आगच्छ तात गच्छामो रणकर्म निवर्तताम् । जितं नो विदितं ते ऽस्तु स्वस्थो भव गतज्वरः ।। ७.२९.
Come, father, let us go; let the battle cease. Know that victory is ours. Be at ease, free from distress.
अयं हि सुरसैन्यस्य त्रैलोक्यस्य च यः प्रभुः । स गृहीतो दैवबलाद्भग्नदर्पाः सुराः कृताः ।। ७.२९.
For the lord of the army of gods and of the three worlds has been captured by divine power; the gods have been humbled and their pride broken.
यथेष्टं भुङ्क्ष्व लोकांस्त्रीन्निगृह्यारातिमोजसा । वृथा किं ते श्रमेणेह युद्धमद्य तु निष्फलम् ।। ७.२९.
Enjoy the three worlds as you wish, having subdued your enemies by your might. Why exhaust yourself in vain? Today's battle is fruitless.
ततस्ते दैवतगणा निवृत्ता रणकर्मणः । तच्छ्रुत्वा रावणेर्वाक्यं स्वस्थचेताः बभूव ह ।। ७.२९.
Then the hosts of gods, having ceased from battle, upon hearing Rāvaṇa’s words, regained their composure.
अथ स रणविगतज्वरः प्रभुर्विजयमवाप्य निशाचराधिपः । स्वभवनमभितो जगाम हृष्टः स्वसुतमवाप्य च वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।। ७.२९.
Thereafter, that lord, the king of night-wandering beings, his fever of battle gone and victory attained, joyfully returned to his palace, and, having recovered his son, spoke these words.
अतिबलसदृशैः पराक्रमैस्तैर्मम कुलमानविवर्धनं कृतम् । यदयमतुल्यबलस्त्वयाद्य वै त्रिदशपतिस्त्रिदशाश्च निर्जिताः ।। ७.२९.
By those feats of valor, equal to those of Atibala, you have increased the honor of our lineage; for today, by your unmatched strength, the lord of the gods and all the immortals have been conquered.
नय रथमधिरोप्य वासवं नगरमितो व्रज सेनया वृतस्त्वम् । अहमपि तव गच्छतो द्रुतं सह सचिवैरनुयामि पृष्ठतः ।। ७.२९.
Take Indra, mounting the chariot, and go from here to his city, surrounded by your army; I too, with my ministers, will swiftly follow behind you as you depart.
अथ स बलवृतः सवाहनस्त्रिदशपतिं परिगृह्य रावणिः । स्वभवनमभिगम्य वीर्यवान्कृतसमरान्विससर्ज राक्षसान् ।। ७.२९.
Then the mighty son of Rāvaṇa, surrounded by his forces and vehicles, having seized the lord of the gods, returned to his own palace, and, his battle accomplished, dismissed the rākṣasas.
जिते महेन्द्रे ऽतिबले रावणस्य सुतेन वै । प्रजापतिं पुरस्कृत्य ययुर्लङ्कां सुरास्तदा ।। ७.३०.
When Indra had been defeated by Atibala, the son of Rāvaṇa, the gods, led by the Lord of Creatures, went to Laṅkā.
तत्र रावणमासाद्य पुत्रभ्रातृभिरावृतम् । अब्रवीद्गगने तिष्ठन्सामपूर्वं प्रजापतिः ।। ७.३०.
There, encountering Rāvaṇa surrounded by his sons and brothers, the Lord of Creatures, standing in the sky, spoke to him with gentle words.
वत्स रावण तुष्टो ऽस्मि पुत्रस्य तव संयुगे । अहो ऽस्य विक्रमौदार्यं तव तुल्यो ऽधिको ऽपि वा ।। ७.३०.
Child Rāvaṇa, I am pleased with your son in battle; truly, his valor and generosity are remarkable—he is equal to you, or perhaps even greater.
जितं हि भवता सर्वं त्रैलोक्यं स्वेन तेजसा । कृता प्रतिज्ञा सफला प्रीतो ऽस्मि स्वसुतेन वै ।। ७.३०.
Indeed, by your own brilliance, you have conquered the entire three worlds; your vow has been fulfilled, and I am pleased with your son.
अयं च पुत्रो ऽतिबलस्तव रावण वीर्यवान् । जगतीन्द्रजिदित्येव परिख्यातो भविष्यति ।। ७.३०.
And this son of yours, Atibala, O Rāvaṇa, is mighty; he will become renowned as the conqueror of Indra among all beings.
बलवान्दुर्जयश्चैव भविष्यत्येव राक्षसः । यं समाश्रित्य ते राजन्स्थापितास्त्रिदशा वशे ।। ७.३०.
This rākṣasa will be strong and unconquerable; relying on him, O king, you have brought the gods under your control.
तन्मुच्यतां महाबाहो महेन्द्रः पाकशासनः । किञ्चास्य मोक्षणार्थाय प्रयच्छन्तु दिवौकसः ।। ७.३०.
Therefore, O mighty-armed one, release Mahendra, the wielder of the thunderbolt; and let the gods grant him something for his liberation.
अथाब्रवीन्महातेजा इन्द्रजित्समितिञ्जयः । अमरत्वमहं देव वृणे यद्येष मुच्यते ।। ७.३०.
Then Indrajit, the mighty victor in battle, of great splendor, said: 'O gods, if he is released, I choose immortality.'
चतुष्पदां खेचराणामन्येषां वा महौजसाम् । वृक्षगुल्मक्षुपलतातृणोपलमहीभृताम् ।। ७.३०.
Among quadrupeds, among those who move in the sky, or among other beings of great might—among trees, shrubs, creepers, grasses, stones, and mountains—
सर्वे ऽपि जन्तवो ऽन्योन्यं भेतव्ये सति बिभ्यति । अतो ऽत्र लोके सर्वेषां सर्वस्माच्च भवेद्भयम् ।। ७.३०.
All creatures, when there is cause for fear from one another, are afraid; thus, in this world, fear arises for all from everyone.
ततो ऽब्रवीन्महातेजा मेघनादं प्रजापतिः । नास्ति सर्वामरत्वं हि कस्यचित्प्राणिनो भुवि । चतुष्पदः पक्षिणश्च भूतानां वा महौजसाम् ।। ७.३०.
Then the Lord of Creatures, of great splendor, said to Meghanāda: 'There is no absolute immortality for any living being on earth—not for quadrupeds, birds, or other mighty beings.'
श्रुत्वा पितामहेनोक्तमिन्द्रजित्प्रभुणाव्ययम् ।। ७.३०.
Hearing these words spoken by the imperishable Lord Brahmā, Indrajit—
्वं हि कस्यचित्प्राणिनो भुवि । अथाब्रवीत्स तत्रस्थं मेघनादो महाबलः । श्रूयतां वा भवेत्सिद्धिः शतक्रतुविमोक्षणे ।। ७.३०.
—for no living being on earth—then the mighty Meghanāda, standing there, said: 'Let it be heard what boon may bring success in the release of Śatakratu (Indra).'
ममेष्टं नित्यशो हर्व्यैर्मन्त्रैः सम्पूज्य पावकम् । सङ्ग्राममवतर्त्तुं च शत्रुनिर्जयकाङ्क्षिणः ।। ७.३०.
Let the fire, ever honored with offerings and mantras as I desire, be worshipped; and let me descend into battle, seeking victory over my enemies.
अश्वयुक्तो रथो मह्यमुत्तिष्ठेत्तु विभावसोः । तत्स्थस्यामरता स्यान्मे एष मे निश्चयो वरः ।। ७.३०.
Let a chariot yoked with horses arise for me from the fire; standing upon it, may I possess immortality—this is the boon I have resolved upon.
तस्मिन्यद्यसमाप्ते च जप्यहोमे विभावसौ । युध्येयं देव सङ्ग्रामे तदा मे स्याद्विनाशनम् ।। ७.३०.
If, while the recitation and oblation to the fire remain incomplete, I should engage in battle, then, O god, let my destruction come at that time.
सर्वो हि तपसा देव वृणोत्यमरतां पुमान् । विक्रमेण मया त्वेतदमरत्वं प्रवर्तितम् ।। ७.३०.
Indeed, O god, everyone attains immortality through austerity; but by my own prowess, I have established this immortality.
एवमस्त्विति तं चाह वाक्यं देवः पितामहः । मुक्तश्चेन्द्रजिता शक्रो गताश्च त्रिदिवं सुराः ।। ७.३०.
‘So be it,’ said the god Brahmā to him; and Indra was released by Indrajit, and the gods returned to heaven.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे राम दीनो भ्रष्टाम्बरद्युतिः । इन्द्रश्चिन्तापरीतात्मा ध्यानतत्परतां गतः ।। ७.३०.
Meanwhile, O Rāma, Indra, dejected, his radiance and garments lost, his mind overwhelmed by anxiety, entered into deep meditation.
तं तु दृष्ट्वा तथाभूतं प्राह देवः प्रजापतिः । शतक्रतो किमु पुरा करोति स्म सुदुष्कृतम् ।। ७.३०.
Seeing him thus, the god Prajāpati spoke: ‘O Śatakratu, what grievous deed did you commit before?’
अमरेन्द्र मया बह्व्यः प्रजाः सृष्टास्तथा प्रभो । एकवर्णाः समाभाषा एकरूपाश्च सर्वशः ।। ७.३०.
O lord of gods, I created many beings, O mighty one; all were of one color, spoke one language, and were alike in every way.
तासां नास्ति विशेषो हि दर्शने लक्षणे ऽपि वा । ततो ऽहमेकाग्रमनास्ताः प्रजाः परिचिन्तयम् ।। ७.३०.
Among them there was no distinction, neither in appearance nor in features; so, with focused mind, I pondered over these beings.
