एवमुक्त्वा तु लङ्केशो दूतं खड्गेन जघ्निवान् । ददौ भक्षयितुं ह्येनं राक्षसानां दुरात्मनाम् ।। ७.१३.
Having spoken thus, the lord of Lanka struck the messenger with his sword and gave him to the wicked rākṣasas to be devoured.
एवं कृतस्वस्त्ययनो रथमारुह्य रावणः । त्रैलोक्यविजयाकाङ्क्षी ययौ यत्र धनेश्वरः ।। ७.१३.
Thus having performed the rite of dismissal, Rāvaṇa mounted his chariot, desiring victory over the three worlds, and went to where the lord of wealth was.
ततस्तु सचिवैः सार्धं षड्भिर्नित्यं बलोद्धतैः । महोदरप्रहस्ताभ्यां मारीचशुकसारणैः ।। ७.१४.
Then, together with his six ever-mighty counselors—Mahodara, Prahasta, Mārīca, Śuka, Sāraṇa—
धूम्राक्षेण च वीरेण नित्यं समरगृध्नुना । वृतः संप्रययौ श्रीमान्क्रोधाल्लोकान्दहन्निव ।। ७.१४.
And with the valiant Dhūmrākṣa, ever eager for battle, he set out, blazing with wrath as if to burn the worlds.
पुराणि स नदीः शैलान्वनान्युपवनानि च । अतिक्रम्य मुहूर्तेन कैलासं गिरिमागमत् ।। ७.१४.
Crossing ancient cities, rivers, mountains, forests, and groves in a moment, he reached Mount Kailāsa.
सन्निविष्टं गिरौ तस्मिन्राक्षसेन्द्रं निशम्य तु । युद्धे ऽत्यर्थकृतोत्साहं दुरात्मानं समन्त्रिणम् ।। ७.१४.
Hearing that the lord of the rākṣasas, eager for battle and accompanied by his counselors, was encamped on that mountain,
यक्षा न शेकुः संस्थातुं प्रमुखे तस्य रक्षसः । राज्ञो भ्रातेति विज्ञाय गता यत्र धनेश्वरः ।। ७.१४.
The yakṣas could not stand before that rākṣasa king; knowing him to be the king's brother, they went to the lord of wealth.
ते गत्वा सर्वमाचख्युर्भ्रातुस्तस्य चिकीर्षितम् । अनुज्ञाता ययुर्हष्टा युद्धाय धनदेन ते ।। ७.१४.
Having gone, they reported everything their brother intended; then, permitted by Dhanada, they joyfully went to battle.
ततो बलानां सङ्क्षोभो व्यवर्धत महोदधेः । तस्य नैर्ऋतराजस्य शैलं सञ्चालयन्निव ।। ७.१४.
Then the tumult of armies swelled like the great ocean, as if shaking the mountain for the king of the night-dwellers.
ततो युद्धं समभवद्यक्षराक्षससङ्कुलम् । व्यथिताश्चाभवंस्तत्र सचिवा राक्षसस्य ते ।। ७.१४.
Then a battle arose, crowded with yakṣas and rākṣasas; there, the counselors of the rākṣasa were distressed.
स दृष्ट्वा तादृशं सैन्यं दशग्रीवो निशाचरः । हर्षनादान्बहून्कृत्वा स क्रोधादभ्यधावत ।। ७.१४.
Seeing such an army, the ten-headed night-wanderer, making many shouts of joy, charged forward in wrath.
ये तु ते राक्षसेन्द्रस्य सचिवा घोरविक्रमाः । तेषां सहस्रमेकैकं यक्षाणां समयोधयन् ।। ७.१४.
But those ministers of the king of the Rākṣasas, terrible in their valor, each one of them engaged a thousand Yakṣas in battle.
ततो गदाभिर्मुसलैरसिभिः शक्तितोमरैः । हन्यमानो दशग्रीवस्तत्सैन्यं समगाहत ।। ७.१४.
Then Daśagrīva, struck with maces, clubs, swords, spears, and javelins, attacked that army.
स निरुच्छ्वासवत्तत्र वध्यमानो दशाननः । वर्षद्भिरिव जीमूतैर्धाराभिरवरुध्यत ।। ७.१४.
There, Daśānana, being struck down, became breathless, as if oppressed by torrents of rain-clouds for years.
न चकार व्यथां चैव यक्षशस्त्रैः समाहतः । महीधर इवाम्भोदैर्धाराशतसमुक्षितः ।। ७.१४.
Even when struck by the Yakṣas' weapons, he did not feel pain, like a mountain drenched by hundreds of streams from rain-clouds.
स दुरात्मा समुद्यम्य कालदण्डोपमां गदाम् । प्रविवेश ततः सैन्यं नयन्यक्षान्यमक्षयम् ।। ७.१४.
That wicked one, raising a mace like the rod of Time, then entered the army, destroying the Yakṣas without remainder.
स कक्षमिव विस्तीर्णं शुष्केन्धनमिवाकुलम् । वातेनाग्निरिवायत्तो यक्षसैन्यं ददाह तत् ।। ७.१४.
He burned that Yakṣa army as fire driven by wind burns a vast thicket or dry wood scattered about.
तैस्तु तत्र महामात्यैर्महोदरशुकादिभिः । अल्पावशेषास्ते यक्षाः कृता वातैरिवाम्बुदाः ।। ७.१४.
By those great ministers, Mahodara, Śuka, and others, the Yakṣas were left few in number, like clouds scattered by winds.
केचित्समाहता भग्नाः पतिताः समरक्षितौ । ओष्ठांश्च दशनैस्तीक्ष्णैरदशन्कुपिता रणे ।। ७.१४.
Some, struck and broken, fell on the battlefield, and in their rage, bit their own lips with sharp teeth.
श्रान्ताश्चान्योन्यमालिङ्ग्य भ्रष्टशस्त्रा रणाजिरे । सीदन्ति च तदा यक्षाः कूला इव जलेन ह ।। ७.१४.
Exhausted, embracing one another, their weapons fallen, the Yakṣas then collapsed on the battlefield like riverbanks eroded by water.
हतानां गच्छतां स्वर्गं युध्यतां पृथिवीतले । प्रेक्षतामृषिसङ्घानां न बभूवान्तरं दिवि ।। ७.१४.
Of those slain, ascending to heaven, and those fighting on the earth, as the groups of seers watched, there was no distinction between sky and ground.
भग्नांस्तु तान्समालक्ष्य यक्षेन्द्रांस्तु महाबलान् । धनाध्यक्षो महाबाहुः प्रेषयामास यक्षकान् ।। ७.१४.
Seeing those mighty Yakṣa lords broken, the great-armed lord of wealth sent forth more Yakṣas.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे राम विस्तीर्णबलवाहनः । प्रेषितो न्यपतद्यक्षो नाम्ना संयोधकण्टकः ।। ७.१४.
Meanwhile, O Rāma, a Yakṣa named Saṃyodhakaṇṭaka, commanding a vast and powerful force, was dispatched and fell upon the field.
तेन चक्रेण मारीचो विष्णुनेव रणे हतः । पतितो भूतले शैलात्क्षीणपुण्य इव ग्रहः ।। ७.१४.
By his discus, Mārīca was slain in battle, like a planet fallen from a mountain to the earth, its merit exhausted.
ससञ्ज्ञस्तु मुहूर्तेन स विश्रम्य निशाचरः । तं यक्षं योधयामास स च भग्नः प्रदुद्रुवे ।। ७.१४.
Regaining consciousness after a moment, the night-wanderer rested, then fought that Yakṣa, who, broken, fled.
ततः काञ्चनचित्राङ्गं वैडूर्यरजसोक्षितम् । मर्यादां प्रतिहाराणां तोरणान्तरमाविशत् ।। ७.१४.
Then he entered the gateway adorned with gold and dusted with cat's-eye powder, the passage of the guards' boundary.
तं तु राजन्दशग्रीवं प्रविशन्तं निशाचरम् । सूर्यभानुरिति ख्यातो द्वारपालो न्यवारयत् ।। ७.१४.
But as Daśagrīva, the night-wanderer, was entering, the gatekeeper known as Sūryabhānu stopped him.
स वार्यमाणो यक्षेण प्रविवेश निशाचरः । यदा तु वारितो राम न व्यतिष्ठत्स राक्षसः ।। ७.१४.
Though restrained by the Yakṣa, the night-wanderer entered; but when stopped, O Rāma, the Rākṣasa did not halt.
ततस्तोरणमुत्पाट्य तेन यक्षेण ताडितः । रुधिरं प्रस्रवन्भाति शैलो धातुस्रवैरिव ।। ७.१४.
Then, tearing up the gateway, struck by that Yakṣa, he bled, shining like a mountain streaming with ores.
स शैलशिखराभेण तोरणेन समाहतः । जगाम न क्षतिं वीरो वरदानात्स्वयम्भुवः ।। ७.१४.
Struck by that gateway, which resembled the peak of a mountain, the hero suffered no injury, due to the boon granted by the Self-born.
