As he entered, bearing various weapons, the gods fled in all directions merely at the sight of him.
At that time, none among those desiring battle stood before him; having struck all, and seeing them terrified, Śakra spoke to the gods.
Do not fear, do not retreat; stand firm in battle, O gods. My son, undefeated, goes forth now for combat.
Then the god, son of Śakra, renowned as Jayanta, advanced into battle with a wondrous chariot.

Then all the gods surrounded Śacī’s son, and, confronting Rāvaṇa’s son in battle, began to strike him.
A battle arose between the gods and rākṣasas, matching the might of Mahendra’s son and the son of the rākṣasa king.
Then, upon Mātali’s son Gomukha, the rākṣasa prince rained arrows adorned with gold, striking the charioteer.
Likewise, Śacī’s son Jayanta struck his charioteer, and Rāvaṇa’s son, enraged, attacked him from all sides.

Filled with wrath, powerful, his eyes wide with rage, Rāvaṇa’s son showered Indra’s son with volleys of arrows.
Then, furious, Rāvaṇa’s son hurled thousands of sharp-edged weapons upon the army of the gods.

He cast down mighty weapons—hundred-killers, clubs, spears, maces, swords, axes—and great mountain peaks.
Then the worlds were seized with terror, and darkness arose as the son of Ravana struck down the enemy armies.
Thereafter, that divine host, all around, beset the son of Shachi in many ways, and he became greatly distressed, tormented by arrows.
Neither could the demons recognize the gods, nor the gods the demons; everywhere confusion prevailed, and all ran about in disorder.
The gods struck at gods, and the demons at demons; bewildered and shrouded in darkness, others fled in all directions.

Meanwhile, the mighty hero named Puloma, lord of the Daityas, seized the son of Shachi and carried him away.

Having seized his grandson, Puloma entered the ocean then, for he was the maternal grandfather of Shachi, by whom she was born.
When the gods realized the destruction of Jayanta, they all became dejected and, filled with distress, fled.
Then Ravani, enraged and surrounded by his own forces, charged at the gods, letting out a mighty roar.
Seeing his son's destruction and the gods in flight, the lord of the gods said to Matali, 'Bring the chariot at once.'
That divine, most formidable chariot, always ready, drawn by Matali with great speed, was brought forth.
Then clouds, massive and charged with lightning, moved before the chariot, driven by the wind, resounding with tremendous thunder.

Various instruments were played, the Gandharvas stood attentive, and groups of Apsaras danced as the lord of the gods set out.

Surrounded by Rudras, Vasus, Adityas, Sadhyas, and Maruts, all bearing diverse weapons, the lord of the gods departed.

As Shakra set out, a harsh wind blew, the sun lost its brilliance, and great meteors fell.

Meanwhile, the valiant ten-headed one, full of might, mounted his celestial chariot, crafted by Vishvakarman.
Encircled by great and awe-inspiring serpents, whose breath made it seem ablaze in battle, that chariot inspired terror.

That chariot, surrounded by Daityas and night-wandering demons, advanced toward Mahendra, the Daitya eager for battle.

Having restrained his son, Ravani himself took his stand; withdrawing from the battle, he approached Ravana and sat down.
Then a battle broke out between the gods and the rākṣasas, as they rained down terrible weapons in the conflict like storm clouds.
