अस्माकमपि तावत्त्वं गृहं कुरु महामते । हिमवन्तमपाश्रित्य मेरुमन्दरमेव वा । महेश्वरगृहप्रख्यं गृहं नः क्रियतां महत् ।। ७.५.
O greatly wise one, build a house for us as well, on Himavat or Meru or Mandara, a great mansion like that of Maheśvara.
विश्वकर्मा ततस्तेषां राक्षसानां महाभुजः । निवासं कथयामास शक्रस्येवामरावतीम् ।। ७.५.
Then Viśvakarman, mighty-armed, described to those Rākṣasas a dwelling like Amarāvatī, the city of Indra.
दक्षिणस्योदधेस्तीरे त्रिकूटो नाम पर्वतः । सुवेल इति चाप्यन्यो द्वितीयस्तत्र सत्तमाः ।। ७.५.
On the southern shore of the ocean stands a mountain named Trikūṭa, and another, called Suvela, O best of beings.
शिखरे तस्य शैलस्य मध्यमे ऽम्बुदसन्निभे । शकुनैरपि दुष्प्रापे टङ्कच्छिन्नचतुर्दिशि ।। ७.५.
On the middle peak of that mountain, resembling a mass of clouds, inaccessible even to birds, with all sides cut sheer as if by an axe—
त्रिंशद्योजनक्स्तीर्णा शतयोजनमायता । स्वर्णप्राकारसंवीता हेमतोरणसंवृता ।। ७.५.
Thirty yojanas wide, a hundred yojanas long, surrounded by walls of gold and adorned with golden gateways—
मया लङ्केति नगरी शक्राज्ञप्तेन निर्मिता । तस्यां वसत दुर्धर्षा यूयं राक्षसपुङ्गवाः ।। ७.५.
By me, at the command of Śakra, the city called Laṅkā was built; in that city, you mighty Rākṣasas may dwell unassailable.
अमरावतीं समासाद्य सेन्द्रा इव दिवौकसः । लङ्कादुर्गं समासाद्य राक्षसैर्बहुभिर्वृताः ।। ७.५.
Just as the gods with Indra dwell in Amarāvatī, so you, surrounded by many Rākṣasas, may occupy the fortress of Laṅkā.
भविष्यथ दुराधर्षाः शत्रूणां शत्रुसूदनाः ।। ७.५.
You will become invincible to your enemies, destroyers of foes.
विश्वकर्मवचः श्रुत्वा ततस्ते राक्षसोत्तमाः । सहस्रानुचरा भूत्वा गत्वा तामवसन्पुरीम् ।। ७.५.
Hearing Viśvakarman's words, those foremost Rākṣasas, with thousands of followers, went and took up residence in that city.
दृढप्राकारपरिखां हैमैर्गृहशतैर्वृताम् । लङ्कामवाप्य ते हृष्टा न्यवसन्रजनीचराः ।। ७.५.
Reaching Laṅkā, encircled by strong walls and moats and filled with hundreds of golden houses, the delighted night-wanderers settled there.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु यथाकामं च राघव । नर्मदा नाम गन्धर्वी बभूव रघुनन्दन ।। ७.५.
At that very time, O Rāghava, as she wished, a Gandharvī named Narmadā was born, O delight of the Raghus.
तस्याः कान्यात्रयं ह्यासीत् धीश्रीकिर्तिसमद्युति । ज्येष्ठक्रमेण सा तेषां राक्षसानामराक्षसी ।। ७.५.
She had three daughters, radiant with intelligence, beauty, and fame; the eldest among them became a Rākṣasī among the Rākṣasas.
कन्यास्ताः प्रददौ हृष्टा पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननाः । त्रयाणां राक्षसेन्द्राणां तिस्रो गन्धर्वकन्यकाः ।। ७.५.
Those three Gandharva maidens, with faces like full moons, were joyfully given by their mother to three kings of the Rākṣasas.
दत्ता मात्रा महाभागा नक्षत्रे भगदैवते । कुतदारास्तु ते राम सुकेशतनयास्तदा ।। ७.५.
Bestowed by their mother under an auspicious star and divine influence, those noble maidens became the wives of Sukeśa's sons, O Rāma.
चिक्रीडुः सह भार्याभिरप्सरोभिरिवामराः । ततो माल्यवतो भार्या सुन्दरी नाम सुन्दरी ।। ७.५.
With their wives, they sported like the gods with Apsarases; then the wife of Mālyavat, named Sundarī, was indeed beautiful.
स तस्यां जनयामास यदपत्यं निबोध तत् । वज्रमुष्टिर्विरूपाक्षोदुर्मुखश्चैव राक्षसः ।। ७.५.
He begot upon her the following offspring—listen: Vajramushti, Virupaksha, and the Rakshasa Durmukha.
सुप्तघ्नो यज्ञकोपश्च मत्तोन्मत्तौ तथैव च । अनला चाभवत्कन्या सुन्दर्यां राम सुन्दरी ।। ७.५.
Suptaghna, Yajnakopa, and likewise the intoxicated and mad ones; and Analā was born as a daughter to the beautiful Sundari, O Rama.
सुमालिनो ऽपि भार्यासीत्पूर्णचद्रनिभानना । नाम्ना केतुमती राम प्राणेभ्यो ऽपि गरीयसी ।। ७.५.
Sumali's wife was Ketumati, whose face was radiant as the full moon, O Rama, and she was dearer to him than life itself.
सुमाली जनयामास यदपत्यं निशाचरः । केतुमत्यां महाराज तन्निबोधानुपूर्वशः ।। ७.५.
Sumali, the night-wanderer, begot offspring upon Ketumati; O great king, listen to them in order as I recount.
प्रहस्तो ऽकम्पनश्चैव विकटः कालकार्मुखः । धूम्राक्षश्चैव दण्डश्च सुपार्श्वश्च महाबलः ।। ७.५.
Prahasta, Akampana, Vikata, Kalakarmuka, Dhumraksha, Danda, and Supārshva of great might.
संह्रादिः प्रघसश्चैव भासकर्णश्च राक्षसः । राका पुष्पोत्कटा चैव कैकसी च शुचिस्मिता ७.५.
Samhradi, Praghāsa, and the Rakshasa Bhāsakarna; and also Rakā, Pushpotkata, and Kaikasi of pure smile.
मालेस्तु वसुधा नाम गन्धर्वी रूपशालिनी । भार्यासीत्पद्मपत्राक्षी स्वक्षी यक्षीवरोपमा ।। ७.५.
Mali's wife was named Vasudha, a Gandharvi of splendid beauty, with lotus-petal eyes, her own sister, comparable to the foremost Yakshis.
सुमालेरनुजस्तस्यां जनयामास यत् प्रभो । अपत्यं कथ्यमानं तु मया त्वं शृणु राघव ।। ७.५.
Sumali's younger brother begot upon her the offspring, O lord; listen, O Raghava, as I recount them to you.
अनिलश्चानलश्चैव हरः सम्पातिरेव च । एते विभीषणामात्या मालेयास्तु निशाचरः ।। ७.५.
Anila, Anala, Hara, and Sampati—these were the Malyas, ministers of Vibhishana, night-wanderers.
ततस्तु ते राक्षसपुङ्गवास्त्रयो निशाचरैः पुत्रशतैश्च संवृताः । सुरान्सहेन्द्रानृषिनागयक्षान्बबाधिरे तान्बहुवीर्यदर्पिताः ।। ७.५.
Then those three foremost Rakshasas, surrounded by hundreds of Rakshasa sons, assailed the gods, along with Indra, sages, Nagas, and Yakshas, filled with great valor and pride.
जगद्भ्रमन्तो ऽनिलवद्दुरासदा रणेषु मृत्युप्रतिमानतेजसः । वरप्रदानादतिगर्विता भृशं क्रतुक्रियाणां प्रशमङ्कराः सदा ।। ७.५.
Roaming the worlds like the wind, invincible in battle, their brilliance equal to death itself; exceedingly arrogant due to boons received, they always brought destruction to sacrificial rites.
तैर्वध्यमाना देवाश्च ऋषयश्च तपोधनाः । भयार्ताः शरणं जग्मुर्देवदेवं महेश्वरम् ।। ७.६.
Afflicted by them, the gods and ascetic sages, filled with fear, sought refuge with Maheshvara, the god of gods.
जगत्सृष्ट्यन्तकर्तारमजमव्यक्तरूपिणम् । आधारं सर्वलोकानामाराध्यं परमं गुरुम् ।। ७.६.
They approached the unborn, unmanifest Lord, creator and destroyer of the universe, the support of all worlds, the supreme teacher worthy of worship.
ते समेत्य तु कामारिं त्रिपुरारिं त्रिलोचनम् । ऊचुः प्राञ्जलयो देवा भयगद्गदभाषिणः ।। ७.६.
Gathering together, they addressed the enemy of desire, the slayer of Tripura, the three-eyed one, with joined palms, their voices trembling with fear.
सुकेशपुत्रैर्भगवन्पितामहवरोद्धतैः । प्रजाध्यक्ष प्रजाः सर्वा बाध्यन्ते रिपुबाधनैः ।। ७.६.
O Lord, O protector of beings, the sons of Sukesha, emboldened by grandsire's boons, oppress all creatures with their enmity.
