Rāvaṇa chose for Kumbhakarṇa a wife named Vajrajvālī, granddaughter of Vairocana.
Vibhīṣaṇa took as his wife Saramā, the virtuous daughter of the great-souled king of the Gandharvas, Śailūṣa.
On the shore of the lake Mānasa, that lake grew greatly at the coming of the rains.
Out of affection, the mother of that maiden cried out, 'O lake, do not increase!' Thus she became known as Saramā.
Thus, having taken wives, the Rākṣasas enjoyed themselves there, each with his own wife, like Gandharvas in Nandana.
Then Mandodarī gave birth to a son, Meghanāda; he is the one you call Indrajit.
As soon as he was born, that son of Rāvaṇa let out a great cry, like the sound of thunderclouds.
And by his roar, Rāghava, that city of Laṅkā was rendered insensible; his father himself named him Meghanāda.
He grew up then, Rāma, within the splendid inner chambers of Rāvaṇa, guarded by exceptional women, concealed like fire within wood.
The son of Rāvaṇa brought great joy to his mother and father.
Then, after some time, a fierce sleep, sent by the lord of the worlds, came upon Kumbhakarṇa, taking form.
Then Kumbhakarṇa spoke to his brother, who was seated: 'Sleep troubles me, O king; arrange a residence for me.'
Then, by the king's command, artisans skilled as Viśvakarma were appointed; they built a spacious, shining hall, a yojana wide and twice as long.
They made it splendid and unobstructed for Kumbhakarṇa, adorned everywhere with pillars of crystal and gold, beautifully decorated.
With stairways made of beryl, lattices of bells, and gates set with ivory, and platforms of diamond and crystal.
The rākṣasa had it constructed, delightful and full of every comfort, always pleasant everywhere, like the sacred cave of Mount Meru.
There, the mighty Kumbhakarṇa was overtaken by sleep; lying down, he did not awaken for many thousands of years.
When Kumbhakarṇa was subdued by sleep, Daśānana, unrestrained, struck down the gods, sages, yakṣas, and gandharvas.
He went to the wondrous gardens, such as Nandana and others, and, greatly enraged, Daśānana destroyed them.
Like an elephant playing in a river, tossing trees as the wind, and shattering mountains as if hurled by a thunderbolt, the rākṣasa laid waste.
Having learned of these deeds, the lord of wealth, knowing righteousness and recalling his own conduct befitting his lineage, considered Daśagrīva.
Then, for the sake of brotherly affection, Vaiśravaṇa sent a messenger to Laṅkā, for the welfare of Daśagrīva.
He went to the city of Laṅkā and met Vibhīṣaṇa, who honored him according to righteousness and asked about his arrival.
After inquiring about the well-being of the king and his relatives, Vibhīṣaṇa showed him Daśānana seated in the assembly.
Seeing the king there, shining with his own brilliance, he honored him with the words 'Victory!' and then stood silently.
Then, seated on that excellent couch adorned with splendid coverings, the messenger spoke these words to the ten-headed one.
King, I will tell you everything your brother has said; it is fitting for both your conduct and your lineage, O hero.
Well done, this much is sufficient; the collection of virtues has been accomplished. Well done—if it is possible, remain established in righteousness.
I have seen Nandana destroyed, I have heard that the sages were slain; and, O king, I have learned of the gods’ preparations against you.
I have been rejected by you many times, O lord of the Rākṣasas; indeed, in your youth, you wronged your own dear kinsfolk.
