He ascended the city, which had been abandoned by Kubera and had its great roads well divided, like the lord of the gods ascending heaven.
Then Daśānana, consecrated by the night-wandering beings, established his residence in the city; and that city became completely filled with night-wanderers, resembling dark rain clouds.
Kubera, out of respect for his father's command, established a city on the pure mountain, adorned with splendid buildings, just like Indra's Amarāvatī.
Then the king of the rākṣasas, having been consecrated together with his brothers, considered what gift he should give to his rākṣasī sister.
He gave his sister, named Śūrpaṇakhā, to Kālakeya, the lord of the dānavas, whose name was Vidyujjihva.
After giving her, the rākṣasa himself wandered about for hunting; there, he saw Maya, the son of Diti.
Seeing him accompanied by a maiden, Daśagrīva, the night-wanderer, asked: 'Who are you, alone in this forest devoid of men and beasts? For what reason do you remain here with this girl, whose eyes resemble those of a fawn?'
Maya then spoke to the night-wanderer who questioned him: 'Listen, I will tell you everything as it happened to me.'
Hemā is the name of an apsaras, O dear one, whom you may have heard of before; she was given to me by the gods, just as Paulomī was given to Śatakratu.
Attached to her, O dear one, my mind dwelled for five hundred years; but she departed for the work of the gods, and thirteen years have passed.
After fourteen years, I created by my art a golden city, adorned with varied jewels of diamond and beryl.
There I stayed, miserable, deprived of her, greatly afflicted.
From that city, taking my daughter, I came to the forest; this is my own child, O king, who grew in her womb.
With her, I have come to seek a husband for her; for the fatherhood of a maiden is indeed painful for all who desire honor.
A maiden, indeed, always remains in a state of uncertainty between two families; in this wife of mine, two sons were born to me.
The first, O dear one, was Māyāvī, and after him came Dundubhi; thus I have told you everything as it truly is, since you asked.
Now, dear one, how should I know who you are? Thus addressed, that courteous Rākṣasa replied as follows:
I am the son of Pulastya, known by the name Daśagrīva; the sage Viśravas, who was the third son of Brahmā, is my father.
Thus addressed by the lord of Rākṣasas, O Rāma, the Dānava, recognizing him as the great sage's son, became delighted and wished to give him his daughter.
Then Maya, taking his daughter's hand in his own, smilingly spoke these words to the king of Rākṣasas:
O king, this is my own daughter, Mandodarī by name, held by the celestial nymph Hemā; accept her as your wife.
Daśagrīva replied, 'So be it,' and, after invoking fire as witness, performed the joining of hands there.
O Rāma, Maya, being aware of the curse from the ascetic, gave her to him, knowing his ancestral lineage.
He also gave him an unfailing and wondrous weapon, obtained through intense austerity, by which Lakṣmaṇa was struck down.
Thus having acquired a wife, the lord and master of Laṅkā went to the city and brought his wife home with his brothers.
Rāvaṇa chose for Kumbhakarṇa a wife named Vajrajvālī, granddaughter of Vairocana.
Vibhīṣaṇa took as his wife Saramā, the virtuous daughter of the great-souled king of the Gandharvas, Śailūṣa.
On the shore of the lake Mānasa, that lake grew greatly at the coming of the rains.
Out of affection, the mother of that maiden cried out, 'O lake, do not increase!' Thus she became known as Saramā.
Thus, having taken wives, the Rākṣasas enjoyed themselves there, each with his own wife, like Gandharvas in Nandana.
