तमोघ्नाय हिमघ्नाय शत्रुघ्नायामितात्मने। कृतघ्नघ्नाय देवाय ज्योतिषां पतये नमः
Salutations to the destroyer of darkness, the destroyer of cold, the destroyer of enemies, the immeasurable soul, the destroyer of the ungrateful, the god, the lord of lights.
तप्तचामीकराभाय हरये विश्वकर्मणे। नमस्तमोऽभिनिघ्नाय रुचये लोकसाक्षिणे
Salutations to the one shining like molten gold, to Hari, to the maker of the universe; salutations to the destroyer of darkness, to the radiant one, the witness of the world.
नाशयत्येष वै भूतं तमेव सृजति प्रभुः। पायत्येष तपत्येष वर्षत्येष गभस्तिभिः
This lord destroys beings and creates them again; he protects, burns, and rains with his rays.
एष सुप्तेषु जागर्ति भूतेषु परिनिष्ठितः। एष चैवाग्निहोत्रं च फलं चैवाग्निहोत्रिणाम्
He remains awake among those who sleep, established among all beings; he is both the Agnihotra and its fruit for those who perform it.
देवाश्च क्रतवश्चैव क्रतूनां फलमेव च। यानि कृत्यानि लोकेषु सर्वेषु परमप्रभुः
He is the gods, the sacrifices, and the fruit of sacrifices; he is the supreme lord of all actions in every world.
एनमापत्सु कृच्छ्रेषु कान्तारेषु भयेषु च। कीर्तयन् पुरुषः कश्चिन्नावसीदति राघव
Whoever, O Rāghava, recalls him in calamities, hardships, wilderness, and fears, does not sink.
पूजयस्वैनमेकाग्रो देवदेवं जगत्पतिम्। एतत् त्रिगुणितं जप्त्वा युद्धेषु विजयिष्यति
With single-mindedness, worship him—the god of gods, the lord of the world; by reciting this three times, one will be victorious in battles.
अस्मिन् क्षणे महाबाहो रावणं त्वं जहिष्यसि। एवमुक्त्वा ततोऽगस्त्यो जगाम स यथागतम्
At this moment, O mighty-armed, you will slay Rāvaṇa; having spoken thus, Agastya departed as he had come.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा महातेजा नष्टशोकोऽभवत् तदा। धारयामास सुप्रीतो राघवः प्रयतात्मवान्
Hearing this, the great-souled one was freed from sorrow; Rāghava, pleased and self-controlled, retained it.
आदित्यं प्रेक्ष्य जप्त्वेदं परं हर्षमवाप्तवान्। त्रिराचम्य शुचिर्भूत्वा धनुरादाय वीर्यवान्
Gazing at the sun and reciting this, he attained supreme joy; having purified himself by three ablutions, the mighty one took up his bow.
रावणं प्रेक्ष्य हृष्टात्मा जयार्थं समुपागमत्। सर्वयत्नेन महता वृतस्तस्य वधेऽभवत्
Seeing Rāvaṇa, his heart rejoiced and he approached for victory; surrounded with all great effort, he became intent on his destruction.
अथ रविरवदन्निरीक्ष्य रामं मुदितमनाः परमं प्रहृष्यमाणः। निशिचरपतिसंक्षयं विदित्वा सुरगणमध्यगतो वचस्त्वरेति
Then the sun, seeing Rāma, spoke joyfully, with supreme delight; knowing the destruction of the lord of the night-walkers, he, among the hosts of gods, uttered words swiftly.

सारथिः स रथं हृष्टः परसैन्यप्रधर्षणम्। गन्धर्वनगराकारं समुच्छ्रितपताकिनम्
The charioteer, delighted, drove the chariot that terrified the enemy army, resembling a city of the Gandharvas, with raised banners.
युक्तं परमसम्पन्नैर्वाजिभिर्हेममालिभिः। युद्धोपकरणैः पूर्णं पताकाध्वजमालिनम्
It was yoked with the finest horses adorned with golden garlands, filled with implements of war, and draped with banners and flags.
ग्रसन्तमिव चाकाशं नादयन्तं वसुंधराम्। प्रणाशं परसैन्यानां स्वसैन्यस्य प्रहर्षणम्
It seemed to devour the sky, resounded across the earth, bringing destruction to the enemy armies and delight to its own.
रावणस्य रथं क्षिप्रं चोदयामास सारथिः। तमापतन्तं सहसा स्वनवन्तं महाध्वजम्
The charioteer quickly urged on Rāvaṇa’s chariot, which rushed forth suddenly, resounding, with a great banner.
रथं राक्षसराजस्य नरराजो ददर्श ह। कृष्णवाजिसमायुक्तं युक्तं रौद्रेण वर्चसा
The king of men saw the chariot of the king of the rākṣasas, yoked with black horses and endowed with fierce brilliance.
दीप्यमानमिवाकाशे विमानं सूर्यवर्चसम्। तडित्पताकागहनं दर्शितेन्द्रायुधप्रभम्
It shone in the sky like a celestial vehicle with the radiance of the sun, its banners like lightning, displaying the splendor of Indra’s weapon.
शरधारा विमुञ्चन्तं धाराधरमिवाम्बुदम्। स दृष्ट्वा मेघसंकाशमापतन्तं रथं रिपोः
It released streams of arrows like a cloud pouring rain; seeing the enemy’s chariot, dark as a cloud, rushing forward,
गिरेर्वज्राभिमृष्टस्य दीर्यतः सदृशस्वनम्। विस्फारयन् वै वेगेन बालचन्द्रानतं धनुः
Its sound was like that of a mountain struck by thunderbolt and breaking apart; he drew his bow, curved like a young moon, with force.
उवाच मातलिं रामः सहस्राक्षस्य सारथिम्। मातले पश्य संरब्धमापतन्तं रथं रिपोः
Rāma spoke to Mātaḷi, the charioteer of the thousand-eyed one: 'Mātaḷi, look at the enemy's chariot, rushing forward in fury.'
यथापसव्यं पतता वेगेन महता पुनः। समरे हन्तुमात्मानं तथानेन कृता मतिः
As it flies past to the left, again with great speed, its intent in battle is to destroy itself.
तदप्रमादमातिष्ठ प्रत्युद्गच्छ रथं रिपोः। विध्वंसयितुमिच्छामि वायुर्मेघमिवोत्थितम्
Therefore, maintain vigilance; confront the enemy's chariot. I wish to shatter it, like the wind disperses a rising cloud.
अविक्लवमसम्भ्रान्तमव्यग्रहृदयेक्षणम्। रश्मिसंचारनियतं प्रचोदय रथं द्रुतम्
Drive the chariot swiftly, unwavering, unshaken, with steady heart and gaze, keeping the reins controlled.
कामं न त्वं समाधेयः पुरंदररथोचितः। युयुत्सुरहमेकाग्रः स्मारये त्वां न शिक्षये
Indeed, you need no instruction, accustomed as you are to Indra's chariot; I, intent on battle, remind you, not teach you.
परितुष्टः स रामस्य तेन वाक्येन मातलिः। प्रचोदयामास रथं सुरसारथिरुत्तमः
Mātaḷi, the excellent charioteer of the gods, was pleased by Rāma's words and urged the chariot onward.
अपसव्यं ततः कुर्वन् रावणस्य महारथम्। चक्रसम्भूतरजसा रावणं व्यवधूनयत्
Then, turning to the left of Rāvaṇa's great chariot, he scattered Rāvaṇa with dust raised by the wheels.
ततः क्रुद्धो दशग्रीवस्ताम्रविस्फारितेक्षणः। रथप्रतिमुखं रामं सायकैरवधूनयत्
Then, the ten-headed one, enraged, his eyes blazing red, showered arrows upon Rāma, facing his chariot.
धर्षणामर्षितो रामो धैर्यं रोषेण लम्भयन्। जग्राह सुमहावेगमैन्द्रं युधि शरासनम्
Insulted, Rāma, restraining his anger with courage, seized the mighty Indra's bow in battle.
