वार्यमाणाः सुबहुशो वेष्टन्त्यः क्षितिपांसुषु। विमुक्तकेश्यः शोकार्ता गावो वत्सहता इव
Though repeatedly restrained, they rolled upon the earth's dust, their hair disheveled, afflicted by sorrow, like cows bereft of their calves.
उत्तरेण विनिष्क्रम्य द्वारेण सह राक्षसैः। प्रविश्यायोधनं घोरं विचिन्वन्त्यो हतं पतिम्
Exiting by the northern gate with the demons, they entered the dreadful battlefield, searching for their slain husband.
आर्यपुत्रेति वादिन्यो हा नाथेति च सर्वशः। परिपेतुः कबन्धाङ्कां महीं शोणितकर्दमाम्
Crying 'O noble prince!' and 'Alas, our protector!' everywhere, they fell upon the blood-soaked, mud-stained earth, embracing his corpse.
ता बाष्पपरिपूर्णाक्ष्यो भर्तृशोकपराजिताः। करिण्य इव नर्दन्त्यः करेण्वो हतयूथपाः
Their eyes filled with tears, overcome by grief for their husband, they wailed like she-elephants whose leader has been slain.
ददृशुस्ता महाकायं महावीर्यं महाद्युतिम्। रावणं निहतं भूमौ नीलाञ्जनचयोपमम्
They saw Ravana, of immense body, great valor, and radiant splendor, lying slain on the ground, resembling a heap of dark collyrium.
ताः पतिं सहसा दृष्ट्वा शयानं रणपांसुषु। निपेतुस्तस्य गात्रेषु च्छिन्ना वनलता इव
Suddenly seeing their husband lying in the dust of battle, they fell upon his limbs like severed forest creepers.
बहुमानात् परिष्वज्य काचिदेनं रुरोद ह। चरणौ काचिदालम्ब्य काचित् कण्ठेऽवलम्ब्य च
Out of deep affection, one embraced him and wept; another clung to his feet, and another held fast to his neck.
उत्क्षिप्य च भुजौ काचिद् भूमौ सुपरिवर्तते। हतस्य वदनं दृष्ट्वा काचिन्मोहमुपागमत्
One, raising her arms, rolled upon the ground; seeing his lifeless face, another fell into a swoon.
काचिदङ्के शिरः कृत्वा रुरोद मुखमीक्षती। स्नापयन्ती मुखं बाष्पैस्तुषारैरिव पङ्कजम्
One placed his head on her lap, gazing at his face and weeping, bathing it with tears like dewdrops upon a lotus.
एवमार्ताः पतिं दृष्ट्वा रावणं निहतं भुवि। चुक्रुशुर्बहुधा शोकाद् भूयस्ताः पर्यदेवयन्
Thus, tormented, seeing Ravana slain upon the earth, they cried out in many ways from grief and lamented all the more.
येन वित्रासितः शक्रो येन वित्रासितो यमः। येन वैश्रवणो राजा पुष्पकेण वियोजितः
He who terrified Indra, he who terrified Yama, he who deprived King Kubera of the Pushpaka chariot—
गन्धर्वाणामृषीणां च सुराणां च महात्मनाम्। भयं येन रणे दत्तं सोऽयं शेते रणे हतः
He who brought fear in battle to the Gandharvas, the sages, and the great gods—now lies slain on the battlefield.
असुरेभ्यः सुरेभ्यो वा पन्नगेभ्योऽपि वा तथा। भयं यो न विजानाति तस्येदं मानुषाद् भयम्
He who knew no fear from asuras, gods, or even serpents—this is the fear he has met from a mortal.
अवध्यो देवतानां यस्तथा दानवरक्षसाम्। हतः सोऽयं रणे शेते मानुषेण पदातिना
He who was invulnerable to the gods and to the foremost of demons and rākṣasas—now lies slain in battle by a human foot-soldier.
यो न शक्यः सुरैर्हन्तुं न यक्षैर्नासुरैस्तथा। सोऽयं कश्चिदिवासत्त्वो मृत्युं मर्त्येन लम्भितः
He whom gods, yakṣas, and asuras could not slay—he, as if by fate, has met death at the hands of a mortal.
एवं वदन्त्यो रुरुदुस्तस्य ता दुःखिताः स्त्रियः। भूय एव च दुःखार्ता विलेपुश्च पुनः पुनः
Thus speaking, those sorrowful women wept for him, and, overwhelmed by grief, lamented again and again.
अशृण्वता तु सुहृदां सततं हितवादिनाम्। मरणायाहृता सीता राक्षसाश्च निपातिताः। एताः सममिदानीं ते वयमात्मा च पातितः
Because he did not listen to the constant good counsel of friends, Sita was brought here for his death, the rākṣasas have been destroyed, and now we, and he himself, have been brought down.
ब्रुवाणोऽपि हितं वाक्यमिष्टो भ्राता विभीषणः। दृष्टं परुषितो मोहात् त्वयाऽऽत्मवधकांक्षिणा
Even though his dear brother Vibhishana spoke words of good advice, out of delusion you saw him as harsh, desiring your own destruction.
यदि निर्यातिता ते स्यात् सीता रामाय मैथिली। न नः स्याद् व्यसनं घोरमिदं मूलहरं महत्
If Sita, the daughter of Janaka, had been returned to Rama, this terrible, root-destroying calamity would not have befallen us.
वृत्तकामो भवेद् भ्राता रामो मित्रकुलं भवेत्। वयं चाविधवाः सर्वाः सकामा न च शत्रवः
Your brother would have been satisfied, Rama would have become an ally, we all would not be widows, our desires fulfilled, and there would be no enemies.
त्वया पुनर्नृशंसेन सीतां संरुन्धता बलात्। राक्षसा वयमात्मा च त्रयं तुल्यं निपातितम्
But by you, cruelly detaining Sita by force, the rākṣasas, we, and you yourself—three have been equally destroyed.
न कामकारः कामं वा तव राक्षसपुंगव। दैवं चेष्टयते सर्वं हतं दैवेन हन्यते
Neither desire nor the fulfillment of desire is yours, O foremost of rākṣasas; fate directs all actions—what is destroyed is destroyed by fate.
वानराणां विनाशोऽयं राक्षसानां च ते रणे। तव चैव महाबाहो दैवयोगादुपागतः
This destruction of the vānaras and rākṣasas in battle, and even yours, O mighty-armed one, has come about through the workings of destiny.
नैवार्थेन च कामेन विक्रमेण न चाज्ञया। शक्या दैवगतिर्लोके निवर्तयितुमुद्यता
Neither by wealth, nor desire, nor valor, nor command can the course of fate, once set in motion in this world, be turned back.
विलेपुरेवं दीनास्ता राक्षसाधिपयोषितः। कुरर्य इव दुःखार्ता बाष्पपर्याकुलेक्षणाः
Thus, those wives of the rākṣasa lord, afflicted and sorrowful, wept, their eyes clouded with tears, like distressed she-owls.

Then, as those rākṣasa women lamented, the eldest and beloved wife, stricken with grief, gazed upon her husband.
दशग्रीवं हतं दृष्ट्वा रामेणाचिन्त्यकर्मणा। पतिं मन्दोदरी तत्र कृपणा पर्यदेवयत्
Seeing Daśagrīva slain by Rāma, whose deeds are unimaginable, Mandodarī, wretched, mourned her husband there.
ननु नाम महाबाहो तव वैश्रवणानुज। क्रुद्धस्य प्रमुखे स्थातुं त्रस्यत्यपि पुरंदरः
Surely, O mighty-armed one, even Indra himself trembles to stand before you in anger, you who are the brother of Vaiśravaṇa.
ऋषयश्च महान्तोऽपि गन्धर्वाश्च यशस्विनः। ननु नाम तवोद्वेगाच्चारणाश्च दिशो गताः
Indeed, because of your wrath, even great sages and renowned gandharvas, and the celestial bards, have fled in all directions.
