Hear now the one hundred seventeenth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Book of War.
ततो हि दुर्मना रामः श्रुत्वैवं वदतां गिरः । दध्यौ मुहूर्तं धर्मात्मा बाष्पव्याकुललोचनः
Then, troubled in mind, Rāma, hearing those words spoken, pondered for a moment, his eyes filled with tears.
ततो वैश्रवणो राजा यमश्च पितृभिः सह । सहस्राक्षश्च देवेशो वरुणश्च जलेश्वरः
Then King Vaiśravaṇa, Yama with his ancestors, Indra the lord of the gods, and Varuṇa the lord of waters,
षडर्धनयनः श्रीमान्महादेवो वृषध्वजः । कर्ता सर्वस्य लोकस्य ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मविदां वरः
The glorious Mahādeva, the bull-bannered, with three eyes, and Brahmā, the creator of all worlds, foremost among knowers of Brahman,
एते सर्वे समागम्य विमानैः सूर्यसन्निभैः । आगम्य नगरीं लङ्काम् अभिजग्मुश्च राघवम्
All these, assembling together, arrived in chariots shining like the sun, and came to the city of Lanka, approaching Rāghava.
ततः सहस्ताभरणान् प्रगृह्य विपुलान् भुजान् । अब्रुवंस्त्रिदशश्रैष्ठाः प्राञ्जलिं राघवं स्थितम्
Then, adorned with a thousand ornaments, bearing mighty arms, the foremost of the gods spoke to Rāghava, who stood with joined palms.
कर्ता सर्वस्य लोकस्य श्रेष्ठो ज्ञानविदां विभुः । उपेक्षसे कथं सीताम् पतन्तीं हव्यवाहने
O creator and lord of all worlds, greatest among those who know wisdom, how do you neglect Sītā as she falls into the sacrificial fire?
कथं देवगणश्रेष्ठम् आत्मानं नावबुध्यसे । ऋतधामा वसुः पूर्वम् वसूनां त्वं प्रजापतिः
How do you not recognize yourself as the foremost among the hosts of gods? You are Vasu, the upholder of truth, the ancient lord of the Vasus, the progenitor.
त्रयाणां त्वं हि लोकानाम् आदिकर्ता स्वयंप्रभु: । रुद्राणामष्टमो रुद्रः साध्यानामसि पञ्चमः । अश्विनौ चापि ते कर्णौ चन्द्रसूर्यौ च चक्षुषी
You are indeed the original creator and sovereign of the three worlds; the eighth Rudra among the Rudras, the fifth among the Sādhyas; the Ashvins are your ears, the moon and sun your eyes.
अन्ते चादौ च लोकानाम् दृश्यसे त्वं परन्तप । उपेक्षसे च वैदेहीम् मानुषः प्राकृतो यथा
At the end and at the beginning of worlds, you are seen, O scorcher of foes; yet you disregard Vaidehī as if you were an ordinary mortal.
इत्युक्तो लोकपालैस्तैः स्वामी लोकस्य राघवः । अब्रवीत्रिदशश्रेष्ठान् रामो धर्मभृतां वरः
Thus addressed by the guardians of the worlds, Rāghava, lord of all, replied to the foremost of the gods, Rāma, best among upholders of dharma.
आत्मानं मानुषं मन्ये रामं दशरथात्मजम् । योऽहं यस्य यतश्चाहम् भगवांस्तद् ब्रवीतु मे
I consider myself a man, Rāma, son of Daśaratha; whoever I am, whatever I am, let the blessed one declare it to me.
इति ब्रुवन्तं काकुत्स्थम् ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मविदां वरः । अब्रवीच्छृणु मे राम सत्यं सत्यपराक्रम
As Kākutstha spoke thus, Brahmā, foremost among knowers of Brahman, said: 'Hear me, Rāma, whose valor is truth itself.'
भवान् नारायणो देवः श्रीमांश्चक्रायुधः प्रभुः। एकशृङ्गो वराहस्त्वम् भूतभव्यसपत्नजित्
You are Nārāyaṇa, the divine lord, glorious, wielder of the discus; you are the one-horned boar, conqueror of past, future, and enemies.
अक्षरं ब्रह्म सत्यं च मध्ये चान्ते च राघव । लोकानां त्वं परो धर्मो विष्वक्सेनश्चतुर्भुजः
You are the imperishable Brahman, the truth, in the middle and at the end, O Rāghava; you are the supreme dharma of the worlds, Viṣvaksena, four-armed.
शार्ङ्गधन्वा हृषीकेशः पुरुषः पुरुषोत्तमः । अजितः खड्गधृद्विष्णुः कृष्णश्चैव बृहद्बलः
You are the wielder of Śārṅga, Hṛṣīkeśa, the Supreme Person, the Unconquered, the sword-bearing Viṣṇu, Kṛṣṇa, and Bṛhadbala.
सेनानीर्ग्रामणीश्च त्वम् बुद्धिः सत्त्वं क्षमा दमः । प्रभवश्चाप्ययश्च त्वम् उपेन्द्रो मधुसूदनः
You are the commander, the leader, intelligence, virtue, forbearance, self-control, origin and dissolution; you are Upendra, the slayer of Madhu.
इन्द्रकर्मा महेन्द्रस्त्वम् पद्मनाभो रणान्तकृत् । शरण्यं शरणं च त्वाम् आहुर्दिव्या महर्षयः
You are the doer of Indra's deeds, Mahendra, Padmanābha, the destroyer in battle; the divine sages call you the refuge and the shelter.
सहस्रशृङ्गो वेदात्मा शतशीर्षो महर्षभः । त्वं त्रयाणां हि लोकानाम् आदिकर्ता स्वयम्प्रभुः
You are the thousand-horned, the essence of the Vedas, the hundred-headed, the great bull; you are indeed the original creator and sovereign of the three worlds.
सिद्धानामपि साध्यानाम् आश्रयश्चासि पूर्वजः । त्वं यज्ञस्त्वं वषट्कारः त्वमोङ्कारः परात्परः
You are the support and the ancient one even for the Siddhas and Sādhyas; you are the sacrifice, the vaṣaṭ-call, the syllable Oṃ, the supreme beyond the highest.
प्रभवं निधनं वा ते नो विदुः को भवानिति । दृश्यसे सर्वभूतेषु ब्राह्मणेषु च गोषु च । दिक्षु सर्वासु गगने पर्वतेषु वनेषु च
No one knows your origin or end, or who you are; you are seen in all beings, in Brāhmaṇas, in cows, in all directions, in the sky, on mountains, and in forests.
सहस्रचरणः श्रीमान् शतशीर्षः सहस्रदृक् । त्वं धारयसि भूतानि पृथिवीं च सपर्वताम्
You are the illustrious one with a thousand feet, a hundred heads, a thousand eyes; you sustain all beings and the earth with its mountains.
अन्ते पृथिव्याः सलिले दृश्यसे त्वं महोरगः । त्रीन् लोकान् धारयन् राम देवगन्धर्वदानवान्
At the end of the earth, in the waters, you are seen as the great serpent, upholding the three worlds, O Rāma, with gods, Gandharvas, and Dānavas.
अहं ते हृदयं राम जिह्वा देवी सरस्वती । देवा गात्रेषु रोमाणि ब्रह्मणा निर्मिताः प्रभो
I am your heart, O Rāma; the goddess Sarasvatī is your tongue; the gods are the hairs on your body, created by Brahmā, O Lord.
निमेषस्ते स्मृता रात्रिः उन्मेषस्ते भवेद्दिवा । संस्कारास्तेऽभवन् वेदा न तदस्ति त्वया विना ॥
Your closing of the eyes is called night, your opening is day; the Vedas are your sacred rites—nothing exists apart from you.
जगत् सर्वं शरीरं ते स्थैर्यं ते वसुधातलम् । अग्निः कोपः प्रसादस्ते सोमः श्रीवत्सलक्षणः
The whole universe is your body, the earth's firmness is yours; fire is your wrath, the moon your favor, and the mark Śrīvatsa your sign.
त्वया लोकास्त्रयः क्रान्ताः पुरा स्वैर्विक्रमैस्त्रिभिः । महेन्द्रश्च कृतो राजा बलिं बद्ध्वा सुदारुणम्
By your three strides, you once traversed the three worlds; having bound the fierce Bali, you made Mahendra king.
यत् परं श्रूयते ज्योतिर्यत् परं श्रूयते तमः । यत् परं परतश्चैव परमात्मेति कथ्यसे
That which is called the highest light, that which is called the highest darkness, and that which is beyond the highest—you are spoken of as the Supreme Self.
परमाख्यं पर यच्च त्वमेव परिगीयसे । स्थित्युत्पत्ति विनाशानां त्वामाहुः परमां गतिं
You alone are praised as the Supreme, as the one called Supreme; you are said to be the highest goal in creation, sustenance, and dissolution.
सीता लक्ष्मीर्भवान् विष्णुः देवः कृष्णः प्रजापतिः । वधार्थं रावणस्येह प्रविष्टो मानुषीं तनुम्
You are Sītā, Lakṣmī, Viṣṇu, the god Kṛṣṇa, Prajāpati; for the destruction of Rāvaṇa you have entered a human form here.
