सुपर्णं गिरिसङ्काशं वैनतेयमथास्थितः । राक्षसानामभावाय ययौ तूर्णतरं प्रभुः ।। ७.६.
Mounted upon Garuḍa, who resembled a mountain, the Lord swiftly set out for the destruction of the Rākṣasas.
सुपर्णपृष्ठे स बभौ श्यामः पीताम्बरो हरिः । काञ्चनस्य गिरेः शृङ्गे सतडित्तोयदो यथा ।। ७.६.
Hari, dark-hued and clad in yellow garments, shone upon the back of Garuḍa like a rain-cloud with lightning on the golden peak of a mountain.
स सिद्धदेवर्षिमहोरगैश्च गन्धर्वयक्षैरुपगीयमानः । समाससादासुरसैन्यशत्रूंश्चक्रासिशार्ङ्गायुधशङ्खपाणिः ।। ७.६.
Accompanied by the praises of Siddhas, divine sages, great serpents, Gandharvas, and Yakṣas, he approached the armies of the Asuras and their leaders, bearing discus, sword, bow, and conch in his hands.
सुपर्णपक्षानिलनुन्नपक्षं भ्रमत्पताकं प्रविकीर्णशस्त्रम् । चचाल तद्राक्षसराजसैन्यं चलोपलं नील इवाचलेन्द्रः ।। ७.६.
That army of the Rākṣasa king, its banners whirling, its weapons scattered, and its wings tossed by the wind from Garuḍa’s wings, trembled like a moving blue mountain struck by stones.
ततः शरैः शोणितमांसरूषितैर्युगान्तवैश्वानरतुल्यविग्रहैः । निशाचराः सम्परिवार्य माधवं वरायुधैर्निर्बिभिदुः सहस्रशः ।। ७.६.
Then the night-wandering Rākṣasas, surrounding Mādhava, struck him by thousands with their best weapons and arrows, smeared with blood and flesh, and fierce as the fire of destruction.
नारायणगिरिं ते तु गर्जन्तो राक्षसाम्बुदाः । ववर्षुः शरवर्षेण वर्षेणेवाद्रिमम्बुदाः ।। ७.७.
The Rākṣasas, roaring like clouds, showered volleys of arrows upon the mountain-like Nārāyaṇa, just as clouds pour rain upon a mountain.
श्यामावदातस्तैर्विष्णुर्नीलैर्नक्तञ्चरोत्तमैः । वृतो ऽञ्जनगिरीवासीत् वर्षमाणैः पयोधरैः ।। ७.७.
Surrounded by those foremost of dark and fair-skinned night-wanderers, Viṣṇu stood like a mountain of collyrium encircled by rain-bearing clouds.
शलभा इव केदारं मशका इव पर्वतम् । यथामृतघटं दंशा मकरा इव चार्णवम् ।। ७.७.
Just as locusts swarm a field, mosquitoes a mountain, flies a pot of nectar, or crocodiles the ocean—
तथा रक्षोधनुर्मुक्ता वज्रानिलमनोजवाः । हरिं विशन्ति स्म शरा लोका इव विपर्यये ।। ७.७.
So too did the arrows, released from the bows of the Rākṣasas, swift as the wind and thunderbolt, enter Hari as worlds would at the time of dissolution.
स्यन्दनैः स्यन्दनगता गजैश्च गजपृष्ठगाः । अश्वारोहास्तथाश्वैश्च पादाताश्चाम्बरे स्थिताः ।। ७.७.
Mounted on chariots, elephants, horses, and even standing in the sky, the warriors advanced—charioteers, elephant-riders, horsemen, and foot soldiers alike.
राक्षसेन्द्रा गिरिनिभाः शरैः शक्त्यृष्टितोमरैः । निरुछ्वासं हरिं चक्रुः प्राणायामा इव द्विजम् ।। ७.७.
The Rākṣasa lords, mountain-like in form, assailed Hari with arrows, spears, javelins, and tomaras, making him breathless as a twice-born is by breath-control.
निशाचरैस्ताड्यमानो मीनैरिव महोदधिः । शार्ङ्गमायम्य दुर्धर्षो राक्षसेभ्यो ऽसृजच्छरान् ।। ७.७.
Assailed by the night-wanderers like the great ocean by fish, the indomitable one drew his bow Śārṅga and released arrows at the Rākṣasas.
शरैः पूर्णायतोत्सृष्टैर्वज्रवक्त्रैर्मनोजवैः । चिच्छेद विष्णुर्निशितैः शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः ।। ७.७.
Viṣṇu, with sharp arrows released at full stretch, swift as the mind and hard as thunderbolts, cut down hundreds and thousands of them.
विद्राव्य शरवर्षेण वर्षा वायुरिवोत्थितम् । पाञ्चजन्यं महाशङ्खं प्रदध्मौ पुरुषोत्तमः ।। ७.७.
Driving away the shower of arrows, like the wind disperses a rainstorm, the supreme person blew his great conch, Pāñcajanya.
सो ऽम्बुजो हरिणा ध्मातः सर्वप्राणेन शङ्खराट् । ररास भीमनिर्हादस्त्रैलोक्यं व्यथयन्निव ।। ७.७.
That conch, blown by Hari with all his might, resounded with a terrifying roar, as if shaking the three worlds.
शङ्खराजरवः सो ऽथ त्रासयामास राक्षसान् । मृगराज इवारण्ये समदानिव कुञ्जरान् ।। ७.७.
Then the sound of the conch shell terrified the rākṣasas, like a lion in the forest frightening elephants intoxicated with pride.
न शेकुरश्वाः संस्थातुं विमदाः कुञ्जराभवन् । स्यन्दनेभ्यश्च्युता वीराः शङ्खरावितदुर्बलाः ।। ७.७.
The horses, deprived of their spirit, could not stand firm; they became like elephants, and the warriors, weakened by the sound of the conch, fell from their chariots.
शार्ङ्गचापविनिर्मुक्ता वज्रतुल्याननाः शराः । विदार्य तानि रक्षांसि सुपुङ्खा विविशुः क्षितिम् ।। ७.७.
Arrows released from the Śārṅga bow, their tips like thunderbolts, pierced those rākṣasas and, well-feathered, entered the earth.
भिद्यमानाः शरैः सङ्ख्ये नारायणकरच्युतैः । निपेतू राक्षसा भूमौ शैला वज्रहता इव ।। ७.७.
Struck in battle by arrows loosed from Nārāyaṇa's hand, the rākṣasas fell to the ground like mountains struck by thunderbolts.
व्रणानि परगात्रेभ्यो विष्णुचक्रकृतानि वै । असृक्क्षरन्ति धाराभिः स्वर्णधारा इवाचलाः ।। ७.७.
Wounds made by Viṣṇu's discus on the bodies of the enemy streamed with blood in rivulets, like golden streams on mountains.
शङ्खराजरवश्चापि शार्ङ्गचापरस्वस्तथा । राक्षसानां रवांश्चापि ग्रसते वैष्णवो रवः ।। ७.७.
The sound of the conch, the Śārṅga bow, and other weapons, as well as the cries of the rākṣasas, were all drowned out by the mighty roar of Viṣṇu.
तेषां शिरोधरान्धूताञ्छरध्वजधनूंषि च । रथान्पताकास्तूणीरांश्चिच्छेद स हरिः शरैः ।। ७.७.
With his arrows, Hari cut off their heads, standards, bows, chariots, banners, and quivers.
सूर्यादिव करा घोरा ऊर्मयः सागरादिव । पर्वतादिव नागेन्द्रा धारौघा इव चाम्बुदात् ।। ७.७.
Like the fierce rays of the sun, like waves from the ocean, like mountains shaken by the lord of serpents, or torrents from a raincloud—
तथा शार्ङ्गविनिर्मुक्ताः शरा नारायणेरिताः । निर्धावन्तीषवस्तूर्णं शतशोथ सहस्रशः ।। ७.७.
So too, the arrows released from the Śārṅga bow by Nārāyaṇa rushed forth swiftly, by the hundreds and thousands.
शरभेण यथा सिंहाः सिंहेन द्विरदा यथा । द्विरदेन यथा व्याघ्रा व्याघ्रेण द्वीपिनो यथा ।। ७.७.
As lions are felled by the śarabha, as elephants by lions, as tigers by elephants, and leopards by tigers—
द्वीपिनेव यथा श्वानः शुना मार्जारका यथा । मार्जारेण यथा सर्पाः सर्पेण च यथा ऽ ऽखवः ।। ७.७.
As dogs are felled by leopards, cats by dogs, snakes by cats, and mice by snakes—
तथा ते राक्षसाः सर्वे विष्णुना प्रभविष्णुना । द्रवन्ति द्राविताश्चन्ये शायिताश्च महीतले ।। ७.७.
So too, all those rākṣasas were routed by Viṣṇu, the mighty lord; some fled, driven away, while others lay slain upon the earth.
राक्षसानां सहस्राणि निहत्य मधुसूदनः । वारिजं पूरयामास तोयदं सुरराडिव ।। ७.७.
Having slain thousands of rākṣasas, Madhusūdana filled the field, like the lord of the gods fills a cloud with water.
नारायणशरत्रस्तं शङ्खनादसुविह्वलम् । ययौ लङ्कामभिमुखं प्रभग्नं राक्षसं बलम् ।। ७.७.
The rākṣasa army, shattered, terrified by Nārāyaṇa's arrows and shaken by the sound of the conch, turned toward Laṅkā in flight.
प्रभग्ने राक्षसबले नारायणशराहते । सुमाली शरवर्षेण निववार रणे हरिम् ।। ७.७.
When the rākṣasa army was broken and struck down by Nārāyaṇa's arrows, Sumālī resisted Hari in battle with a shower of arrows.
