Duṣyanta, Suratha, Gādhi, King Gaya, and Purūravas—all these kings, O dear one, declared, 'We have been defeated.'
Then Rāvaṇa, lord of the rākṣasas, arrived at Ayodhyā.
That city, well-guarded by Anaraṇya like Amarāvatī by Indra, was protected by a tiger among men, equal in might to Purandara.
Approaching the king, Rāvaṇa said, 'Give me battle, or else declare yourself defeated—such is my command.'
Hearing those words of the wicked-hearted one, the lord of Ayodhyā, Anaraṇya, enraged, spoke to the king of the rākṣasas.
'I grant you single combat, O lord of rākṣasas. Stand ready at once; as you are, so shall I be.'
Then, as had been heard before, the mighty army of that king came forth, eager for the destruction of the rākṣasas.
There emerged ten thousand elephants, a hundred thousand horses, and many thousands of chariots and foot soldiers, O best of men.
Filling the earth, the army advanced with infantry and chariots into battle; then a great and fierce fight began, O expert in warfare.
Between King Anaraṇya and the lord of rākṣasas, an astonishing battle took place, as Rāvaṇa's forces clashed with the king's army.
Then all that army was destroyed, like an offering consumed in fire; after fighting for a long time and displaying supreme valor.
Coming upon that blazing force, it was quickly annihilated; there, the army entered the tumult like moths into a flame, perishing as offerings in fire.
The king saw his mighty army being destroyed, like hundreds of forest streams entering the great ocean.
Then, stringing his bow, which resembled Indra's, the king himself, filled with wrath, confronted Rāvaṇa.
By Anaraṇya, your ministers—Mārīca, Śuka, Sāraṇa, and Prahasta—were defeated and fled like deer.
Then the delight of the Ikṣvāku line rained down eight hundred arrows upon the head of the rākṣasa king.
But those arrows, as they fell, did not cause any injury, just as streams of rain falling from clouds do not harm a mountain's peak.
Then, the king was struck on the head by the enraged king of the Rākṣasas with his palm, and he fell from his chariot.
That king, fallen to the ground, his limbs unsteady and trembling, lay like a śāla tree struck down by a thunderbolt in the forest.
Laughing, the Rākṣasa addressed the lord of the earth, Ikṣvāku: 'What fruit have you now gained by fighting against me?'
'There is no one in the three worlds, O king of men, who could stand against me in single combat; I suspect you are too attached to pleasures and do not recognize my strength.'
To him speaking thus, the king, his senses dulled, replied: 'What can be done here? For time is impossible to overcome.'
'I have not been defeated by you, O self-praising Rākṣasa; it is by time alone that I have fallen, and you are merely the occasion.'
'What indeed can I do now, as my life comes to its end? I have not turned away in battle, nor have I been slain by you while fleeing.'
'Out of respect for the Ikṣvāku line, I will speak these words to you, O Rākṣasa: if I have given, if I have offered, if I have performed good austerities—'
'Then, in this very lineage of the great-souled Ikṣvākus, a son named Rāma, son of Daśaratha, will be born—he will take your life.'
Then, as that curse was uttered, divine drums sounded, struck by the gods, and a rain of flowers fell from the sky.
After that, the king, lord of kings, went to the realm of the gods; and when the king had ascended to heaven, the Rākṣasa withdrew.
Then, the lord of the Rākṣasas, terrifying mortals on earth, encountered Nārada, the foremost of sages, in a dense cloud.
Having offered his respects and inquired after his welfare and the reason for his coming, Daśagrīva, the night-wanderer, spoke to him.
