संह्रादिः प्रघसश्चैव भासकर्णश्च राक्षसः । राका पुष्पोत्कटा चैव कैकसी च शुचिस्मिता ७.५.
Samhradi, Praghāsa, and the Rakshasa Bhāsakarna; and also Rakā, Pushpotkata, and Kaikasi of pure smile.
मालेस्तु वसुधा नाम गन्धर्वी रूपशालिनी । भार्यासीत्पद्मपत्राक्षी स्वक्षी यक्षीवरोपमा ।। ७.५.
Mali's wife was named Vasudha, a Gandharvi of splendid beauty, with lotus-petal eyes, her own sister, comparable to the foremost Yakshis.
सुमालेरनुजस्तस्यां जनयामास यत् प्रभो । अपत्यं कथ्यमानं तु मया त्वं शृणु राघव ।। ७.५.
Sumali's younger brother begot upon her the offspring, O lord; listen, O Raghava, as I recount them to you.
अनिलश्चानलश्चैव हरः सम्पातिरेव च । एते विभीषणामात्या मालेयास्तु निशाचरः ।। ७.५.
Anila, Anala, Hara, and Sampati—these were the Malyas, ministers of Vibhishana, night-wanderers.
ततस्तु ते राक्षसपुङ्गवास्त्रयो निशाचरैः पुत्रशतैश्च संवृताः । सुरान्सहेन्द्रानृषिनागयक्षान्बबाधिरे तान्बहुवीर्यदर्पिताः ।। ७.५.
Then those three foremost Rakshasas, surrounded by hundreds of Rakshasa sons, assailed the gods, along with Indra, sages, Nagas, and Yakshas, filled with great valor and pride.
जगद्भ्रमन्तो ऽनिलवद्दुरासदा रणेषु मृत्युप्रतिमानतेजसः । वरप्रदानादतिगर्विता भृशं क्रतुक्रियाणां प्रशमङ्कराः सदा ।। ७.५.
Roaming the worlds like the wind, invincible in battle, their brilliance equal to death itself; exceedingly arrogant due to boons received, they always brought destruction to sacrificial rites.
तैर्वध्यमाना देवाश्च ऋषयश्च तपोधनाः । भयार्ताः शरणं जग्मुर्देवदेवं महेश्वरम् ।। ७.६.
Afflicted by them, the gods and ascetic sages, filled with fear, sought refuge with Maheshvara, the god of gods.
जगत्सृष्ट्यन्तकर्तारमजमव्यक्तरूपिणम् । आधारं सर्वलोकानामाराध्यं परमं गुरुम् ।। ७.६.
They approached the unborn, unmanifest Lord, creator and destroyer of the universe, the support of all worlds, the supreme teacher worthy of worship.
ते समेत्य तु कामारिं त्रिपुरारिं त्रिलोचनम् । ऊचुः प्राञ्जलयो देवा भयगद्गदभाषिणः ।। ७.६.
Gathering together, they addressed the enemy of desire, the slayer of Tripura, the three-eyed one, with joined palms, their voices trembling with fear.
सुकेशपुत्रैर्भगवन्पितामहवरोद्धतैः । प्रजाध्यक्ष प्रजाः सर्वा बाध्यन्ते रिपुबाधनैः ।। ७.६.
O Lord, O protector of beings, the sons of Sukesha, emboldened by grandsire's boons, oppress all creatures with their enmity.
शरण्यान्यशरण्यानि ह्याश्रमाणि कृतानि नः । स्वर्गाच्च देवान्प्रच्याव्य स्वर्गे क्रीडन्ति देववत् ।। ७.६.
Our ashrams, once places of refuge, have become unprotected; having driven the gods from heaven, they sport there like gods themselves.
अहं विष्णुरहं रुद्रो ब्रह्माहं देवराडहम् । अहं यमश्च वरुणश्चन्द्रो ऽहं रविरप्यहम् ।। ७.६.
They say: 'I am Vishnu, I am Rudra, I am Brahma, I am the king of gods; I am Yama and Varuna, I am the moon, and I am also the sun.'
इति माली सुमाली च माल्यवांश्चैव राक्षसाः । बाधन्ते समरोद्धर्षा ये च तेषां पुरःसराः । तन्नो देव भयार्तानामभयं दातुमर्हसि ।। ७.६.
Thus Māli, Sumāli, and Mālyavān, the Rakshasas, and their foremost followers, oppress us with their arrogance in battle; O god, you ought to grant us, who are afflicted by fear, your protection.
अशिवं वपुरास्थाय जहि वै देवकण्टकान् ।। ७.६.
Assume an inauspicious form and destroy the thorns among the gods.
धन्ते समरोद्धर्षा ये च तेषां पुरःसराः । इत्युक्तस्तु सुरैः सर्वैः कपर्दी नीललोहितः । सुकेशं प्रति सापेक्षः प्राह देवगणान्प्रभुः ।। ७.६.
Those who, filled with arrogance in battle, lead them—having been thus addressed by all the gods, the matted-haired, blue-red Lord, with regard for Sukeśa, spoke to the host of gods.
अहं तान्न हनिष्यामि मयावध्या हि ते सुराः । किं तु मन्त्रं प्रदास्यामि यो वै तान्निहनिष्यति ।। ७.६.
I will not kill them; they are not to be slain by me, O gods. But I will give you a mantra by which they will be destroyed.
एतमेव समुद्योगं पुरस्कृत्य महर्षयः । गच्छध्वं शरणं विष्णुं हनिष्यति स तान्प्रभुः ।। ७.६.
With this very resolve in mind, you should go, O great sages, and seek refuge in Viṣṇu; that Lord will slay them.
ततस्तु जयशब्देन प्रतिनन्द्य महेश्वरम् । विष्णोः समीपमाजग्मुर्निशाचरभयार्दिताः ।। ७.६.
Then, having saluted Maheśvara with cries of victory, they approached Viṣṇu, afflicted by fear of the night-wanderers.
शङ्खचक्रधरं देवं प्रणम्य बहुमान्य च । ऊचुः सम्भ्रान्तवद्वाक्यं सुकेशतनयान्प्रति ।। ७.६.
Having bowed to the god bearing the conch and discus, and greatly honoring him, they spoke, agitated, words regarding the sons of Sukeśa.
सुकेशतनयैर्देव त्रिभिस्त्रेताग्निसन्निभैः । आक्रम्य वरदानेन स्थानान्यपहृतानि नः ।। ७.६.
By the sons of Sukeśa, three in number and resembling the fires of the Tretā age, our abodes have been seized through the granting of boons.
लङ्का नाम पुरी दुर्गा त्रिकूटशिखरे स्थिता । तत्र स्थिताः प्रबाधन्ते सर्वान्नः क्षणदाचराः ।। ७.६.
There is a city named Laṅkā, a fortress situated atop Trikūṭa peak; there, the night-wanderers residing oppress us all.
स त्वमस्मद्धितार्थाय जहि तान्मधुसूदन । शरणं त्वां वयं प्राप्ता गतिर्भव सुरेश्वर ।। ७.६.
Therefore, for our welfare, slay them, O Madhusūdana; we have come to you for refuge—be our support, Lord of the gods.
चक्रकृत्तास्यकमलान्निवेदय यमाय वै । भयेष्वभयदो ऽस्माकं नान्यो ऽस्ति भवता विना ।। ७.६.
Offer to Yama the lotus faces cut by the discus; in times of fear, you alone grant us safety—there is none besides you.
राक्षसान्समरे दुष्टान्सानुबन्धान्मदोद्धतान् । नुदं त्वं नो भयं देव नीहारमिव भास्करः ।। ७.६.
Drive away for us, O god, the wicked, arrogant, and allied rākṣasas in battle, as the sun dispels mist, removing our fear.
इत्येवं दैवतैरुक्तो देवदेवो जनार्दनः । अभयं भयदो ऽरीणां दत्त्वा देवानुवाच ह ।। ७.६.
Thus addressed by the gods, the god of gods, Janārdana, granted fearlessness to the fearful and then spoke to the gods.
सुकेशं राक्षसं जाने ईशानवरदर्पितम् । तांश्चास्य तनयाञ्जाने येषां ज्येष्ठः स माल्यवान् ।। ७.६.
I know Sukeśa, the rākṣasa, proud from the boon of Īśāna; I also know his sons, whose eldest is Mālyavān.
तानहं समतिक्रान्तमर्यादान्राक्षसाधमान् । निहनिष्यामि सङ्क्रुद्धः सुरा भवत विज्वराः ।। ७.६.
Those wicked rākṣasas who have transgressed the bounds—I will slay them in anger; O gods, be free from anxiety.
इत्युक्तास्ते सुराः सर्वे विष्णुना प्रभविष्णुना । यथावासं ययुर्हृष्टाः प्रशंसन्तो जनार्दनम् ।। ७.६.
Thus addressed by Viṣṇu, the mighty Lord, all the gods departed to their abodes, rejoicing and praising Janārdana.
विबुधानां समुद्योगं माल्यवांस्तु निशाचरः । श्रुत्वा तौ भ्रातरौ वीराविदं वचनमब्रवीत् ।। ७.६.
Mālyavān, the night-wanderer, having heard of the gods' resolve, spoke these words to his two heroic brothers.
अमरा ऋषयश्चैव सङ्गम्य किल शकरम् । अस्मद्वधं परीप्सन्त इदं वचनमब्रुवन् ।। ७.६.
The immortals and sages, having gathered with Śakra, desiring our destruction, spoke these words.
