Then the descendants of Raghu, with their wives, went to the resting place; and the king, along with the assembly of sages and relatives, followed, watching.

Hear now the seventy-fourth sarga (canto). In the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Bālakāṇḍa, the seventy-fourth sarga.
When night had passed, the great sage Vishvamitra, having taken leave of the two kings, departed for the northern mountains.
When Vishvamitra had gone, King Dasharatha, after taking leave of the king of Videha, swiftly returned to his city.
Then the king of Videha gave abundant bridal gifts; the lord of Mithila gave hundreds of thousands of cows.
He gave fine woolen blankets, silks, and millions of garments; elephants, horses, chariots, and foot soldiers, all adorned and of divine appearance.
He gave a hundred maidens, each with excellent male and female servants; gold, refined gold, pearls, and coral.
The king, greatly delighted, gave incomparable bridal gifts; having given many kinds of gifts, the king took leave of the monarch.
The lord of Mithilā entered his own city, Mithilā; and the king, ruler of Ayodhyā, with his noble sons,
Having placed all the sages at the forefront, he proceeded, accompanied by his army; and as the tiger among men went, with the assembly of sages and Rāma,
Terrifying birds uttered cries all around; and all the animals of the earth began to move in a circle.
Seeing them, the tiger among kings questioned Vasiṣṭha: 'These birds are grim, and the animals are circling.'
'What is this that makes my heart tremble, and my mind sink?' Hearing these words of King Daśaratha,
The great sage spoke sweet words: 'Let the result of this be heard. A dreadful danger has arisen, divine, emanating from the mouths of birds.'
'These animals are calming, let distress be abandoned.' As they conversed there, the wind appeared,
Shaking all the earth and causing great trees to fall; the sun was covered by darkness, and none could discern the directions.
Everything was covered with ash, and the whole army seemed bewildered; Vasiṣṭha, other sages, and the king with his sons,
Were as if conscious there, while all else was insensible; in that terrible darkness, the army seemed covered with ash.
The king saw one resembling a mighty being, bearing a mass of matted hair; Bhārgava, son of Jamadagni, destroyer of kings.
Unassailable like Kailāsa, unbearable like the fire of time; blazing with radiance, impossible for ordinary people to behold.
With an axe slung over his shoulder, a bow like a cluster of lightning, and grasping a fierce arrow, like Śiva who destroyed Tripura.
Seeing him, resembling a mighty being and blazing like fire, the sages led by Vasiṣṭha, devoted to recitation and sacrifice,
All the ascetics gathered and then spoke among themselves: 'Will he, angered by his father's killing, again destroy the warrior class?'
'Having previously slain the warriors, his anger and fever are gone; he does not intend to destroy the warriors again.'
Having spoken thus and taken offerings, the sages addressed Bhārgava, of terrifying appearance, with sweet words: 'Rāma, Rāma!'
Receiving that honor given by the sages, the powerful Rāma, son of Jamadagni, spoke to Rāma, son of Daśaratha.

This is the seventy-fifth sarga; listen to it.
O Rāma, son of Daśaratha, valiant one, your extraordinary prowess is renowned; I have also heard in detail of your breaking the bow.
That wondrous and inconceivable breaking of the bow—having heard of it, I have come here, taking up another auspicious bow.
Here is this formidable and mighty bow of Jāmadagnya; string it with an arrow and show your strength.
