As Padmanābha struck down that army from behind, Mālyavān turned back, like the ocean reaching the shore.
The night-wanderer, his eyes red with anger and hair disheveled, spoke these words to Padmanābha, the supreme person.
Nārāyaṇa, you do not know the ancient code of warriors; you kill us, who are fearful and unwilling to fight, just like any other.
He who kills one turned away in battle, O non-god, commits a sin and does not attain the heaven earned by the virtuous.
If you truly have the spirit for battle, O bearer of conch, discus, and mace, I stand ready—show me the strength you possess.
Seeing Mālyavān standing firm like a mountain, the mighty younger brother of the king of gods spoke to the Rākṣasa lord.
For the gods, who were terrified of you, I granted safety by destroying the Rākṣasas; that vow I now uphold.
I must always do what is dear to the gods, even at the cost of my life; therefore, I will slay you all, even if you descend to the netherworld.
As the Lord of Rākṣasas, enraged, heard the god of gods with lotus-red eyes speaking thus, he pierced him between the arms with his spear.
The spear released from Mālyavān's arm, ringing like a bell, shone upon Hari's chest like a thundercloud lit by a hundred flashes of lightning.
Then, the beloved of the wielder of the spear, lotus-eyed Hari, seized that very spear and hurled it at Mālyavān.
That spear, released from Skanda or as if shot from Govinda's hand, rushed toward the Rākṣasa, longing for him, like Mahendra's bolt toward Mount Añjana.
It fell upon the broad chest of the lord of the Rākṣasas, resplendent with the weight of his necklace, like a thunderbolt striking a mountain peak.
Struck by it, his armor shattered, Mālyavān entered deep darkness; but regaining his composure, he stood firm like an immovable mountain.
Then, grasping a black iron spear bristling with many barbs, he struck the god hard between the breasts.
Likewise, bloodied in battle, the night-stalker struck the brother of Vāsava with his fist, then withdrew a bow's length away.
Then a great sound arose in the sky, with cries of 'Well done, well done!' The Rākṣasa, having struck Viṣṇu, also struck Garuḍa.
Then Vainateya, enraged, swept the Rākṣasa away with the wind of his wings, as a powerful wind scatters a heap of dry leaves.
Seeing his elder driven off by the wind of the king of birds' wings, Sumālī, together with his forces, headed toward Laṅkā.
Mālyavān too, the Rākṣasa, swept away by the force of the wing-wind, gathered his own troops and went to Laṅkā, covered in shame.
Thus, O lotus-eyed one, those Rākṣasas were repeatedly defeated in battle by that Hari, their foremost leaders slain.
Unable to withstand Viṣṇu, terrified, they abandoned Laṅkā and went to dwell in the netherworld with their wives.
O best of the Raghu line, having met Sumālī, the Rākṣasa, those of renowned valor remained in the lineage of Sālakaṭaṅkaṭa.
But those whom you slew, they were the Rākṣasas called Paulastyas—Sumālī, Mālyavān, Mālī, and their leaders.
No one else but Nārāyaṇa, the god bearing conch, discus, and mace, can slay the Rākṣasas, those thorns to the gods.
You are that Nārāyaṇa, the eternal four-armed god, born to destroy the Rākṣasas—invincible, lordly, and imperishable.
He who restores lost righteousness, who creates beings in every age, is born to destroy evil-doers and cherishes those who seek refuge.
O king, I have now told you in full detail the origin of the rakshasas as it truly happened. Listen further, O best of the Raghu lineage, to the unparalleled birth and power of Ravana and his sons.
For a long time, Sumali, the rakshasa, wandered in the netherworld, afflicted by fear of Vishnu. Accompanied by his sons and grandsons, mighty in strength, he then settled in Lanka as the lord of wealth.
At a certain time, Sumali, the rakshasa, roamed from the netherworld throughout the entire mortal realm.
