पादुके ते तु रामस्य गृहीत्वा भरतः स्वयम्। चरणाभ्यां नरेन्द्रस्य योजयामास धर्मवित्
Then Bharata himself, versed in righteousness, took Rama’s sandals and placed them at the king’s feet.
अब्रवीच्च तदा रामं भरतः स कृताञ्जलिः। एतत् ते सकलं राज्यं न्यासं निर्यातितं मया
At that moment, Bharata, with joined palms, said to Rama: 'This entire kingdom, entrusted to me, I now return to you.'
अद्य जन्म कृतार्थं मे संवृत्तश्च मनोरथः। यत् त्वां पश्यामि राजानमयोध्यां पुनरागतम्
Today my birth has found fulfillment and my heart’s desire is realized, for I see you, the king, returned to Ayodhya.
अवेक्षतां भवान् कोशं कोष्ठागारं गृहं बलम्। भवतस्तेजसा सर्वं कृतं दशगुणं मया
May you inspect the treasury, the storehouses, the palace, and the army; by your power, I have increased everything tenfold.
तथा ब्रुवाणं भरतं दृष्ट्वा तं भ्रातृवत्सलम्। मुमुचुर्वानरा बाष्पं राक्षसश्च विभीषणः
Seeing Bharata speak thus, filled with brotherly love, the Vanaras shed tears, and so did Vibhishana, the Rakshasa.
ततः प्रहर्षाद् भरतमङ्कमारोप्य राघवः। ययौ तेन विमानेन ससैन्यो भरताश्रमम्
Then, out of great joy, Raghava lifted Bharata onto his lap and, with his army, went in that aerial chariot to Bharata’s hermitage.
भरताश्रममासाद्य ससैन्यो राघवस्तदा। अवतीर्य विमानाग्रादवतस्थे महीतले
Arriving at Bharata’s hermitage with his army, Raghava then descended from the foremost aerial chariot and stood upon the earth.
अब्रवीत् तु तदा रामस्तद् विमानमनुत्तमम्। वह वैश्रवणं देवमनुजानामि गम्यताम्
At that time, Rama spoke to that excellent aerial chariot: 'Carry Lord Vaishravana; I permit you to depart.'
ततो रामाभ्यनुज्ञातं तद् विमानमनुत्तमम्। उत्तरां दिशमुद्दिश्य जगाम धनदालयम्
Thus permitted by Rama, that unrivaled aerial chariot set out toward the northern direction, heading to the abode of the Lord of Wealth.
विमानं पुष्पकं दिव्यं संगृहीतं तु रक्षसा। अगमद् धनदं वेगाद् रामवाक्यप्रचोदितम्
The divine Pushpaka chariot, which had been seized by the demon, swiftly went to Kubera, prompted by Rama's command.
पुरोहितस्यात्मसखस्य राघवो बृहस्पतेः शक्र इवामराधिपः। निपीड्य पादौ पृथगासने शुभे सहैव तेनोपविवेश वीर्यवान्
Raghava, like Indra the lord of the gods with Brihaspati his priest and friend, respectfully pressed the feet of his own priest and companion, and then, together with him, sat down on a separate, splendid seat, full of strength.

Hear now the one hundred and twenty-eighth sarga, the auspicious benediction, in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa.
शिरस्यञ्जलिमाधाय कैकेय्यानन्दवर्धनः। बभाषे भरतो ज्येष्ठं रामं सत्यपराक्रमम्
Bharata, who increased the joy of Kaikeyi, placed his joined palms upon his head and spoke to his elder brother Rama, whose valor was true.
पूजिता मामिका माता दत्तं राज्यमिदं मम। तद् ददामि पुनस्तुभ्यं यथा त्वमददा मम
My mother has been honored, and this kingdom has been given to me; now I return it to you again, just as you once gave it to me.
धुरमेकाकिना न्यस्तां वृषभेण बलीयसा। किशोरवद् गुरुं भारं न वोढुमहमुत्सहे
A heavy yoke placed on a single, strong bull—like a calf, I am unable to bear such a great burden.
वारिवेगेन महता भिन्नः सेतुरिव क्षरन्। दुर्बन्धनमिदं मन्ये राज्यच्छिद्रमसंवृतम्
Like a dam broken by a great flood, I consider this kingdom to be weakly bound, with its cracks unsealed.
गतिं खर इवाश्वस्य हंसस्येव च वायसः। नान्वेतुमुत्सहे वीर तव मार्गमरिंदम
Just as a crow cannot follow the path of a horse or a swan, O hero, subduer of foes, I am unable to follow your way.
यथा चारोपितो वृक्षो जातश्चान्तर्निवेशने। महानपि दुरारोहो महास्कन्धः प्रशाखवान्
As a tree planted within a house, though large, hard to climb, with great branches, grows up—
शीर्येत पुष्पितो भूत्वा न फलानि प्रदर्शयन्। तस्य नानुभवेदर्थं यस्य हेतोः स रोपितः
—yet after flowering, withers without bearing fruit; its purpose is not fulfilled for the one who planted it.
एषोपमा महाबाहो त्वमर्थं वेत्तुमर्हसि। यद्यस्मान् मनुजेन्द्र त्वं भर्ता भृत्यान् न शाधि हि
This is the analogy, O mighty-armed one; you should understand its meaning. O king of men, if you are our lord, do not rule your servants through us.
जगदद्याभिषिक्तं त्वामनुपश्यतु राघव। प्रतपन्तमिवादित्यं मध्याह्ने दीप्ततेजसम्
Let the world today behold you, O Raghava, anointed, shining with blazing splendor like the sun at noon.
तूर्यसंघातनिर्घोषैः काञ्चीनूपुरनिःस्वनैः। मधुरैर्गीतशब्दैश्च प्रतिबुध्यस्व शेष्व च
Awaken and rest to the sounds of drums and musical instruments, the jingling of golden anklets, and the sweet notes of songs.
यावदावर्तते चक्रं यावती च वसुंधरा। तावत् त्वमिह लोकस्य स्वामित्वमनुवर्तय
As long as the wheel turns and as long as the earth endures, so long should you maintain lordship over this world here.
भरतस्य वचः श्रुत्वा रामः परपुरञ्जयः। तथेति प्रतिजग्राह निषसादासने शुभे
Hearing Bharata's words, Rama, conqueror of enemy cities, accepted them with 'so be it,' and sat down on the splendid seat.
ततः शत्रुघ्नवचनान्निपुणाः श्मश्रुवर्धनाः। सुखहस्ताः सुशीघ्राश्च राघवं पर्यवारयन्
Then, at Shatrughna's word, skilled barbers, gentle-handed and swift, surrounded Raghava.
पूर्वं तु भरते स्नाते लक्ष्मणे च महाबले। सुग्रीवे वानरेन्द्रे च राक्षसेन्द्रे विभीषणे
First, after Bharata had bathed, and mighty Lakshmana, and Sugriva the king of the monkeys, and Vibhishana the king of the rakshasas—
विशोधितजटः स्नातश्चित्रमाल्यानुलेपनः। महार्हवसनोपेतस्तस्थौ तत्र श्रिया ज्वलन्
Rama, with his matted locks cleansed, bathed, adorned with varied garlands and unguents, and clad in splendid garments, stood there shining with majesty.
प्रतिकर्म च रामस्य कारयामास वीर्यवान्। लक्ष्मणस्य च लक्ष्मीवानिक्ष्वाकुकुलवर्धनः
The valiant enhancer of the Ikshvaku lineage arranged ceremonial adornment for Rama and Lakshmana, both radiant with fortune.
प्रतिकर्म च सीतायाः सर्वा दशरथस्त्रियः। आत्मनैव तदा चक्रुर्मनस्विन्यो मनोहरम्
All the wives of Dasharatha, noble-minded and graceful, themselves prepared Sita’s ceremonial adornment, making it delightful.
ततो वानरपत्नीनां सर्वासामेव शोभनम्। चकार यत्नात् कौसल्या प्रहृष्टा पुत्रवत्सला
Then Kausalya, joyful and affectionate toward her son, carefully adorned all the wives of the vanaras, making them splendid.
