देशकालौ च विज्ञेयौ लक्षणानीङ्गितानि च। दैन्यं हर्षश्च खेदश्च रथिनश्च बलाबलम्
One must discern the place and time, the signs and gestures, the dejection, joy, and fatigue, as well as the strength and weakness of the charioteer.
स्थलनिम्नानि भूमेश्च समानि विषमाणि च। युद्धकालश्च विज्ञेयः परस्यान्तरदर्शनम्
The elevations and depressions of the ground, its level and uneven places, the timing of battle, and the observation of the enemy’s intentions must be understood.
उपयानापयाने च स्थानं प्रत्यपसर्पणम्। सर्वमेतद् रथस्थेन ज्ञेयं रथकुटुम्बिना
Approach and withdrawal, position and retreat—all these must be known by the charioteer who is responsible for the chariot.
तव विश्रामहेतोस्तु तथैषां रथवाजिनाम्। रौद्रं वर्जयता खेदं क्षमं कृतमिदं मया
For your rest, and for that of these chariot horses, I have avoided harsh fatigue; this was done by me as appropriate.
स्वेच्छया न मया वीर रथोऽयमपवाहितः। भर्तुः स्नेहपरीतेन मयेदं यत् कृतं प्रभो
O hero, this chariot was not withdrawn by me of my own will; what I have done, O lord, was out of affection for my master.
आज्ञापय यथातत्त्वं वक्ष्यस्यरिनिषूदन। तत् करिष्याम्यहं वीर गतानृण्येन चेतसा
Command me as you see fit, O slayer of enemies; I will carry it out, O hero, with a mind free from obligation.
संतुष्टस्तेन वाक्येन रावणस्तस्य सारथेः। प्रशस्यैनं बहुविधं युद्धलुब्धोऽब्रवीदिदम्
Rāvaṇa, pleased by the charioteer's words, praised him in many ways and, eager for battle, spoke thus.
रथं शीघ्रमिमं सूत राघवाभिमुखं नय। नाहत्वा समरे शत्रून् निवर्तिष्यति रावणः
O charioteer, quickly drive this chariot toward Rāghava; Rāvaṇa will not return without defeating his enemies in battle.
एवमुक्त्वा रथस्थस्य रावणो राक्षसेश्वरः। ददौ तस्य शुभं ह्येकं हस्ताभरणमुत्तमम्। श्रुत्वा रावणवाक्यानि सारथिः संन्यवर्तत
Having spoken thus, Rāvaṇa, lord of the rākṣasas, gave his charioteer a single excellent hand ornament; hearing Rāvaṇa’s words, the charioteer turned the chariot.
ततो द्रुतं रावणवाक्यचोदितः प्रचोदयामास हयान् स सारथिः। स राक्षसेन्द्रस्य ततो महारथः क्षणेन रामस्य रणाग्रतोऽभवत्
Then, urged by Rāvaṇa’s command, the charioteer swiftly drove the horses; thus, the great chariot of the king of rākṣasas stood before Rāma in the forefront of battle within a moment.

ततो युद्धपरिश्रान्तं समरे चिन्तया स्थितम्। रावणं चाग्रतो दृष्ट्वा युद्धाय समुपस्थितम्
Then, seeing Rāvaṇa, exhausted from battle and standing in thought, present before him, ready for combat—
दैवतैश्च समागम्य द्रष्टुमभ्यागतो रणम्। उपगम्याब्रवीद् राममगस्त्यो भगवांस्तदा
The gods assembled, having come to witness the battle; at that moment, the revered Agastya approached Rāma and spoke.
राम राम महाबाहो शृणु गुह्यं सनातनम्। येन सर्वानरीन् वत्स समरे विजयिष्यसे
Rāma, Rāma, mighty-armed, listen to this ancient secret; by which, dear one, you will conquer all enemies in battle.
आदित्यहृदयं पुण्यं सर्वशत्रुविनाशनम्। जयावहं जपं नित्यमक्षयं परमं शिवम्
The Āditya Hṛdaya is sacred, the destroyer of all enemies, the bringer of victory; recite it always, for it is inexhaustible and supremely auspicious.
सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्यं सर्वपापप्रणाशनम्। चिन्ताशोकप्रशमनमायुर्वर्धनमुत्तमम्
He is the most auspicious among all that is auspicious, the destroyer of all sins, the remover of anxiety and sorrow, and the supreme increaser of life.
रश्मिमन्तं समुद्यन्तं देवासुरनमस्कृतम्। पूजयस्व विवस्वन्तं भास्करं भुवनेश्वरम्
Worship the radiant, rising Sun, honored by gods and asuras, the shining Vivsavat, the lord of the world.
सर्वदेवात्मको ह्येष तेजस्वी रश्मिभावनः। एष देवासुरगणाँल्लोकान् पाति गभस्तिभिः
He is the soul of all the gods, brilliant, the source of rays; with his beams, he protects the worlds and the hosts of gods and asuras.
एष ब्रह्मा च विष्णुश्च शिवः स्कन्दः प्रजापतिः। महेन्द्रो धनदः कालो यमः सोमो ह्यपां पतिः
He is Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva, Skanda, Prajāpati, Mahendra, Kubera, Time, Yama, Soma, and the lord of waters.
पितरो वसवः साध्या अश्विनौ मरुतो मनुः। वायुर्वह्निः प्रजाः प्राण ऋतुकर्ता प्रभाकरः
He is the ancestors, the Vasus, the Sādhyas, the Aśvins, the Maruts, Manu, Vāyu, Agni, all beings, life, the maker of seasons, and the bringer of light.
आदित्यः सविता सूर्यः खगः पूषा गभस्तिमान्। सुवर्णसदृशो भानुर्हिरण्यरेता दिवाकरः
He is Āditya, Savitā, Sūrya, the sky-traveler, Pūṣā, the radiant one, the shining Bhānu, golden-hued, the seed of gold, and the maker of day.
हरिदश्वः सहस्रार्चिः सप्तसप्तिर्मरीचिमान्। तिमिरोन्मथनः शम्भुस्त्वष्टा मार्तण्डकोंऽशुमान्
He has green horses, a thousand rays, seven chariots, is full of beams, the dispeller of darkness, auspicious, the shaper, Mārtaṇḍa, and the radiant one.
हिरण्यगर्भः शिशिरस्तपनोऽहस्करो रविः। अग्निगर्भोऽदितेः पुत्रः शङ्खः शिशिरनाशनः
He is Hiraṇyagarbha, the cool one, the burning one, the remover of darkness, Ravi, fire-born, son of Aditi, the conch, and the destroyer of cold.
व्योमनाथस्तमोभेदी ऋग्यजुःसामपारगः। घनवृष्टिरपां मित्रो विन्ध्यवीथीप्लवंगमः
He is the lord of the sky, the dispeller of darkness, the knower of Ṛg, Yajur, and Sāma Vedas, the bringer of rain, friend of waters, and the one who traverses the Vindhya path.
आतपी मण्डली मृत्युः पिङ्गलः सर्वतापनः। कविर्विश्वो महातेजा रक्तः सर्वभवोद्भवः
He is the heat-giver, circular, death, tawny, the burner of all, the sage, the universe, of great brilliance, red, and the origin of all beings.
नक्षत्रग्रहताराणामधिपो विश्वभावनः। तेजसामपि तेजस्वी द्वादशात्मन् नमोऽस्तु ते
He is the lord of stars, planets, and constellations, the creator of the universe, the most radiant among the radiant, the twelve-formed one—salutations to you.
नमः पूर्वाय गिरये पश्चिमायाद्रये नमः। ज्योतिर्गणानां पतये दिनाधिपतये नमः
Salutations to the eastern mountain, to the western mountain, to the lord of the hosts of lights, to the lord of the day.
जयाय जयभद्राय हर्यश्वाय नमो नमः। नमो नमः सहस्रांशो आदित्याय नमो नमः
Salutations to the victorious, the auspicious victor, the one with tawny horses; repeated salutations to the thousand-rayed, to Āditya.
नम उग्राय वीराय सारङ्गाय नमो नमः। नमः पद्मप्रबोधाय प्रचण्डाय नमोऽस्तु ते
Salutations to the fierce, the heroic, the one with spotted steeds; salutations to the awakener of the lotus, to the intense one—salutations to you.
ब्रह्मेशानाच्युतेशाय सूरायादित्यवर्चसे। भास्वते सर्वभक्षाय रौद्राय वपुषे नमः
Salutations to the lord of Brahmā, Īśāna, and Acyuta, to the shining one, to the one with the radiance of the sun, to the brilliant, the all-devouring, the terrible in form.
