Those very heads shall be yours again, just as before, O Rakshasa; and here I grant you, gentle one, another boon, difficult to obtain.
By my boon, O best of Rakshasas, your form shall become, without doubt, whatever you desire, according to your will and wish.
Thus, as spoken by the Grandfather, the heads of the ten-necked Rakshasa, which had been offered into the fire, indeed arose again.
Having thus addressed the ten-necked one, O Rama, the Grandfather of the worlds then spoke these words to Vibhishana.
Vibhishana, my child, endowed with a mind set on righteousness, I am pleased with you; O virtuous one, choose a boon.
Vibhishana, righteous in soul, with joined palms, spoke these words, ever endowed with all virtues, like the moon with its rays.
O Lord, I am fulfilled, for the Teacher of the world himself addresses me; but if, out of affection, you wish to grant me a boon, hear it, O virtuous one.
Even in the greatest danger, may my mind remain fixed on righteousness; and may the knowledge of the Brahma-weapon, though unlearned, arise in me, O Lord.
Whatever understanding arises in me, in whatever ashram or situation, may each one be firmly established in righteousness, and may I uphold that dharma.
This, to me, is the highest and most noble boon; for nothing is difficult to obtain in this world for those devoted to righteousness.
Again, the pleased Lord of Creatures spoke to Vibhishana: 'You are indeed righteous, my child; so shall it be.'
Because, O destroyer of foes, though born in the Rakshasa race, your mind does not incline to unrighteousness, I grant you immortality.
Having thus spoken, when he was about to grant a boon to Kumbhakarna, all the gods, with joined palms, addressed the Lord of Creatures.
You should not grant a boon to Kumbhakarna, for you know how this evil-minded one terrifies the worlds.
In Nandana, seven Apsaras and ten attendants of Mahendra, as well as sages and humans, have been devoured by him, O Brahman.
What the Rakshasa has done without previously obtaining a boon—if he now gains a boon, he would devour the three worlds.
By the pretext of a boon, O one of immeasurable radiance, let delusion be given to him; thus, there will be welfare for the worlds and restraint for him.
Thus addressed by the gods, Brahmā, the lotus-born, reflected; and as he pondered, the goddess Sarasvatī appeared at his side.
Standing beside him with joined palms, Sarasvatī spoke: 'O Lord, I have arrived—what task shall I perform?'
The Lord of Creatures then addressed Sarasvatī, who had come: 'O Vāṇī, become the speech that the lord of the Rākṣasas desires, O goddess.'
Saying, 'So be it,' she entered him; then the Lord of Creatures spoke: 'Kumbhakarṇa, mighty-armed one, choose the boon you desire.'
Kumbhakarṇa, hearing these words, replied: 'O god of gods, what I desire is to sleep for many years.'
Saying, 'So be it,' Brahmā departed together with the gods; and the goddess Sarasvatī also withdrew from that Rākṣasa.
When Brahmā and the gods had gone to the sky, he was released by Sarasvatī and regained his own awareness.
But Kumbhakarṇa, of wicked mind, became troubled and thought: 'What is this strange speech that has just fallen from my lips?'
'I believe I was deluded by the gods who were present then.' Thus, all the brothers, blazing with energy, having obtained their boons, went to the Śleṣmātaka grove and dwelled there happily.
Sumālī, learning that these night-wanderers had obtained boons, rose up from the netherworld with his followers, casting off fear.
Mārīca, Prahasta, Virūpākṣa, and Mahodara—those ministers of the Rākṣasa—also rose up, greatly excited.
Sumālī, surrounded by his ministers and the foremost Rākṣasas, approached Daśagrīva and embraced him, saying these words:
'By fortune, my child, this cherished desire has been fulfilled: you have obtained the supreme boon from the lord of the three worlds.'
