ततः पुत्रकृतस्नेहात्कम्प्यमानो महाधृतिः । माहिष्मतीपतिं द्रष्टुमाजगाम महानृषिः ।। ७.३३.
Then, trembling from affection for his son yet steadfast, the great sage came to see the lord of Mahishmati.
स वायुमार्गमास्थाय वायुतुल्यगतिर्द्विजः । पुरीं माहिष्मतीं प्राप्तो मनःसम्पातविक्रमः ।। ७.३३.
That twice-born sage, proceeding by the path of the wind, with a speed equal to the wind, reached the city of Mahishmati, his mind moving with resolve.
सो ऽमरावतिसङ्काशां हृष्टपुष्टजनाकुलाम् । प्रविवेश पुरीं ब्रह्मा इन्द्रस्येवामरावतीम् ।। ७.३३.
He entered the city, splendid as Amaravati, crowded with joyful and prosperous people, like Brahma entering Indra’s Amaravati.
पादचारमिवादित्यं निष्पतन्तं सुदुर्दशम् । ततस्ते प्रत्यभिज्ञाय अर्जुनाय निवेदयन् ।। ७.३३.
Like the sun emerging with its radiant stride, difficult to behold, they recognized him and informed Arjuna.
पुलस्त्य इति विज्ञाय वचनाद्धैहयाधिपः । शिरस्यञ्जलिमाधाय प्रत्युद्गच्छत्तपस्विनम् ।। ७.३३.
Learning from the words that it was Pulastya, the lord of the Haihayas placed his hands in reverence upon his head and went forth to meet the ascetic.
पुरोहितो ऽस्य गृह्यार्घ्यं मधुपर्कं तथैव च । पुरस्तात्प्रययौ राज्ञः शक्रस्येव बृहस्पतिः ।। ७.३३.
His priest took up the offerings of water and honey-mixture, and advanced before the king, just as Brihaspati would before Indra.
ततस्तमृषिमायान्तमुद्यन्तमिव भास्करम् । अर्जुनो दृश्य सम्भ्रान्तो ववन्देन्द्र इवेश्वरम् ।। ७.३३.
Then, seeing the sage approaching, shining like the rising sun, Arjuna, startled, bowed to him as Indra would to the Lord.
स तस्य मधुपर्कं गां पाद्यमर्घ्यं निवेद्य च । पुलस्त्यमाह राजेन्द्रो हर्षगद्गदया गिरा ।। ७.३३.
He presented honey-mixture, a cow, water for washing feet, and the offering, and King Arjuna addressed Pulastya with words choked by joy.
अद्यैवममरावत्या तुल्या माहिष्मती कृता । अद्याहं तु द्विजेन्द्र त्वां यस्मात्पश्यामि दुर्दशम् ।। ७.३३.
Today, Mahishmati has become equal to Amaravati; today, O best of twice-born, I see you, who are so hard to behold.
अद्य मे कुशलं देव अद्य मे कुशलं व्रतम् । अद्य मे सफलं जन्म अद्य मे सफलं तपः । यस्माद्देवगणैर्वन्द्यौ वन्दे ऽहं चरणौ तव ।। ७.३३.
Today, O Lord, my welfare is assured; today, my vow is fulfilled; today, my birth is fruitful; today, my austerity bears fruit; for I worship your feet, which are honored by the hosts of gods.
इदं राज्यमिमे पुत्रा इमे दारा इमे वयम् । ब्रह्मन्किं कुर्मि किं कार्यमाज्ञापयतु नो भवान् ।। ७.३३.
This kingdom, these sons, these wives, and we ourselves are here; O Brahman, what shall I do, what is to be done? Let your command be given to us.
तं धर्मे ऽग्निषु पुत्रेषु शिवं पृष्ट्वा च पार्थिवम् । पुलस्त्योवाच राजानं हैहयानां तथा ऽर्जुनम् ।। ७.३३.
Having inquired about the king's welfare in righteousness, in the sacrificial fires, and in his sons, Pulastya spoke to the king of the Haihayas, Arjuna.
नरेन्द्राम्बुजपत्राक्ष पूर्णचन्द्रनिभानन । अतुलं ते बलं येन दशग्रीवस्त्वया जितः ।। ७.३३.
O king, lotus-eyed, whose face resembles the full moon, your strength is unmatched, by which you conquered Dashagriva.
भयाद्यस्योपतिष्ठेतां निष्पन्दौ सागरानिलौ । सो ऽयं मृधे त्वया बद्धः पौत्रो मे रणदुर्जयः ।। ७.३३.
Out of fear of whom the ocean and wind would stand motionless, he, my grandson, invincible in battle, has been bound by you in combat.
पुत्रकस्य यशः पीतं नाम विश्रावितं त्वया । मद्वाक्याद्याच्यमानो ऽद्य मुञ्च वत्सं दशाननम् ।। ७.३३.
The fame of my grandson has been spread by you, and his name made known; now, at my request, release Dashanana, my child.
पुलस्त्याज्ञां प्रगृह्योचे न किञ्चन वचो ऽर्जुनः । मुमोच वै पार्थिवेन्द्रो राक्षसेन्द्रं प्रहृष्टवत् ।। ७.३३.
Arjuna, having accepted Pulastya's command, spoke nothing further, and the king joyfully released the lord of the Rakshasas.
स तं प्रमुच्य त्रिदशारिमर्जुनः प्रपूज्य दिव्याभरणस्रगम्बरैः । अहिंसकं सख्यमुपेत्य साग्निकं प्रणम्य तं ब्रह्मसुतं गृहं ययौ ।। ७.३३.
Having freed the enemy of the gods, Arjuna honored him with divine ornaments, garlands, and garments; forming a peaceful alliance, he bowed to the son of Brahma with fire rites, and returned home.
पुलस्त्येनापि सन्त्यक्तो राक्षसेन्द्रः प्रतापवान् । परिष्वक्तः कृतातिथ्यो लज्जमानो विनिर्जितः ।। ७.३३.
Pulastya also abandoned the mighty king of the Rakshasas, who, having been embraced and honored as a guest, departed, ashamed and defeated.
पितामहसुतश्चापि पुलस्त्यो मुनिपुङ्गवः । मोचयित्वा दशग्रीवं ब्रह्मलोकं जगाम ह ।। ७.३३.
Pulastya, the eminent sage and grandson of the Creator, having freed Dashagriva, went to the world of Brahma.
एवं स रावणः प्राप्तः कार्तवीर्यात्प्रधर्षणम् । पुलस्त्यवचनाच्चापि पुनर्मुक्तो महाबलः ।। ७.३३.
Thus Ravana, having suffered humiliation from Kartavirya, was again released by the mighty Pulastya's words.
एवं बलिभ्यो बलिनः सन्ति राघवनन्दन । नावज्ञा हि परे कार्या य इच्छेत् प्रियमात्मनः ।। ७.३३.
Thus, O delight of the Raghu lineage, there are those stronger than the strong; one should not disregard others, who desire what is good for themselves.
ततः स राजा पिशिताशनानां सहस्रबाहोरुपलभ्य मैत्रीम् । पुनर्नृपाणां कदनं चकार चचार सर्वां पृथिवीं च दर्पात् ।। ७.३३.
Then that king, having made peace with Sahasrabahu, the lord of the flesh-eaters, once again waged war upon the other kings and, out of pride, roamed the entire earth.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदुत्तरकाण्डे त्रयस्त्रिंशः सर्गः
Thus ends the thirty-third sarga in the glorious Uttarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first poem, composed by the sage Valmiki.
अर्जुनेन विमुक्तस्तु रावणो राक्षसाधिपः । चचार पृथिवीं सर्वामनिर्विण्णस्तथा कृतः ।। ७.३४.
Released by Arjuna, Ravana, the lord of the Rakshasas, wandered the whole earth, undiscouraged as before.
राक्षसं वा मनुष्यं वा शृणुते ऽयं बलाधिकम् । रावणस्तं समासाद्य युद्धे ह्वयति दर्पितः ।। ७.३४.
Whenever Ravana heard of any Rakshasa or human who was powerful, he would arrogantly challenge him to battle.
ततः कदाचित्किष्किन्धां नगरीं वालिपालिताम् । गत्वा ह्वयति युद्धाय वालिनं हेममालिनम् ।। ७.३४.
Then, once, he went to the city of Kishkindha, ruled by Vali, adorned with a golden garland, and challenged Vali to fight.
ततस्तु वानरामात्यस्तारस्तारापिता प्रभुः । उवाच वानरो वाक्यं युद्धप्रेप्सुमुपागतम् ।। ७.३४.
Then Tara, the wise Vanara minister, addressed Vali, who was eager for battle and had come forth.
राक्षसेन्द गतो वाली यस्ते प्रतिबलो भवेत् । को ऽन्यः प्रमुखतः स्थातुं तव शक्तः प्लवङ्गमः ।। ७.३४.
O king of the Rakshasas, Vali has gone forth—who else among the Vanaras could stand before you as your equal?
चतुर्भ्यो ऽपि समुद्रेभ्यः सन्ध्यामन्वास्य रावण । इमं मुहूर्तमायाति वाली तिष्ठ मुहूर्तकम् ।। ७.३४.
Ravana, after performing the evening rites at the four oceans, Vali will arrive here in this very moment—wait just a little while.
एतानस्थिचयान्पश्य य एते शङ्खपाण्डुराः । युद्धार्थिनामिमे राजन्वानराधिपतेजसा ।। ७.३४.
Behold these heaps of bones, white as conch-shells—these are from those who sought battle, destroyed by the majesty of the Vanara king.
