एतस्मिन्नन्तरे शूरो वसूनामष्टमो वसुः । सावित्र इति विख्यातः प्रविवेश रणाजिरम् ।। ७.२७.
Meanwhile, the eighth Vasū among the Vasus, renowned as Sāvitra, entered the battlefield.
तथा ऽ ऽदित्यौ महावीर्यौ त्वष्टा पूषा च दंशितौ । निंर्भयौ सह सैन्येन तदा प्राविशतां रणे ।। ७.२७.
Likewise, the two mighty Ādityas, Tvaṣṭṛ and Pūṣā, fearless, entered the battle together with their armies.
ततो युद्धं समभवत्सुराणां सह राक्षसैः । क्रुद्धानां रक्षसां कीर्तिं समरेष्वनिवर्तिनाम् ।। ७.२७.
Then a battle arose between the gods and the rākṣasas, whose fame in combat was unwavering and fierce.
ततस्ते राक्षसाः सर्वे विबुधान्समरे स्थितान् । नानाप्रहरणैर्घोरैर्जघ्नुः शतसहस्रशः ।। ७.२७.
All those rākṣasas struck the gods standing in battle with various dreadful weapons, by the hundreds and thousands.
देवाश्च राक्षसान्घोरान्महाबलपराक्रमान् । समरे विमलैः शस्त्रैरुपनिन्युर्यमक्षयम् ।। ७.२७.
The gods, too, sent the fierce and mighty rākṣasas to the abode of Yama in battle, using pure weapons.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे राम सुमाली नाम राक्षसः । नानाप्रहरणैः क्रुद्धस्तत्सैन्यं सो ऽभ्यवर्तत ।। ७.२७.
Meanwhile, O Rāma, Sumālī, the rākṣasa, enraged, advanced against that army with various weapons.
स दैवतबलं सर्वं नानाप्रहणैः शितैः । व्यध्वंसयत सङ्क्रुद्धो वायुर्जलधरं यथा ।। ७.२७.
He, furious, destroyed the entire divine force with sharp weapons, like the wind destroys a cloud.
ते महाबाणवर्षैश्च शूलप्रासैः सुदारुणैः । हन्यमानाः सुराः सर्वे न व्यतिष्ठन्त संहताः ।। ७.२७.
Struck by heavy showers of arrows and fierce spears, all the gods, gathered together, could not withstand.
ततो विद्राव्यमाणेषु दैवतेषु सुमालिना । वसूनामष्टमः क्रुद्धः सावित्रो वै व्यवस्थितः ।। ७.२७.
Then, as the gods were being routed by Sumālī, the eighth Vasū, Sāvitra, stood forth in anger.
संवृतः स्वैरथानीकैः प्रहरन्तं निशाचरम् । विक्रमेण महातेजा वारयामास संयुगे ।। ७.२७.
Surrounded by his own chariot divisions, the radiant one, with valor, blocked the attacking night-dweller in battle.
ततस्तयोर्महायुद्धमभवद्रोमहर्षणम् ।। ७.२७.
Then, between the two, a great and hair-raising battle took place.
सुमालिनो वसोश्चैव समरेष्वनिवर्तिनोः । ततस्तस्य महाबाणैर्वसुना सुमहात्मना । निहतः पन्नगरथः क्षणेन विनिपातितः ।। ७.२७.
Between Sumālī and the Vasū, both relentless in battle, the Vasū of great soul, with mighty arrows, swiftly struck down the serpent-chariot.
हत्वा तु संयुगे तस्य रथं बाणशतैश्चितम् । गदां तस्य वधार्थाय वसुर्जग्राह पाणिना ।। ७.२७.
Having destroyed his chariot in battle with hundreds of arrows, the Vasū took up his mace in his hand to kill him.
ततः प्रगृह्य दीप्ताग्रां कालदण्डोपमां गदाम् । तां मूर्ध्नि पातयामास सावित्रो वै सुमालिनः ।। ७.२७.
Then, seizing a mace with a blazing tip, resembling the rod of Time, Sāvitra struck it upon Sumāli’s head.
सा तस्योपरि चोल्काभा पतन्तीव बभौ गदा । इन्द्रप्रमुक्ता गर्जन्ती गिराविव महाशनिः ।। ७.२७.
That mace, falling upon him, shone like a meteor, thundering as if released by Indra, like a great lightning bolt striking a mountain.
तस्य नैवास्थि न शिरो न मांसं ददृशे तदा । गदया भस्मतां नीतं निहतस्य रणाजिरे ।। ७.२७.
At that moment, neither bone nor head nor flesh of the slain could be seen; by the mace, all was reduced to ashes upon the battlefield.
तं दृष्ट्वा निहतं सङ्ख्ये राक्षसास्ते समन्ततः । व्यद्रवन्सहिताः सर्वे क्रोशमानाः परस्परम् । विद्राव्यमाणा वसुना राक्षसा नावतस्थिरे ।। ७.२७.
Seeing him killed in battle, all the rākṣasas together fled in every direction, crying out to one another, driven away by Vasus, unable to stand their ground.
सुमालिनं हतं दृष्ट्वा वसुना भस्मसात्कृतम् । स्वसैन्यं विद्रुतं चापि लक्षयित्वा ऽर्दितं सुरैः ।। ७.२८.
Seeing Sumāli slain and reduced to ashes by Vasu, and observing their own army routed and afflicted by the gods,
ततः स बलवान्क्रुद्धो रावणस्य सुतस्तदा । निवर्त्य राक्षसान्सर्वान्मेघनादो व्यवस्थितः ।। ७.२८.
Then, powerful and enraged, the son of Rāvaṇa, Meghanāda, halted all the rākṣasas and stood firm.
सुरथेनाग्निवर्णेन कामगेन महारथः । अभिदुद्राव सेनां तां वनान्यग्निरिव ज्वलन् ।। ७.२८.
Mounted on Suratha, a great chariot of fiery hue and of his own choosing, he charged at that army like blazing fire through forests.
ततः प्रविशतस्तस्य विविधायुधधारिणः । विदुद्रुवुर्दिशः सर्वा दर्शनादेव देवताः ।। ७.२८.
As he entered, bearing various weapons, the gods fled in all directions merely at the sight of him.
न बभूव तदा कश्चिद्युयुत्सोरस्य सम्मुखे । सर्वानाविद्ध्य वित्रस्तांस्ततः शक्रो ऽब्रवीत्सुरान् ।। ७.२८.
At that time, none among those desiring battle stood before him; having struck all, and seeing them terrified, Śakra spoke to the gods.
न भेतव्यं न गन्तव्यं निवर्तध्वं रणे सुराः । एष गच्छति पुत्रो मे युद्धार्थमपराजितः ।। ७.२८.
Do not fear, do not retreat; stand firm in battle, O gods. My son, undefeated, goes forth now for combat.
ततः शक्रसुतो देवो जयन्त इति विश्रुतः । रथेनाद्भुतकल्पेन सङ्ग्रामे सो ऽभ्यवर्तत ।। ७.२८.
Then the god, son of Śakra, renowned as Jayanta, advanced into battle with a wondrous chariot.
ततस्ते त्रिदशाः सर्वे परिवार्य शचीसुतम् । रावणस्य सुतं युद्धे समासाद्य प्रजघ्निरे ।। ७.२८.
Then all the gods surrounded Śacī’s son, and, confronting Rāvaṇa’s son in battle, began to strike him.
तेषां युद्धं समभवत्सदृशं देवरक्षसाम् । महेन्द्रस्य च पुत्रस्य राक्षसेन्द्रसुतस्य च ।। ७.२८.
A battle arose between the gods and rākṣasas, matching the might of Mahendra’s son and the son of the rākṣasa king.
ततो मातलिपुत्रे तु गोमुखे राक्षसात्मजः । सारथौ पातयामास शरान्कनकभूषणान् ।। ७.२८.
Then, upon Mātali’s son Gomukha, the rākṣasa prince rained arrows adorned with gold, striking the charioteer.
शचीसुतश्चापि तथा जयन्तस्तस्य सारथिम् । तं चापि रावणिः क्रुद्धः समन्तात्प्रत्यविध्यत ।। ७.२८.
Likewise, Śacī’s son Jayanta struck his charioteer, and Rāvaṇa’s son, enraged, attacked him from all sides.
स हि क्रोधसमाविष्टो बली विस्फारितेक्षणः । रावणिः शक्रतनयं शरवर्षैरवाकिरत् ।। ७.२८.
Filled with wrath, powerful, his eyes wide with rage, Rāvaṇa’s son showered Indra’s son with volleys of arrows.
ततो नानाप्रहरणाञ्छितधारान्सहस्रशः । पातयामास सङ्क्रुद्धः सुरसैन्येषु रावणिः ।। ७.२८.
Then, furious, Rāvaṇa’s son hurled thousands of sharp-edged weapons upon the army of the gods.
