Then, by that lord of wealth, the great-souled king of the Yakṣas struck Rāvaṇa, the ten-headed one, on the head with his mace, but he did not waver from his place.
Then, O Rāma, those two, striking each other in that great battle, neither faltered nor grew weary, both filled with wrath.
Then the lord of wealth released the missile of fire against him, but the lord of the Rākṣasas countered that weapon with the missile of water.
Then the lord of the Rākṣasas entered into magical illusion and created a hundred thousand forms of demons for destruction.
A tiger, a boar, a rain cloud, a mountain, an ocean, a tree, a Yakṣa, and a Daitya—such forms did the ten-headed one assume and appear.
He performed many feats, yet none were visible; then, having received a great weapon from Rāma, the ten-headed one.
He struck Dhanada on the head, wielding a mighty mace; thus, hit by him, Dhanada was bewildered and drenched in blood.
Like an aśoka tree whose root has been cut, the lord of wealth fell down.
Then, surrounded there by treasures such as lotuses, Dhanada, revived by them, was brought to the Nandana grove.
Having conquered Dhanada, the king of the Rākṣasas, his heart rejoicing, seized the Puṣpaka, that celestial chariot marked by victory.
It was adorned with golden pillars, gateways of beryl gems, veiled with strings of pearls, and trees granting all desires.
Swift as thought, moving at will, taking any form, able to fly; with stairways of jewels and gold, and altars of heated gold.
Fit for the gods, inexhaustible, always delightful to the mind; full of wonders, beautifully decorated, perfectly crafted by Brahmā.
Created with every pleasure, enchanting and unsurpassed; neither cold nor hot, pleasant in all seasons, and auspicious.
The king mounted that chariot, which moved at will and was won by his valor; in his pride and arrogance, he considered the three worlds conquered.
Having defeated the god Vaiśravaṇa, he descended from Kailāsa.
By his own brilliance, having attained that vast victory, powerful and adorned with a spotless crown and garland, the night-wanderer shone, seated in the supreme chariot, like fire entering an assembly.
Having conquered Dhanada, Rāma, the lord of the Rākṣasas, went to the great Saravana, birthplace of the great general.
Then, the broad-necked one saw the splendid Saravana, wrapped in rays, like a second sun.
He ascended a mountain and entered a delightful forest; there he saw the Puṣpaka, at that time restrained by Rāma.
Seeing the Puṣpaka immobilized, though made to move at will, the king of the Rākṣasas reflected, surrounded by his ministers.
For what reason does my Puṣpaka not move at my wish? Could this be the work of someone atop the mountain?
Then Rāma, the wise Marīca, spoke: 'O king, it is not without cause that the Puṣpaka does not move.'
Or else, this Puṣpaka, a vehicle from Kubera, became motionless, for it cannot move without the lord of wealth.
Then, in the midst of those words, appeared a fierce, dark, tawny dwarf, grotesque and bald, Nandī, strong with bowed arms.
Approaching from the side, the attendant of Bhava spoke; Nandīśvara addressed the king of the Rākṣasas, without hesitation.
Turn back, O Ten-headed one; Śaṅkara is sporting on the mountain, along with the Suparṇas, Nāgas, Yakṣas, Devas, Gandharvas, and Rākṣasas.
This mountain has been made inaccessible to all beings; hearing Nandī's words, his earrings quivered in anger.
With eyes reddened by rage, he descended from the Puṣpaka, saying, 'Who is this Śaṅkara?' and approached the base of the mountain.
There he saw Nandī standing near the god, holding a blazing trident, like a second Śaṅkara.
