Having witnessed Rāvaṇa's slaying, the gods, gandharvas, and dānavas departed in their respective aerial vehicles, recounting auspicious tales.
They spoke of Rāvaṇa's dreadful death, Rāghava's valor, the excellent battle of the monkeys, and Sugrīva's counsel.
They spoke of the affection and strength of Hanuman and Lakṣmaṇa, Sītā's fidelity, and Hanuman's prowess.
Speaking thus, those blessed ones departed joyfully as they had come; meanwhile, Rāghava approached the divine chariot, radiant as a peacock, given by Indra.
The mighty-armed Rāghava, having taken leave, honored Mātaḷi; Mātaḷi, Indra's charioteer, was permitted by Rāghava.
Mounting that divine chariot, Mātaḷi ascended to heaven; when the charioteer had gone to heaven, the best among charioteers,
Rāghava, filled with supreme delight, embraced Sugrīva; and after embracing Sugrīva, he was greeted by Lakṣmaṇa.
Honored by the hosts of monkeys, he arrived at the stronghold of the army; then the descendant of Kakutstha spoke to those gathered nearby.
He said to Saumitri, the virtuous and radiant Lakṣmaṇa: 'O gentle one, anoint this Vibhīṣaṇa as king in Laṅkā.'
'He is devoted, loyal, and has previously rendered service; this is my highest wish, that I may see this brother of Rāvaṇa'
'anointed as king in Laṅkā, O gentle one.' Thus addressed by the great-souled Rāghava,
Saumitri, delighted, replied, 'So be it,' and took up a golden vessel; Hanuman, swift as thought, placed that vessel in the hands of the monkey chiefs.
He directed the great-hearted monkeys to fetch water from the ocean; then, moving very swiftly, those monkeys departed.
The foremost monkeys returned, having brought water from the ocean; then, taking a single vessel, they placed it upon the highest seat.
With that vessel, Saumitri anointed Vibhīṣaṇa as king in Laṅkā, in the midst of the rākṣasas, by Rāma's command.
Then, according to the prescribed rite seen in the mantras, with a gathering of friends surrounding him, all the Rākṣasas and also the Vānaras anointed him.
Having attained incomparable joy, they praised only Rāma; his ministers rejoiced, as did those Rākṣasas who were devoted to him.
Seeing Vibhīṣaṇa, the lord of the Rākṣasas, anointed in Laṅkā, Rāghava, together with Lakṣmaṇa, felt supreme delight.
Vibhīṣaṇa, having obtained that great kingdom granted by Rāma, comforted the citizens and then approached Rāma.
The delighted citizens of Laṅkā, the night-dwelling Rākṣasas, joyfully brought him curds, unbroken rice, sweetmeats, and flowers.
He, the mighty one, received them and presented all those auspicious offerings to Rāghava and also to the valiant Lakṣmaṇa.
Seeing Vibhīṣaṇa, his task accomplished and his purpose fulfilled, Rāma accepted all those gifts, just as Vibhīṣaṇa wished.
Then Rāma spoke these words to Hanumān, the monkey, who stood before him, hands joined, bowing, like a mountain in strength.
Having taken leave of this great king, gentle Vibhīṣaṇa, enter the city of Laṅkā and convey my well-being to Sītā.
O best of speakers, tell Vaidehī of my welfare, and that of Sugrīva and Lakṣmaṇa, and also that Rāvaṇa has been slain in battle.
O lord of the monkeys, tell this pleasing news to Vaidehī, and after delivering the message, you should return.

Thus instructed, Hanumān, son of the Wind, entered the city of Laṅkā, being honored by the night-dwelling Rākṣasas.
Entering the city of Laṅkā and having taken leave of Vibhīṣaṇa, Hanumān, with his permission, went to the grove of trees.
Entering properly, the monkey, known to Sītā, saw her deprived of joy, anxious, like the star Rohiṇī bereft of the moon.
