एवं बलिभ्यो बलिनः सन्ति राघवनन्दन । नावज्ञा हि परे कार्या य इच्छेत् प्रियमात्मनः ।। ७.३३.
Thus, O delight of the Raghu lineage, there are those stronger than the strong; one should not disregard others, who desire what is good for themselves.
ततः स राजा पिशिताशनानां सहस्रबाहोरुपलभ्य मैत्रीम् । पुनर्नृपाणां कदनं चकार चचार सर्वां पृथिवीं च दर्पात् ।। ७.३३.
Then that king, having made peace with Sahasrabahu, the lord of the flesh-eaters, once again waged war upon the other kings and, out of pride, roamed the entire earth.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे त्रयस्त्रिंशः सर्गः
Thus ends the thirty-third sarga in the glorious Uttarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first poem, composed by the sage Valmiki.
अर्जुनेन विमुक्तस्तु रावणो राक्षसाधिपः । चचार पृथिवीं सर्वामनिर्विण्णस्तथा कृतः ।। ७.३४.
Released by Arjuna, Ravana, the lord of the Rakshasas, wandered the whole earth, undiscouraged as before.
राक्षसं वा मनुष्यं वा शृणुते ऽयं बलाधिकम् । रावणस्तं समासाद्य युद्धे ह्वयति दर्पितः ।। ७.३४.
Whenever Ravana heard of any Rakshasa or human who was powerful, he would arrogantly challenge him to battle.
ततः कदाचित्किष्किन्धां नगरीं वालिपालिताम् । गत्वा ह्वयति युद्धाय वालिनं हेममालिनम् ।। ७.३४.
Then, once, he went to the city of Kishkindha, ruled by Vali, adorned with a golden garland, and challenged Vali to fight.
ततस्तु वानरामात्यस्तारस्तारापिता प्रभुः । उवाच वानरो वाक्यं युद्धप्रेप्सुमुपागतम् ।। ७.३४.
Then Tara, the wise Vanara minister, addressed Vali, who was eager for battle and had come forth.
राक्षसेन्द गतो वाली यस्ते प्रतिबलो भवेत् । को ऽन्यः प्रमुखतः स्थातुं तव शक्तः प्लवङ्गमः ।। ७.३४.
O king of the Rakshasas, Vali has gone forth—who else among the Vanaras could stand before you as your equal?
चतुर्भ्यो ऽपि समुद्रेभ्यः सन्ध्यामन्वास्य रावण । इमं मुहूर्तमायाति वाली तिष्ठ मुहूर्तकम् ।। ७.३४.
Ravana, after performing the evening rites at the four oceans, Vali will arrive here in this very moment—wait just a little while.
एतानस्थिचयान्पश्य य एते शङ्खपाण्डुराः । युद्धार्थिनामिमे राजन्वानराधिपतेजसा ।। ७.३४.
Behold these heaps of bones, white as conch-shells—these are from those who sought battle, destroyed by the majesty of the Vanara king.
यद्वा ऽमृतरसः पीतस्त्वया रावण राक्षस । तदा वालिनमासाद्य तदन्तं तव जीवितम् ।। ७.३४.
If, O Rakshasa Ravana, you have drunk the nectar of immortality, then only by facing Vali will your life reach its end.
पश्येदानीं जगच्चित्रमिमं विश्रवसः सुत । इदं मुहूर्तं तिष्ठस्व दुर्लभं ते भविष्यति ।। ७.३४.
Now, O son of Visravas, you will witness the wonders of the world—wait just this moment, for it will soon become unattainable to you.
अथवा त्वरसे मर्तुं गच्छ दक्षिणसागरम् । वालिनं द्रक्ष्यसे तत्र भूमिस्थमिव पावकम् ।। ७.३४.
Or, if you are in haste to die, go to the southern ocean—you will see Vali there, like fire resting upon the earth.
स तु तारं विनिर्भर्त्स्य रावणो लोकरावणः । पुष्पकं तत्समारुह्य प्रययौ दक्षिणार्णवम् ।। ७.३४.
But Ravana, the terror of the worlds, rebuking Tara, mounted the Pushpaka chariot and set out for the southern ocean.
तत्र हेमगिरिप्रख्यं तरुणार्कनिभाननम् । रावणो वालिनं दृष्ट्वा सन्ध्योपासनतत्परम् ।। ७.३४.
There, Ravana saw Vali, whose face shone like the rising sun and who resembled a mountain of gold, absorbed in his evening worship.
पुष्पकादवरुह्याथ रावणो ऽञ्जनसन्निभः । ग्रहीतुं वालिनं तूर्णं निःशब्दपदमाव्रजत् ।। ७.३४.
Then Ravana, dark as collyrium, descended from the Pushpaka and silently approached Vali, intending to seize him swiftly.
यदृच्छया तदा दृष्टो वालिनापि स रावणः । पापाभिप्रायवान् दृष्ट्वा चकार न तु सम्भ्रमम् ।। ७.३४.
By chance, Vali saw Ravana, who harbored evil intent, but upon seeing him, Vali showed no agitation.
शशमालक्ष्य सिंहो वा पन्नगं गरुडो यथा । न चिन्तयति तं वाली रावणं पापनिश्चयम् ।। ७.३४.
Just as a lion does not heed a hare, or Garuda a serpent, so Vali paid no mind to Ravana, whose purpose was wicked.
जिघृक्षमाणमायान्तं रावणं पापचेतसम् । कक्षावलम्बिनं कृत्वा गमिष्ये त्रीन्महार्णवान् ।। ७.३४.
Seeing Ravana, whose mind was set on evil, approaching to seize him, Vali thought, 'I will take him under my arm and traverse the three great oceans.'
द्रक्ष्यन्त्यरिं ममाङ्कस्थं स्रंसदूरुकराम्बरम् । लम्बमानं दशग्रीवं गरुडस्येव पन्नगम् ।। ७.३४.
They will see my enemy, held on my flank, his thigh-cloth and upper garment slipping, Ravana hanging down like a serpent in Garuda's grasp.
इत्येवं मतिमास्थाय वाली कर्णमुपाश्रितः । जपन्वै नैगमान्मन्त्रांस्तस्थौ पर्वतराडिव ।। ७.३४.
Having resolved thus in his mind, Vali, relying on his own strength, recited Vedic mantras and stood firm like a mountain peak.
तावन्योन्यं जिघृक्षन्तौ हरिराक्षसपार्थिवौ । प्रयत्नवन्तौ तत्कर्म ईहतुर्बलदर्पितौ ।। ७.३४.
Those two—the monkey and the king of the Rakshasas—each eager to seize the other, performed their deeds with great effort, both proud of their strength.
हस्तग्राहं तु तं मत्वा पादशब्देन रावणम् । पराङ्मुखो ऽपि जग्राह वाली सर्पमिवाण्डजः ।। ७.३४.
Recognizing Ravana's attempt to grapple him, Vali seized him with his foot, even while facing away, just as Garuda seizes a serpent.
ग्रहीतुकामं तं गृह्य रक्षसामीश्वरं हरिः । खमुत्पपात वेगेन कृत्वा कक्षावलम्बिनम् ।। ७.३४.
Having seized the lord of the Rakshasas, who sought to seize him, the monkey leapt swiftly into the sky, carrying Ravana hanging from his armpit.
तं चापीडयमानं तु वितुदन्तं नखैर्मुहुः । जहार रावणं वाली पवनस्तोयदं यथा ।। ७.३४.
Though Ravana struggled and struck repeatedly with his nails, Vali carried him off as the wind carries a rain-cloud.
अथ ते राक्षसामात्या ह्रियमाणं दशाननम् । मुमोक्षयिषवो वालिं रवमाणा अभिद्रुताः ।। ७.३४.
Then the Rakshasa ministers, hearing Ravana's cries as he was being carried away, rushed forward, eager to free him from Vali.
अन्वीयमानस्तैर्वाली भ्राजते ऽम्बरमध्यगः । अन्वीयमानो मेघौघैरम्बरस्थ इवांशुमान् ।। ७.३४.
Pursued by them, Vali shone in the midst of the sky, as the sun shines among clouds that chase him.
ते ऽशक्नुवन्तः सम्प्राप्तुं वालिनं राक्षसोत्तमाः । तस्य बाहूरुवेगेन परिश्रान्ता व्यवस्थिताः ।। ७.३४.
Those foremost Rakshasas, unable to reach Vali, became exhausted by the force of his arms and thighs, and stopped in their pursuit.
वालिमार्गादपाक्रामन्पर्वतेन्द्रो हि गच्छतः । किं पुनर्जीवितप्रेप्सुर्बिभ्रद्वै मांसशोणितम् ।। ७.३४.
Even the lord of mountains would flee from Vali's path as he advanced—how much more so one who values his life and is covered in flesh and blood?
अपक्षिगणसम्पातान्वानरेन्द्रो महाजवः । क्रमशः सागरान्सर्वान्सन्ध्याकालमवन्दत ।। ७.३४.
The swift monkey king, passing flocks of birds, gradually bowed to all the oceans at the time of twilight.
