अतुलं बलमेतद्वै वालिनो रावणस्य च । न त्वेताभ्यां हनुमता समं त्विति मतिर्मम ।। ७.३५.
The strength of Vāli and Rāvaṇa is indeed unmatched, but in my view, neither equals Hanumān.
शौर्यं दाक्ष्यं बलं धैर्यं प्राज्ञता नयसाधनम् । विक्रमश्च प्रभावश्च हनूमति कृतालयाः ।। ७.३५.
Courage, skill, strength, steadfastness, wisdom, mastery of strategy, valor, and power—all these dwell in Hanumān.
दृष्ट्वैव सागरं वीक्ष्य सीदन्तीं कपिवाहिनीम् । समाश्वास्य महाबाहुर्योजनानां शतं प्लुतः ।। ७.३५.
Seeing the ocean and the monkey army losing heart, that mighty-armed one encouraged them and leapt a hundred yojanas.
धर्षयित्वा पुरीं लङ्कां रावणान्तःपुरं तदा । दृष्ट्वा सम्भाषिता चापि सीता ह्याश्वासिता तथा ।। ७.३५.
Having entered the city of Laṅkā, he then penetrated Rāvaṇa’s inner chambers, saw and spoke with Sītā, and comforted her as well.
सेनाग्रगा मन्त्रिसुताः किङ्करा रावणात्मजः । एते हनुमता तत्र ह्येकेन वितिपातिताः ।। ७.३५.
The army leaders, the sons of ministers, the Kiṅkaras, and Rāvaṇa’s own son—all these were struck down there by Hanumān alone.
भूयो बन्धाद्विमुक्तेन भाषयित्वा दशाननम् । लङ्का भस्मीकृता येन पावकेनेव मेदिनी ।। ७.३५.
Once more, after being freed from captivity, he spoke to the ten-headed one—he who reduced Lanka to ashes, just as fire does to the earth.
न कालस्य न शक्रस्य न विष्णोर्वित्तपस्य च । कर्माणि तानि श्रूयन्ते यानि युद्धे हनूमतः ।। ७.३५.
No deeds are heard of, whether by Time, Indra, Vishnu, or Kubera, like those Hanuman performed in battle.
एतस्य बाहुवीर्येण लङ्का सीता च लक्ष्मणः । प्राप्ता मया जयश्चैव राज्यं मित्राणि बान्धवाः ।। ७.३५.
Through his mighty arms, I gained Lanka, Sita, Lakshmana, victory, the kingdom, friends, and kinsmen.
हनूमान्यदि मे नः स्याद्वानराधिपतेः सखा । प्रवृत्तिमपि को वेत्तुं जानक्याः शक्तिमान्भवेत् ।। ७.३५.
If Hanuman, the friend of the lord of the monkeys, had not been with us, who else could have learned any news of Janaki?
किमर्थं वाल्यनेनैव सुग्रीवप्रियकाम्यया । तदा वैरे समुत्पन्ने न दग्धो वीरुधो यथा ।। ७.३५.
Why, out of childishness and the desire to please Sugriva, was he not destroyed then, when enmity arose, like a tender shoot?
नहि वेदितवान्मन्ये हनूमानात्मनो बलम् । यद्दृष्टवाञ्जीवितेष्टं क्लिश्यन्तं वानराधिपम् ।। ७.३५.
I think Hanuman did not know his own strength, when he saw the monkey king suffering, longing for life.
एतन्मे भगवन्सर्वं हनूमति महामतौ । विस्तरेण यथातत्त्वं कथयामरपूजित ।। ७.३५.
O venerable one, honored by the gods, tell me all this about the great-minded Hanuman, in detail and as it truly is.
राघवस्य वचः श्रुत्वा हेतुयुक्तमृषिस्तदा । हनूमतः समक्षं तमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ।। ७.३५.
Hearing these words of Raghava, full of reasoning, the sage then spoke these words before Hanuman.
सत्यमेतद्रघुश्रेष्ठ यद्ब्रवीषि हनूमतः । न बले विद्यते तुल्यो न गतौ न मतौ परः ।। ७.३५.
What you say about Hanuman is true, O best of the Raghus; in strength, speed, and intellect, there is no one equal or superior to him.
अमोघशापैः शप्तस्तु दत्तो ऽस्य मुनिभिः पुरा । न वेत्ता हि बलं येन बली सन्निरिमर्दनः ।। ७.३५.
He was formerly cursed by sages with unfailing curses, so that, though powerful and invincible, he would not know his own strength.
बाल्ये ऽप्येतेन यत्कर्म कृतं राम महाबल । तन्न वर्णयितुं शक्यमिति बालतया ऽ ऽस्यते ।। ७.३५.
Even in his childhood, O mighty Rama, the deeds he performed cannot be described, for they are restrained by his childishness.
यदि वा ऽस्ति त्वभिप्रायस्तच्छ्रोतुं तव राघव । समाधाय मतिं राम निशामय वदाम्यहम् ।। ७.३५.
If you have the desire to hear it, O Raghava, then compose your mind, Rama, and listen as I tell you.
सूर्यदत्तवरस्वर्णः सुमेरुर्नाम पर्वतः । यत्र राज्यं प्रशास्त्यस्य केसरी नाम वै पिता ।। ७.३५.
There is a mountain named Sumeru, shining with golden peaks given by the sun, where his father, Kesari, rules the kingdom.
तस्य भार्या बभूवैषा ह्यञ्जनेति परिश्रुता । जनयामास तस्यां वै वायुरात्मजमुत्तमम् ।। ७.३५.
His wife was renowned as Anjana, and in her, the wind-god begot an excellent son.
शालिशूकनिभाभासं प्रासूतामुं तदा ऽञ्जना । फलान्याहर्तुकामा वै निष्क्रान्ता गहनेचरा ।। ७.३५.
Then Anjana gave birth to him, whose appearance was like rice and partridge chicks; she, dwelling in the forest, went out desiring to gather fruits.
एष मातुर्वियोगाच्च क्षुधया च भृशार्दितः । रुरोद शिशुरत्यर्थं शिशुः शरवणे यथा ।। ७.३५.
Separated from his mother and tormented by hunger, the infant cried out exceedingly, like a child in a thicket.
तदोद्यन्तं विवस्वन्तं जपापुष्पोत्करोपमम् । ददर्श फललोभाच्च ह्युत्पपात रविं प्रति ।। ७.३५.
He saw the rising sun, resembling a cluster of hibiscus flowers, and, out of greed for fruit, leapt up toward the sun.
बालार्काभिमुखो बालो बालार्क इव मूर्तिमान् । ग्रहीतुकामो बालार्कं प्लवते ऽम्बरमध्यगः ।। ७.३५.
The child, facing the young sun, himself radiant like the young sun, wished to seize it and soared into the midst of the sky.
एतस्मिन्प्लवमाने तु शिशुभावे हनूमति । देवदानवयक्षाणां विस्मयः सुमहानभूत् ।। ७.३५.
As Hanuman, still a child, began to leap, there arose great astonishment among the gods, demons, and yakshas.
नाप्येवं वेगवान्वायुर्गरुडो वा मनस्तथा । यथा ऽयं वायुपुत्रस्तु क्रमते ऽम्बरमुत्तमम् ।। ७.३५.
Neither the swift wind nor Garuda, nor even the mind itself, could move as quickly through the highest sky as this son of the wind now does.
यदि तावच्छिशोरस्य त्वीदृशो गतिविक्रमः । यौवनं बलमासाद्य कथं वेगो भविष्यति ।। ७.३५.
If, as a mere child, he displays such speed and prowess, what will his force be when he attains youth and strength?
तमनुप्लवते वायुः प्लवन्तं पुत्रमात्मनः । सूर्यदाहभयाद्रक्षंस्तुषारचयशीतलः ।। ७.३५.
The Wind, following his leaping son, protected him from the burning heat of the sun with a coolness like a mass of snow.
बहुयोजनसाहस्रं क्रमत्येष गतोम्बरम् । पितुर्बलाच्च बाल्याच्च भास्कराभ्याशमागतः ।। ७.३५.
He traversed thousands of yojanas through the sky, and, by his father's power and his own childhood vigor, reached close to the sun.
शिशुरेष त्वदोषज्ञ इति मत्वा दिवाकरः । कार्यं चात्र समायत्तमित्येवं न ददाह सः ।। ७.३५.
The sun, thinking, 'This is a child ignorant of harm, and the matter rests with me,' did not burn him.
यमेव दिवसं ह्येष ग्रहीतुं भास्करं प्लुतः । तमेव दिवसं राहुर्जिघृक्षति दिवाकरम् ।। ७.३५.
On the very day that he leapt to seize the sun, Rahu also sought to grasp the sun.
