प्रजाश्च बहुसाहस्रीः स्फीताञ्जनपदानपि। स गत्वा दूरमध्वानं त्वरितः कपिकुञ्जरः
He saw multitudes of people in their thousands, prosperous lands and villages; and having traveled a long distance swiftly, the foremost of monkeys,
आससाद द्रुमान् फुल्लान् नन्दिग्रामसमीपगान्। सुराधिपस्योपवने यथा चैत्ररथे द्रुमान्
Reached the blossoming trees near Nandigrama, like the trees in the pleasure grove of the lord of gods, or those in Caitraratha.
स्त्रीभिः सपुत्रैः पौत्रैश्च रममाणैः स्वलंकृतैः। क्रोशमात्रे त्वयोध्यायाश्चीरकृष्णाजिनाम्बरम्
There, within a krośa of Ayodhya, he saw women with their sons and grandsons, adorned and rejoicing, and
ददर्श भरतं दीनं कृशमाश्रमवासिनम्। जटिलं मलदिग्धाङ्गं भ्रातृव्यसनकर्शितम्
He saw Bharata, emaciated and sorrowful, dwelling in ascetic discipline, with matted hair, body smeared with dirt, worn by his brother's misfortune.
फलमूलाशिनं दान्तं तापसं धर्मचारिणम्। समुन्नतजटाभारं वल्कलाजिनवाससम्
Eating only fruits and roots, self-controlled, a sage devoted to righteousness, with matted locks piled high, clad in bark and black antelope skin.
नियतं भावितात्मानं ब्रह्मर्षिसमतेजसम्। पादुके ते पुरस्कृत्य प्रशासन्तं वसुंधराम्
Disciplined, with a purified mind, equal in brilliance to a brahmarshi, ruling the earth with the sandals set before him.
चातुर्वर्ण्यस्य लोकस्य त्रातारं सर्वतो भयात्। उपस्थितममात्यैश्च शुचिभिश्च पुरोहितैः
Protector of the fourfold order of the world from every danger, attended by ministers and pure-minded priests.
बलमुख्यैश्च युक्तैश्च काषायाम्बरधारिभिः। नहि ते राजपुत्रं तं चीरकृष्णाजिनाम्बरम्
And by chief warriors, equipped and clad in ochre garments; yet the citizens, devoted to righteousness, did not wish to enjoy the prince,
परिभोक्तुं व्यवस्यन्ति पौरा वै धर्मवत्सलाः। तं धर्ममिव धर्मज्ञं देहबन्धमिवापरम्
That prince, clad in bark and black antelope skin; they cherished him as the embodiment of dharma, as one cherishes the body as the seat of the self.
उवाच प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं हनूमान् मारुतात्मजः। वसन्तं दण्डकारण्ये यं त्वं चीरजटाधरम्
Hanuman, son of the Wind, with joined palms, spoke these words: 'The one whom you grieve for, dwelling in Dandaka forest, clad in bark and matted hair—'
अनुशोचसि काकुत्स्थं स त्वां कौशलमब्रवीत्। प्रियमाख्यामि ते देव शोकं त्यज सुदारुणम्
'You mourn for Kakutstha, but he has sent you his well-wishes. I bring you joyful news, lord; cast off your terrible grief.'
अस्मिन् मुहूर्ते भ्रात्रा त्वं रामेण सह संगतः। निहत्य रावणं रामः प्रतिलभ्य च मैथिलीम्
'In this very moment, you will be reunited with your brother Rama, who, having slain Ravana and regained Maithili—'
उपयाति समृद्धार्थः सह मित्रैर्महाबलैः। लक्ष्मणश्च महातेजा वैदेही च यशस्विनी। सीता समग्रा रामेण महेन्द्रेण शची यथा
'Now approaches, his purpose fulfilled, together with his mighty friends; Lakshmana of great splendor, and illustrious Vaidehi—Sita, complete with Rama as Śacī is with Mahendra.'
एवमुक्तो हनुमता भरतः कैकयीसुतः। पपात सहसा हृष्टो हर्षान्मोहमुपागमत्
Thus addressed by Hanuman, Bharata, son of Kaikeyi, suddenly fell to the ground, overjoyed, and fainted from happiness.
ततो मुहूर्तादुत्थाय प्रत्याश्वस्य च राघवः। हनूमन्तमुवाचेदं भरतः प्रियवादिनम्
Then, after a moment, Raghava's brother arose, regained his composure, and spoke these words to Hanuman, who spoke kindly.
अशोकजैः प्रीतिमयैः कपिमालिङ्ग्य सम्भ्रमात्। सिषेच भरतः श्रीमान् विपुलैरश्रुबिन्दुभिः
Bharata, radiant with fortune, embraced the monkey in his excitement, and drenched him with abundant tears of joy springing from relief.
देवो वा मानुषो वा त्वमनुक्रोशादिहागतः। प्रियाख्यानस्य ते सौम्य ददामि ब्रुवतः प्रियम्
Whether you are a god or a human, you have come here out of compassion; gentle one, for bringing this joyful news, I grant you a worthy reward.
गवां शतसहस्रं च ग्रामाणां च शतं परम्। सकुण्डलाः शुभाचारा भार्याः कन्यास्तु षोडश
A hundred thousand cows, a hundred excellent villages, and sixteen maidens adorned with earrings and of noble conduct, I bestow upon you.
हेमवर्णाः सुनासोरूः शशिसौम्याननाः स्त्रियः। सर्वाभरणसम्पन्नाः सम्पन्नाः कुलजातिभिः
Women golden in complexion, with fine noses and gentle moon-like faces, adorned with every ornament and born of noble families, are yours.
निशम्य रामागमनं नृपात्मजः कपिप्रवीरस्य तदाद्भुतोपमम्। प्रहर्षितो रामदिदृक्षयाभवत् पुनश्च हर्षादिदमब्रवीद् वचः
Hearing of Rama's return, the prince, filled with wonder at the monkey hero's marvelous tidings, was overcome with joy and, longing to see Rama, again spoke these words out of delight.

बहूनि नाम वर्षाणि गतस्य सुमहद्वनम्। शृणोम्यहं प्रीतिकरं मम नाथस्य कीर्तनम्
For many years, since he went to the great forest, I have longed to hear joyful news of my lord's fame.
कल्याणी बत गाथेयं लौकिकी प्रतिभाति माम्। एति जीवन्तमानन्दो नरं वर्षशतादपि
Truly, this ancient saying appears blessed to me: 'The joy of seeing a loved one alive surpasses even a hundred years.'
राघवस्य हरीणां च कथमासीत् समागमः। कस्मिन् देशे किमाश्रित्य तत्त्वमाख्याहि पृच्छतः
How did the meeting of Raghava and the monkeys take place? In what land, and under what circumstances? Tell me the truth as I ask.
स पृष्टो राजपुत्रेण बृस्यां समुपवेशितः। आचचक्षे ततः सर्वं रामस्य चरितं वने
Thus questioned by the prince and seated on a fine seat, Hanuman then recounted all of Rama's deeds in the forest.
यथा प्रव्राजितो रामो मातुर्दत्तौ वरौ तव। यथा च पुत्रशोकेन राजा दशरथो मृतः
He told how Rama was exiled because of the two boons granted to your mother, and how King Dasharatha died from grief for his son.
यथा दूतैस्त्वमानीतस्तूर्णं राजगृहात् प्रभो। त्वयायोध्यां प्रविष्टेन यथा राज्यं न चेप्सितम्
He told how you, lord, were summoned swiftly from the royal palace by messengers, and how, upon entering Ayodhya, you did not desire the kingdom.
चित्रकूटगिरिं गत्वा राज्येनामित्रकर्शनः। निमन्त्रितस्त्वया भ्राता धर्ममाचरता सताम्
He told how, after going to Chitrakuta mountain, you, destroyer of foes, invited your brother, who was steadfast in righteousness, to accept the kingdom.
स्थितेन राज्ञो वचने यथा राज्यं विसर्जितम्। आर्यस्य पादुके गृह्य यथासि पुनरागतः
He told how, by obeying the king's command, you renounced the kingdom, and, taking the noble one's sandals, returned again.
सर्वमेतन्महाबाहो यथावद् विदितं तव। त्वयि प्रतिप्रयाते तु यद् वृत्तं तन्निबोध मे
All this, mighty-armed one, is already known to you; now hear from me what happened after you departed.
