He covered him like mist covers the sun; the rākṣasas, endowed with strength, regained their courage.
Then that rākṣasa, filled with pride and rage, charged forward, making a great roar, as if reviving the rākṣasas.
Raising his arm adorned with heavy ornaments and shaking it like an elephant, the rākṣasa roared with joy, like a thundercloud with lightning.
As Sumāli roared, his head adorned with blazing earrings was severed by the charioteer, and the horses of that demon became bewildered.
With those confused horses, Sumāli, lord of the demons, was whirled about, just as a man lacking resolve is tossed by his unruly senses.
Then mighty-armed Viṣṇu, descending onto the battlefield, approached Sumāli's chariot after its horses had been taken away.
Mālī, equipped and grasping his bow with arrows, rushed forward; arrows released from Mālī's bow, adorned with gold, struck Hari like winged chariots entering a krauñca bird.
Though assailed by thousands of arrows released by Mālī, Viṣṇu was not agitated in battle, like one who has conquered his senses is undisturbed by afflictions.
Then, making the bowstring resound, the blessed creator of beings, the destroyer of enemies, released a torrent of arrows at Mālī.
Those arrows, radiant like thunderbolts and lightning, struck Mālī's body and drank his blood, as serpents drink nectar.
Having turned Mālī away, the bearer of conch, discus, and mace struck down Mālī's crown, banner, bow, and horses.
Deprived of his chariot, Mālī, foremost among night-wanderers, seized his mace and charged, mace in hand, like a lion leaping from a mountain peak.
With his mace, Mālī struck the lord of Garuḍa on the forehead, as Death would strike the lord with his thunderbolt, just as Indra strikes a mountain.
Struck forcefully by Mālī's mace, Garuḍa, afflicted by pain, turned away from the battle, causing the god to retreat.
When Garuḍa had turned away from Mālī, a great sound arose from the demons as they roared in triumph.
Hearing the tumultuous cries of the roaring demons, the younger brother of Hari's horses—
Assuming a sideways stance, the enraged lord of birds, Hari, though turned away, hurled his discus at Mālī with intent to kill.
That discus, shining like the sun's orb and illuminating the sky with its own brilliance, resembling the wheel of time, struck Mālī's head.
That head of the demon king, severed by the discus, fell, streaming blood, like the head of Rāhu once fell.
Then, with all the gods rejoicing and their life-breaths stirred, a lion-like roar arose, with cries of 'Well done!' from those praising the gods.
Seeing Mālī slain, Sumāli and Mālyavān, overwhelmed with grief, fled with their forces straight to Laṅkā.
Then Garuḍa, reassured, returned as before and, enraged, drove away the Rākṣasas with the wind of his wings.
Some had their lotus-like faces cut by the discus, some had their chests crushed by the mace, some had their necks weakened by the plough, and some had their heads split by the pestle.
Some Rākṣasas were cut down by the sword, others tormented by arrows, and they quickly fell from the sky into the ocean's waters.
Nārāyaṇa pierced the night-wandering demons with showers of arrows released from his bow, scattering their loosened hair like thunderbolts shattering great rainclouds.
That army, with its parasols broken, weapons falling, garments disordered by arrows, entrails spilling out, and eyes rolling in fear, became even more frenzied.
The roars and charges of the night-wanderers and elephants, struck down like elephants by a lion of old, rose together in tumult.
Though restrained by showers of monkey-arrows, the night-wandering clouds, releasing their own volleys, fled like storm-clouds scattered by the wind.
The Rākṣasa lords, their heads severed by discus blows, bodies crushed by mace strikes, and limbs shattered by various attacks, fell like mountains struck down.
The night-wanderers, adorned with gem-studded necklaces and earrings, dark as rainclouds, fell continuously, appearing like blue mountains tumbling down.
