अद्यैव च परित्यक्तं वायुना जगदायुषा । अद्यैव ते निरुच्छ्वासाः काष्ठकुड्योपमाः स्थिताः ।। ७.३५.
Today, the breath of life has left the world; today, you stand without breath, like wooden walls.
तद्यामस्तत्र यत्रास्ते मारुतो रुक्प्रदो हि नः । मा विनाशं गमिष्याम अप्रसाद्यादितेः सुताः ।। ७.३५.
Let us go to where the wind resides, for he brings us pain; let us not perish without pleasing Aditi’s sons.
ततः प्रजाभिः सहितः प्रजापतिः सदेवगन्धर्वभुजङ्गगुह्यकैः । जगाम तत्रास्यति यत्र मारुतः सुतं सुरेन्द्राभिहतं प्रगृह्य सः ।। ७.३५.
Then, Prajāpati, together with the people, with gods, Gandharvas, serpents, and Guhyakas, went to where the wind was, holding his son struck down by the lord of gods.
ततो ऽर्कवैश्वानरकाञ्चनप्रभं सुतं तदोत्सङ्गगतं सदागतेः । चतुर्मुखो वीक्ष्य कृपामथाकरोत्सदेवगन्धर्वर्षियक्षराक्षसैः ।। ७.३५.
There, seeing the son radiant like the sun, fire, and gold, lying in the lap of his ever-present father, the four-faced one felt compassion, along with gods, Gandharvas, sages, Yakṣas, and Rākṣasas.
ततः पितामहं दृष्ट्वा वायुः पुत्रवधार्दितः । शिशुकं तं समादाय उत्तस्थौ धातुरग्रतः ।। ७.३६.
Then, seeing the grandfather, the wind, afflicted by his son’s death, took up the child and rose before the creator.
चलकुण्डलमौलिस्रक्तपनीयविभूषणः । पादयोर्न्यपतद्वायुस्तिस्रोपस्थाय वेधसे ।। ७.३६.
Adorned with moving earrings, a garland, and water-jewels, the wind approached the creator and fell at his feet three times.
तं तु वेदविदा तेन लम्बाभरणशोभिना । वायुमुत्थाप्य हस्तेन शिशुं तं परिमृष्टवान् ।। ७.३६.
The knower of the Vedas, shining with hanging ornaments, raised the wind with his hand and gently touched the child.
स्पृष्टमात्रस्ततः सो ऽथ सलीलं पद्मयोनिना । जलसिक्तं यथा सस्यं पुनर्जीवितमाप्तवान् ।। ७.३६.
Touched by the lotus-born one, the child, as if sprinkled with water, regained life, just as a plant does.
प्राणवन्तमिमं दृष्ट्वा प्राणो गन्धवहो मुदा । चचार सर्वभूतेषु सन्निरुद्धं यथा पुरा ।। ७.३६.
Seeing this one alive, the fragrant wind, with joy, moved among all beings as before, no longer restrained.
मरुद्रोधाद्विनिर्मुक्तास्ताः प्रजा मुदिता ऽभवन् । शीतदाहविनिर्मुक्ताः पद्मिन्य इव साम्बुजाः ।। ७.३६.
Freed from the restraint of the wind, the creatures became joyful, released from cold and heat, like lotuses with their buds.
ततस्त्रियुग्मस्त्रिककुत्ऺित्रधामा त्रिदशार्चितः । उवाच देवता ब्रह्मा मारुतप्रियकाम्यया ।। ७.३६.
Then, Brahmā, honored by the gods, radiant with three peaks and three pairs, spoke to the deities, desiring to please the wind.
भो महेन्द्रेशवरुणप्रजेश्वरधनेश्वराः । जानतामपि वः सर्वं वक्ष्यामि श्रूयतां हितम् ।। ७.३६.
O Indra, Lord of Waters, Lord of People, Lord of Wealth, though you know all, I will speak; listen to what is beneficial.
अनेन शिशुना कार्यं कर्तव्यं वो भविष्यति । तद्वदध्वं वरान्सर्वे मारुतस्यास्य तुष्टये ।। ७.३६.
You will have a task to accomplish through this child; therefore, grant boons, all of you, to please the wind.
ततः सहस्रनयनः प्रीतियुक्तः शुभाननः । कुशेशयमयीं मालामुत्क्षिप्येदं वचो ऽब्रवीत् ।। ७.३६.
Then, the thousand-eyed, joyful and auspicious-faced, lifting a garland made of lotuses, spoke these words.
मत्करोत्सृष्टवज्रेण हनुरस्य यथा हतः । नाम्ना वै कपिशार्दूलो भविता हनुमानिति ।। ७.३६.
Struck by my thunderbolt, his jaw was wounded; thus, by name, he will be called Hanumān, the foremost among monkeys.
अहमस्य प्रदास्यामि परमं वरमद्भुतम् । इतः प्रभृति वज्रस्य ममावध्यो भविष्यति ।। ७.३६.
I will grant him a supreme and wondrous boon: from now on, he will not be slain by my thunderbolt.
मार्तण्डस्त्वब्रवीत्तत्र भगवांस्तिमिरापहः । तेजसो ऽस्य मदीयस्य ददामि शतिकां कलाम् ।। ७.३६.
Then the blessed sun, dispeller of darkness, said: I will give him a portion of my own radiance.
यदा तु शास्त्राण्यध्येतुं शक्तिरस्य भविष्यति । तदास्य शास्त्रं दास्यामि येन वाग्ग्मी भविष्यति ।। ७.३६.
When he has the ability to study the scriptures, then I will give him the knowledge by which he will become eloquent.
नचास्य भविता कश्चित्सदृशः शास्त्रदर्शने । वरुणश्च वरं प्रादान्नास्य मृत्युर्भविष्यति । वर्षायुतशतेनापि मत्पाशादुदकादपि ।। ७.३६.
And there will be no one equal to him in understanding the scriptures; and Varuṇa granted the boon that he would not die, not even after a hundred thousand years, neither by my noose nor by water.
यमो दण्डादवध्यत्वमरोगत्वं च नित्यशः । वरं ददामि सन्तुष्ट अविषादं च संयुगे ।। ७.३६.
Yama granted him immunity from his staff, perpetual freedom from disease, and, being pleased, I grant him freedom from despair in battle.
गदेयं मामिका नैनं संयुगेषु वधिष्यति । इत्येवं वरदः प्राह तदा ह्येकाक्षिपिङ्गलः ।। ७.३६.
This mace of mine will not kill him in battle—thus spoke the boon-giver, the one-eyed, tawny-eyed one.
मत्तो मदायुधानां च न वध्यो ऽयं भविष्यति । इत्येवं शङ्करेणापि दत्तो ऽस्य परमो वरः ।। ७.३६.
He will not be slain by any of my weapons of intoxication—thus, even Śaṅkara granted him a supreme boon.
सर्वेषां ब्रह्मदण्डानामवध्यो ऽयं भविष्यति । दीर्घायुश्च महात्मा च इति ब्रह्माब्रवीद्वचः ।। ७.३६.
He will be invulnerable to all the rods of Brahmā, and will have long life and great soul—so spoke Brahmā.
विश्वकर्मा च दृष्ट्वैनं बालसूर्योपमं शिशुम् । शिल्पिनां प्रवरः प्रादाद्वरमस्य महामतिः ।। ७.३६.
And Viśvakarmā, seeing him as a child radiant like the rising sun, the foremost among craftsmen, granted him a boon with great wisdom.
मत्कृतानि च शस्त्राणि यानि दिव्यानि संयुगे । तैरवध्यत्वमापन्नश्चिरजीवी भविष्यति ।। ७.३६.
All the divine weapons made by me for battle—by them he will be invulnerable and will live long.
ततः सुराणां तु वरैर्दृष्ट्वा ह्येनमलङ्कृतम् । चतुर्मुखस्तुष्टमना वायुमाह जगद्गुरुः ।। ७.३६.
Then, seeing him adorned with the boons of the gods, the four-faced preceptor of the world, with a pleased mind, spoke to Vāyu.
अमित्राणां भयकरो मित्राणामभयङ्करः । अजेयो भविता पुत्रस्तव मारुत मारुतिः ।। ७.३६.
He will be a terror to enemies and a bringer of safety to friends; your son, O Wind, the son of Māruta, will be invincible.
कामरूपः कामचारी कामगः प्लवतां वरः । भवत्यव्याहतगतिः कीर्तिमांश्च भविष्यति ।। ७.३६.
He will be able to assume any form at will, move as he wishes, go wherever he desires, and will be the foremost among those who leap; his movement will be unhindered and he will be renowned.
रावणोत्सादनार्थानि रामप्रियकरणि च । रोमहर्षकराण्येष कर्ता कर्माणि संयुगे ।। ७.३६.
He will perform deeds in battle for the destruction of Rāvaṇa and to please Rāma, deeds that cause one's hair to stand on end.
एवमुक्त्वा तमामन्त्र्य मारुतं त्वमरैः सह । यथागतं ययुः सर्वे पितामहपुरोगमाः ।। ७.३६.
Having spoken thus and taking leave of Vāyu together with the gods, all of them, led by the grandsire, departed as they had come.
