'He cannot be slain today, for he is utterly fearless due to boons. Therefore, let us capture this demon, as you are able in battle.'
'Just as, when Bala and Virocana were restrained, I ruled the three worlds, so now I desire the restraint of this wicked one.'
Then Indra, abandoning Rāvaṇa, went to another place and fought, terrifying the Rākṣasas in battle, O great king.
Rāvaṇa entered from the north, not turning back, while Śatakratu entered from the southern side.
Then the lord of the Rākṣasas, having advanced a hundred yojanas, showered the entire army of the gods with volleys of arrows.
Then Indra, seeing that his own army was destroyed, calmly turned back, surrounding Rāvaṇa.
At that moment, a cry arose from the Dānavas and Rākṣasas, 'Alas, we are slain!'—seeing Rāvaṇa seized by Indra.
Then Rāvaṇi, filled with furious anger, mounted his chariot and, greatly enraged, entered that dreadful army.
Entering that great illusion, once obtained by the lord of cattle, he, greatly agitated, rushed upon that army.
Abandoning all the gods, he charged directly at Indra; but the mighty Mahendra could not see the enemy's son.
There, though being attacked by the gods of great might, Rāvaṇi, without armor, did not react at all.
He struck Mātali, who was approaching, with excellent arrows, and again covered Mahendra with a shower of arrows.
Then Indra abandoned his chariot and dismissed his charioteer; mounting Airāvata, he pursued Rāvaṇi.
There, empowered by illusion and invisible, moving through the sky, he made Indra surrounded by illusion and then attacked him with arrows.
When Rāvaṇi saw Indra exhausted, he bound him with illusion and led him, surrounded by his own army.
Seeing mighty Indra being led away by force from the great battlefield, all the immortals wondered what might happen.
That master of illusion, the victorious Śakrajit, is not seen; by whom, though learned, Indra is forcibly led away by illusion.
At that moment, all the hosts of gods, enraged, turned upon Rāvaṇa and showered him with arrows.
But when Rāvaṇa faced the Ādityas and Vasus, he could not fight in battle, being pressed by his enemies.
Seeing his father worn out and battered by blows, Rāvaṇi, standing before him in battle, spoke these words:
Come, father, let us go; let the battle cease. Know that victory is ours. Be at ease, free from distress.
For the lord of the army of gods and of the three worlds has been captured by divine power; the gods have been humbled and their pride broken.
Enjoy the three worlds as you wish, having subdued your enemies by your might. Why exhaust yourself in vain? Today's battle is fruitless.
Then the hosts of gods, having ceased from battle, upon hearing Rāvaṇa’s words, regained their composure.
Thereafter, that lord, the king of night-wandering beings, his fever of battle gone and victory attained, joyfully returned to his palace, and, having recovered his son, spoke these words.
By those feats of valor, equal to those of Atibala, you have increased the honor of our lineage; for today, by your unmatched strength, the lord of the gods and all the immortals have been conquered.
Take Indra, mounting the chariot, and go from here to his city, surrounded by your army; I too, with my ministers, will swiftly follow behind you as you depart.
Then the mighty son of Rāvaṇa, surrounded by his forces and vehicles, having seized the lord of the gods, returned to his own palace, and, his battle accomplished, dismissed the rākṣasas.
When Indra had been defeated by Atibala, the son of Rāvaṇa, the gods, led by the Lord of Creatures, went to Laṅkā.
There, encountering Rāvaṇa surrounded by his sons and brothers, the Lord of Creatures, standing in the sky, spoke to him with gentle words.
