he is the foremost among monkeys.
सिंहः कुञ्जररुद्धो वा आस्थितः सहितो रणे ।। ७.३६.
A lion, though restrained by an elephant, stands firm and endures in battle.
पराक्रमोत्साहमतिप्रतापसौशील्यमाधुर्यनयानयैश्च । गाम्भीर्यचातुर्यसुवीर्यधैर्यैर्हनूमतः को ऽभ्यधिको ऽस्ति लोके ।। ७.३६.
Who in the world surpasses Hanuman in valor, enthusiasm, extraordinary brilliance, noble character, sweetness, conduct, depth, cleverness, heroism, and courage?
असौ पुनर्व्याकरणं ग्रहीष्यन्सूर्योन्मुखः प्रष्टुमना कपीन्द्रः । उद्यद्गिरेरस्तगिरिं जगाम ग्रन्थं महद्धारयनप्रमेयः ।। ७.३६.
He, again, intending to master grammar, facing the sun, the monkey king, went to the rising mountain, bearing the great treatise, immeasurable.
