Therefore, let the palanquin be set aside, and let her approach on foot; let these forest-dwellers see Vaidehī near me.
Thus addressed by Rāma, Vibhīṣaṇa, reflecting, brought Sītā respectfully into Rāma's presence.
Then Lakṣmaṇa, Sugrīva, and Hanumān the monkey, hearing Rāma's words, became greatly distressed.
From his harsh gestures and disregard for his wife, they suspected that Rāghava was displeased with Sītā.
Maithilī, shrinking with shame into herself, followed Vibhīṣaṇa and approached her husband.
Out of wonder, joy, and affection for her husband, the devoted one gazed at her husband's gentle face, her own countenance even gentler.
Then, seeing the beloved face she had not seen for so long, she cast off the weariness of her heart; her radiant face shone like the full, spotless moon.
Listen now to the one hundred fifteenth sarga of the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa.
Seeing Maithilī standing humbly at his side, Rāma began to speak the feelings hidden in his heart.
O noble lady, you have been rescued after the enemy was defeated in battle; what a man must do, I have accomplished.
I have reached the end of my anger; the outrage has been wiped away; both the insult and the enemy have been destroyed by me at once.
Today my valor has been proven, today my effort has borne fruit; today I have fulfilled my vow and I am master of myself.
You, who were taken away by the fickle-minded demon, were separated from me; the misfortune wrought by fate has been overcome by my human effort.
Who, having suffered dishonor, does not wipe it away by his own brilliance? Of what use is the manliness of a great man with a small mind?
The crossing of the ocean and the crushing of Lanka—Hanuman’s deeds have today borne fruit and are truly praiseworthy.
The effort of Sugriva and his army, who fought bravely in battle and gave wise counsel, has today borne fruit.
Likewise, the effort of Vibhishana has today borne fruit, who, abandoning his wicked brother, came to me of his own accord.
Hearing these words of Rama, Sita, her eyes wide like a startled deer, was filled with tears.
As Rama gazed upon her, his beloved standing near, his heart was torn in two by fear of public reproach.
He spoke to Sita, whose eyes were like lotus petals and hair dark and curled, she of lovely form, in the midst of the monkeys and rakshasas.
What a man must do to wipe away dishonor has been done by me, who sought honor, by slaying Ravana.
Just as the southern quarter, once unconquerable, was subdued by Agastya through his austerity and purified soul, so have I conquered the world of living beings.
Let it be known to you, O blessed one, that this toil in battle has been endured by me for the sake of my friends’ valor, not for your sake.
By me, who has maintained proper conduct and wiped away all reproach, the blemish upon my renowned lineage has been removed.
You, standing before me, whose character is now in doubt, are to me as a lamp is to one whose eyes are diseased—truly adverse and painful.
Therefore, go as you wish today, O daughter of Janaka; these ten directions are open to you, for I have no further use for you.
What man born in a noble family, even if powerful, would take back a woman who has lived in another’s house, out of attachment to friends?
You, who were tormented in Ravana’s lap and seen with a wicked gaze—how could I take you back, claiming a great lineage?
The purpose for which you were recovered by me has been achieved; I have no attachment to you—go wherever you wish.
So today, O blessed one, I have spoken this with a resolved mind; set your heart, as you wish, on Lakshmana or Bharata.
