What remains now in this world for one whose spirit has departed, as the tiger among rākṣasas lies as if asleep in the dust of battle?
With firmness as its shoots, great austerity as its flowers, and valor as its deep roots, the great tree of the rākṣasa king has been felled in battle by the wind of Rāghava.
With horns of brilliance, lineage upon lineage, hands and arms that brought both wrath and favor, his body grasped by the lion of the Ikṣvāku line, the elephant Rāvaṇa now sleeps upon the earth.
His valor blazing forth with the fire of prowess and enthusiasm, his breath like smoke, his own might his pride—this rākṣasa fire, so powerful in battle, has been extinguished by the raincloud of Rāma.
With the mane of a lion, the hump of a bull, the horns of a rhinoceros, the gait of a victorious elephant, the rākṣasa bull, with restless ears and eyes, has been struck down by the tiger among kings.
Rāma, seeing Vibhīṣaṇa speaking words grounded in reason and certainty of observed facts, addressed him, who was overwhelmed by grief.
This one is not destroyed, nor motionless; fierce in battle, with exceedingly lofty enthusiasm, he has fallen without fear.
Those established in the warrior's duty, who fall on the battlefield hoping for glory, do not grieve thus when slain.
By whom, with Indra and the gods, the three worlds were terrified in battle, that wise one—when joined with time—this is not the time to mourn for him.
Absolute victory in battle has never occurred; a hero is either slain by others or slays others in combat.
This is the path prescribed by the ancients, honored by warriors: it is certain that a warrior slain in battle is not to be mourned.
Therefore, seeing this as certain, holding to truth and free from sorrow, consider what action must now be taken hereafter.
Vibhīṣaṇa, afflicted by grief, spoke to the valiant prince, having uttered these words, immediately for the benefit of his brother.
He who was never previously defeated in clashes, even by all the gods and Indra, has been broken upon encountering you in battle, just as the ocean is checked upon reaching its shore.
By him, gifts were given to forest-dwellers, pleasures enjoyed, servants cared for; wealth was entrusted to friends, enmities endured with foes.
He was both a fire to enemies and possessed great austerity, versed in the Vedas, and foremost in deeds and valor; whatever rites are due for one who has departed, I wish to perform them with your favor.
The great-souled prince, addressed by Vibhīṣaṇa with compassionate words, instructed the performance of heavenly rites, his spirit undiminished.
Hostilities end with death; our purpose is fulfilled. Let his funeral rites be performed; let mine be as yours.

Hear now the one hundred and tenth chapter in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Book of War.
Hearing that Rāvaṇa was slain by the noble Rāghava, the demon women, emaciated by grief, came out from the inner chambers.
Though repeatedly restrained, they rolled upon the earth's dust, their hair disheveled, afflicted by sorrow, like cows bereft of their calves.
Exiting by the northern gate with the demons, they entered the dreadful battlefield, searching for their slain husband.
Crying 'O noble prince!' and 'Alas, our protector!' everywhere, they fell upon the blood-soaked, mud-stained earth, embracing his corpse.
Their eyes filled with tears, overcome by grief for their husband, they wailed like she-elephants whose leader has been slain.
They saw Ravana, of immense body, great valor, and radiant splendor, lying slain on the ground, resembling a heap of dark collyrium.
Suddenly seeing their husband lying in the dust of battle, they fell upon his limbs like severed forest creepers.
Out of deep affection, one embraced him and wept; another clung to his feet, and another held fast to his neck.
One, raising her arms, rolled upon the ground; seeing his lifeless face, another fell into a swoon.
One placed his head on her lap, gazing at his face and weeping, bathing it with tears like dewdrops upon a lotus.
Thus, tormented, seeing Ravana slain upon the earth, they cried out in many ways from grief and lamented all the more.
